Panthers vs Sabres: More Than I Bargained For

February 11, 2008 - By

At the beginning of the season, I had originally bought tickets to last night’s Panthers’ game because I thought it would be fun to see an “Amerks vs. Amerks” game.  As it turns out, I got a lot more than I had bargained for.

With 9:56 left in the third period, Clarke MacArthur checked Olli Jokinen into the corner.  His leg came up hitting Richard Zednik in the neck with his skate.  Zednik immediately fell to the ice holding his neck with a huge splatter of blood following him down.

Somehow he had enough in him to get to the bench where a doctor and teammate Jassen Cullimore got him to the locker room where Dr Leslie Bisson was able to stop the bleeding to get him transported to a local Buffalo hospital.

Zednik had surgery there and is now in stable condition.

The Panthers’ bench was despondent.  Teammates had tears in theirs eyes as they waited to find out what was going to be the outcome of the incident.  The last 9:56 of the game were a waste.  Both teams were just going through the motions.

Although the Sabres’ scored again…it didn’t matter, the game was over at [...]Read More

Stop The Presses, It's a Winning Streak!

February 10, 2008 - By

Marc-Andre Gragnani scored the lone Amerk goal, and Adam Dennis recorded his third shootout of the season as the Amerks beat the Grand Rapid Griffins 1-0.

The Amerks have won three of the last four games, and recorded points in five of the last seven games.  The last time they had any sort of streak like this was in November when they had points in 8 of 11 games.

We weren’t able to be at the game tonight or listen, so check out Amerks.com and the D&C for recaps.

We Messed With Texas; Shootout Win Over Rampage

February 10, 2008 - By

The Amerks showed up with a solid effort on Saturday afternoon and beat the San Antonio Rampage 3-2 in a shootout, it was only the fourth win in the previous 30 games and only second win at home since November.

Rob Globke was the #1 star of the game with two goals in regulation and one in the shootout to help lead the Amerks to victory.

The Rampage took the early lead with a goal 6:30 into the game and seemed to control the game throughout the first period but the Amerks battled back, which seems like an odd thing to write.

There was no scoring in the second period, but the Amerks outshot the Rampage by a margin of 15-2 and didn’t back down like they’ve been known to in the second period.  Mark Mancari also appeared to step up to remarks by Cunneyworth that the players needed to stand up for each other.  He got in the middle of a scrum behind the Rampage net and threw a few punches, a roughing penalty worth taking.

It sure did take a lot of courage for Logan Stephenson of the Rampage to push, shove, and try to throw punches all while he was [...]Read More

Mike Funk Practice Video

February 9, 2008 - By

Here’s the video as promised of Mike Funk at practice on Friday morning.  The video speaks for itself, not sure what else to write.  Here’s the story about it.

One Returns…Another Injured

February 8, 2008 - By

Mike Funk is expected to return to the lineup for tomorrow’s game against the San Antonio Rampage.  Kenndal McArdle is going to be out for a month with a broken foot.

Anthony Stewart Returned to Rochester

February 8, 2008 - By

Anthony Stewart did his favorite thing today…ride on an airplane.  He has been returned to Rochester once again.  He now has enough frequent flyer miles for that trip around the world he has been planning.

Amerks Morning Practice

February 8, 2008 - By

The Amerks finished morning practice today with a game of what I guess could be called, strip shootout.  Before each player could leave the ice they had to score a on a shootout against Adam Dennis.  Each time the player missed they had to take off a piece of gear.  The last player to score was Mike Funk (who returned after nursing a shoulder injury), he was basically down to his jock strap (video will be uploaded later).

Franklin MacDonald, Mike Weber, and Dylan Hunter rounded out the last four players to score on Adam Dennis.

It doesn’t seem like defenseman Henrik Tallinder of the Sabres has to worry any time soon about Mike Funk being called up to take his recent promotion to the shootout.

Mark Mancari on having a fun practice, “we’ve tried serious and look where it got us.”

Unless the Sabres or Panthers make some big deals before the trade deadlines, we can’t really expect any reinforcements (leadership, scoring, or toughness), so the players are going to just keep playing the same hockey they’ve played all season.

Kenndal McArdle was missing from practice, he suffered a leg injury on Wednesday against the Crunch.  No info on if he’ll be playing this weekend.

Amerks Lose to Crunch; Another Long Losing Streak?

February 7, 2008 - By

The Amerks lost to the Crunch tonight in front of less than 1,000 fans, the final score was 3-1.  Based on the way this season has gone since the end of November we can probably expect another eight to ten game losing streak.

Drew Larman scored the Amerks lone goal on the power play after receiving a perfect pass from Gragnani and tapping it into the net.

Steven Goertzen scored the third goal of the game for the Crunch after intercepting a pass directly from Andrej Sekera and then putting it into an empty net.

As the season goes, just about every game recap is basically the same.  The team came out strong in the first period.  A lot of hitting going on, as well as back and forth play between the two teams.  In the first period the Amerks had six shots, the Crunch had five.  But, as the game went on the advantage continued to go in favor of the Crunch as the Amerks were unable to produce any offense.  The Amerks were outshot by Crunch in the second period by the margin of 17-6.

The addition of Chaz Johnson from the Elmira Jackals on a PTO contract added some additional toughness [...]Read More

Patrick Kaleta Called Up to Buffalo Sabres

February 5, 2008 - By

Patrick Kaleta has been called back up to the Buffalo Sabres.  Chances are he’s going to become a human yo-yo for the Sabres for the rest of the season, similar to what Anthony Stewart is for the Panthers.
