It's A Long December, Month Ends With One Win

December 31, 2007 - By

The Amerks were shutout by the Syracuse Crunch by the final score of 4-0, the second game in as many nights they failed to score any goals.  The Amerks were held to just 19 shots while allowing 32 for the Crunch.  Things aren’t going to get any easier as they head to Toronto to play the first place Marlies on Wednesday night.

The Amerks were unable to produce any real scoring potentials and went 0 for 5 on the power play.

Crunch forward Philippe Dupuis gave the Crunch a 1-0 lead at 5:01 of the first.

Adam Pineault scored his seventh of the year to make it 2-0 at 4:35 of the second.

Tom Sestito tacked on Syracuse’s third goal of the night at 10:12 of the third. Sestito scored again at 12:40 of the third.

The game seemed to have been played by the Amerks in slow motion as the Crunch had no problems skating around our defense as well as putting the puck on net.

David Shantz saved 28 shots and fell to 1-10-1 on the year, but like many of his other losses it can’t be put solely on his shoulders.  There was a lack of [...]Read More

Weekend Update, One Win and One Loss

December 30, 2007 - By

The Amerks scored a big win at home on Friday by the final score of 4-1 against the Hamilton Bulldogs and then shutout in Cleveland by the Lake Erie Monsters 3-0 on Saturday.

Tonight at Blue Cross Arena the Syracuse Crunch come in to town to end the weekend.  This season the Amerks are 2-2 against the Crunch, the last two games we saw the Amerks lose 4-0 and 9-2.

The win on Friday night was a big win as it ended a 10 game losing streak which put them in the record books in a tie with the ’81 and ’88 teams.  A win like that probably shouldn’t be considered a big win, but for this season it was.  Marek Zagrapan had two goals and an assist, Marco-Andre Gragnani and Pete Aston also scored goals.  The team played a full 60 minutes of hockey, didn’t allow any short handed goals, killed eight penalties, and had a solid performance in net by Tyler Plante.

On Saturday the Amerks out shot the Lake Erie Monsters 36-26 but they were unable to put any pucks past goaltender Tyler Weiman.  Here is a great write up of the game on [...]Read More

It's Like A Game 7, Tonight's A Must Win

December 28, 2007 - By

Long time Amerks fans have begun calling this current team one of the worst ever in the team’s 52 year history, it all comes down to tonights game.  A great incentive to want to go to tonights game against rival the Hamilton Bulldogs isn’t it?

A loss tonight would put the team in the record books for longest losing streak in team history, also a win by the Norfolk Admirals would give the Amerks sole ownership of last place in the league in points.

A win won’t stop comparions to one of the worst teams ever, but it could give the team and fans the hope of things starting to turn in the right direction.

The defending Calder Cup Champion Hamilton Bulldogs aren’t that much better of a team this season with only 10 wins themselves, but the Amerks have played 5 more games than them.  The Amerks this season are 3-0-1 against the Bulldogs so at least we know it’s a team they can and have beaten.

The keys to a win are pretty simple, and what would seem like common sense:

  • Play a consistent 60 minutes of hockey.  If the team can get an early lead they need to play the rest of [...]Read More

Thursday Morning Practice, Score Some Goals!

December 27, 2007 - By

After losing to the Toronto Marlies on Wednesday night the team was back on the ice at 11am practicing for Fridays game against the Hamilton Bulldogs.  The focus of the practice seemed to be a simple one, scoring some goals.  During this current ten game losing streak the team has been outscored 40-19, four of those games were decided by one goal.  A few more were decided by two goals with an empty net goal scored by the opposing team (making it a basic one goal game).

So far this season the team is leading the league with 122 goals against while sitting around the middle having scored 84 goals.

A lot of time was spent heading to the front of the net to try and get rebounds, deflect shots in, and screen the goalies, something that needs to be done more of during games.

While the players continuously practiced 2 on 1 breaks, goaltenders Tyler Plante and David Shantz were working hard trying to prove who should get the start on Friday.  While Tyler Plante is the fresh face with the team, he hasn’t yet proved that he should be the one to stick around once Adam Dennis returns.

Amerks Tie Team Record For Losing Streak

December 27, 2007 - By

The Amerks 2-1 loss to the Toronto Marlies on Wednesday night tied a team record with the ’81 and ’88 teams for a ten game losing streak.  The loss also puts the team in a three way tie for last place in the league.  The team has a must win game against the Bulldogs to avoid being sole owners for longest losing streak by an Amerks team in 52 years.

As for the game itself, David Brine scored the first goal of the game with 3:05 left in the first period getting his own rebound and scoring on Marlies goaltender Justin Pogge.

The lead didn’t last for long as the Marlies tied the game a minute and 55 seconds later when John Mitchell scored on a one timer past Tyler Plante.

As quickly as the second period started the Marlies scored the game winning goal when Kris Newbury scored his 11th of the season.

The Amerks had nearly 39 minutes to tie the game but failed to do so even with eight power play opportunities and out shooting the Marlies 23-20.

The game also featured a total of 52 penalty minutes, a decent fight between Pat Kaleta and Colin Murphy, [...]Read More
