A Night Out With The Amerks

November 30, 2007 - By

Monday night was the Rochester American’s Booster Club’s annual Meet the Players Dinner.  It was a great chance for fans to get to know their home team and have a nice night out.

The dinner took place at the Lodge on the Green Party House and was set up nicely with a cocktail hour, dinner, meet and greet and dancing with the players.  The dollar dance was used to raise money for the Booster Club’s Christmas Family.

During the dinner every table had one or two players sitting with the fans, chatting it up.  It was nice to get to know a player better.  I had the pleasure of sitting with Mark Mancari and his girlfriend.  It was great to be able to ask him what his favorite hockey team was growing up (even if it broke my heart when he said the Toronto Maple Leafs) and see how he likes Rochester (he is a big fan of Wegmans).

After dinner, everyone received a nice team picture taken at a practice this year.  There was a meet and greet where all the players signed the team picture and talked with everyone at the dinner some more.

The Booster Club raised a good amount [...]Read More

On The Road to Manchester and Providence

November 30, 2007 - By

After a week of off ice headlines, the Amerks return to the ice to play some hockey this weekend on the road versus the Manchester Monarchs and Providence Bruins.  This will be the first of two meetings this season between the Amerks and Monarchs, and second of two between the Amerks and Bruins.

After being out for a number of games each with injuries, Kenndal McArdle, Mike Funk, and Drew Larman are all expected back in action this weekend.

The return of Kenndal McArdle should add some extra speed and scoring to our offense.  Since the start of the season McArdle was expected to make some big contributions in his first AHL season, in 6 games played he was able to tally a goal and 2 assists.

Tonights game should be a competitive contest between the Amerks and Monarchs who are both struggling to play above .500 hockey this season.  This will be only the third time these two teams have played.

On Saturday the Amerks will play against the Providence Bruins who are in first place in the Atlantic Division.  The last game these two played was on October 13 when the Amerks lost 4-3, but were outshot 44-13 which tells a bigger picture of the game [...]Read More

Tanner Glass in Charlotte for Reading Power Play

November 28, 2007 - By

Tanner Glass and The Moose will be at the Charlotte Library branch at 7pm tonight Wednesday November 28, 2007 as part of the Amerks ‘Reading Power Play.’  This is the last appearance of the first half of the Reading Power Play, the second half will be announced soon for December.

This year, the Amerks have again joined with Monroe County Libraries to assist local public librarians in support of reading and education. The reading campaign, which will run from November to February, will consist of weekly appearances from the Amerks players and The Moose to several libraries in and around the Monroe County area. The visiting player will read to the youth and give a hockey demonstration. Each appearance will also feature a raffle for Amerk memorabilia and an autograph session by the visiting player and The Moose.

The second half of the Reading Power Play, slated from December to February, is a reading program that uses the successful incentive formula employed in summer reading programs. Using the hat trick as a thematic vehicle, youth participants fill out a form for every three books they read, which qualifies them for an entry in the grand prize drawing. The Grand Prize [...]Read More

Golisano Doubts The 29-year Marriage Can Be Saved

November 28, 2007 - By

“I think it may be too late,” Golisano said on Tuesday afternoon, following his speech to the Rochester branch of the American Marketing Association at the Riverside Convention Center.

A lot can be said regarding the relationship the Rochester Americans and Buffalo Sabres have had in recent years, but we also wonder a lot about what is going on with the current financial situation of the Rochester Americans.

The Buffalo Sabres have shown interest in buying the Amerks and then signing a contract with the city of Rochester to manage Blue Cross Arena, yet Steve Donner has not shown interest in selling the team.  Steve Donner has reported though that he has two potential investors that are interested in purchasing a stake in the Amerks.

A number of questions have been raised that we are yet to have any answers for.

If the Sabres doubt the 29-year marriage between the two teams can be saved, who would the Sabres obtain an affiliation with?

The Florida Panthers have reportedly been looking into establishing an affiliation elsewhere, but with the Sabres out of the picture would the Panthers remain solely with the Amerks?

If neither the Sabres nor Panthers are interested in staying [...]Read More

Amerks Beat Monsters 3-2

November 24, 2007 - By

Last night the Rochester Americans held on to beat the Lake Erie Monsters 3-2.  This was the first time the Amerks ever played the new affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche.

Within the first 20 seconds of the game, the Americans lost a defenseman for the game.  Mike Card took a hard check on the boards and may have sustained a concussion.  He had a hard time getting off the ice himself but seemed ok after the game.

The Amerks got on the board first when Anthony Stewart put one away at 9:00.  The goal was assisted by Mancari (15) and Weber (6).  The Amerks were then on the penalty kill for four minutes.  Patrick Kaleta took two consecutive penalties (Holding at 13:55 and Goaltender Interference at 16:17).  The Amerks were able to hold off the Monsters and left the period with a 1-0 lead.

Coming into the second period, the Americans were not going to allow the same mistakes to happen two nights in a row.  When Codey Burki of the Monsters went to the penalty box for interference at 1:50, the Amerks took advantage.  Dylan Hunter netted his 7th goal of the season at 3:16.  The goal was assisted by [...]Read More

Amerks Lose Second Straight To Binghamton 4-1

November 22, 2007 - By

The Rochester Americans came out strong tonight in the first period.  Dan Collins scored his third goal of the season only 1:23 into the game.  His goal was assisted by Anthony Stewart and Rob Globke (both their 7th for the season).

The Amerks couldn’t hold the lead after that period though.  Niko Dimitrakos of the Senators scored 1:43 into the second period to tie it up and then Mapletoft scored shorthanded at 4:06 to take the lead.  The Amerks never put the puck in the net again.

At 12:48 in the second Denis Hamel scored.  The period ended with a score of 3-1.

Coming into the third, the Amerks were once again outshot substantially.  Denis Hamel of the Senators put one more away at 8:03 to make the final score 4-1.  His goals were his 9th and 10th of the season.

David Shantz stopped 32 of 36 shots on goal.  The Amerks were outshot 36 to 20 once again tonight.  The Amerks have been outshot most of this season and really need to pick up on the offense if they want to win more games.

Tomorrow, the team travels back home for their first game ever against the Lake Erie Monsters.  This new [...]Read More

3-5 Loss To The Moose

November 22, 2007 - By

The Rochester Americans couldn’t keep it together tonight in a 5-3 loss to the Manitoba Moose.  This is the 8th loss in a row against the Moose stretching back to the 2006-07 season.

Manitoba scored twice in the first period.  The Amerks did score a goal in the first but, with luck on MacIntyre’s side, he scooped it out of the net before the ref could see it.  The Amerks only had four shots in the first period.

Coming into the second period, the Amerks still couldn’t pick it up immediately.  Only 1:42 into the period, Manitoba scored a short handed goal on the Amerks.  5:34 in, the Americans scored their “first” goal of the night.  The Amerks left the second period down 4-1.

In the third period, both Globke and Meyer scored.  This was Globke’s 4th goal of the season and Meyer’s 7th goal of the season.  Manitoba scored one more in the third to make the final score 5-3.

Mark Mancari wrapped up his 14th assist of the season tonight.

Adam Dennis saved 32 out of 37 shots tonight against the Moose.  The Amerks need to start to keep the shots down if they want to win [...]Read More
