Owners say they'll get Amerks stabalized

March 7, 2008 - By

It was reported in the Democrat and Chronicle today that Randall Latona and Walter Turek have committed to stabalizing the Amerks financial issues.  They have put money into the organization to help with paying NHL franchise fee’s.

They also said that talks are ongoing with an investor coming in and buying a majority stake of the franchise, that seems to be the desired outcome by all.

“I can assure you, Randy’s commitment, with Walter as his partner, will not let this franchise fail,” she said. “They have committed funding in order to make this team successful.”

The one concern that should be raised is the following:

April 7, 2006 Randall Latona and Walter Turek formed an entity called T&L Funding Group, LLC which furnished a $2.1 million dollar financing package to the Rochester Americans. Of that loan approximately $700,000 went towards additional working capital, the rest to acquire existing debt.

That was 2 years ago, are we just going to end up back in the same situation in another 2 years if the same ownership group is involved?  If $2.1 million dollars didn’t fix things then, what’s different about now?  We’ll wait and see.

Panthers Also Ready to Leave Rochester

March 6, 2008 - By

The Florida Panthers have come forward stating that the Amerks need to get there financial issues fixed soon, or they won’t be back next season.

The Buffalo Sabres have said they won’t be back as an affiliate next season without new ownership.

Steve Donner plans to sell a majority share of the franchise to a new investor, that sale can’t take place until Donner and partner Walter Turek can finally buy out minority owner Randall Latona.

Those negotiations, ongoing for months, continue to go well, Donner said.

“All the numbers are in order. We’ve come a long way,” Donner said.

All of us want answers (fans and players).  I can’t imagine current Florida Panther prospects were happy to read that the Panthers are ready to keep most players in the ECHL with the Florida Everblades, and spread the rest out across teams in the AHL.

Rochester is behind on affiliation payments to both Buffalo and Florida, with the team agreeing to pay each franchise $18,000 a season for each player on loan — about half the going rate.

The Panthers say they have worked out a payment plan with Rochester, with alternate governor Bill Torrey working out a deal [...]Read More

Rochester Americans Future Still in Question

March 5, 2008 - By

The future of the Rochester Americans needs to be discussed given the recent news of the Rochester Raging Rhino’s and PAETEC Park.

I’ll start by summing up events of recent days and how they’re tied to the Amerks:

PAETEC Park is home of the USL Rochester Raging Rhino’s soccer team.  One of the owners of the Rhino’s is Steve Donner (President & CEO of the Amerks).

The ownership group of the Rhino’s had been trying to court an investor for the team.  They needed someone to take over the loan for the stadium, and invest money into improving it and the team.

On Monday it was announced a deal with Dan Williams (the investor) and the bank h0lding the loan of the park could not be reached, Williams said he was walking away.

On Tuesday some key developments reported by 13 WHAM that can be tied to the Amerks:

1. The city is moving to take over the stadium, perhaps as soon as this week. The city owns the land upon which the stadium is built, and the Rhinos have been in default of their lease.

4. No one knows if a sale of the Rhino’s franchise will happen [...]Read More

Featured Player: Peter Aston

March 4, 2008 - By

 Peter Aston
Defense
02/24/1986
6’1” (185.42 cm)
205 lbs
Toronto, Ontario

Peter Aston is a defenseman who has really come into his own this season with the Rochester Americans.  If the Amerks end up signing a long term affiliation deal with the Florida Panthers, you can bet that Peter Aston is going to play a very important role in the coming seasons before he makes his way to the NHL.

In Aston’s first year in the OHL he saw pretty limited playing time.  He played in 36 games with the Peterborough Petes where he got two goals and three assists and spent 17 minutes in the penalty box.

His second year in Peterborough was much more significant.  He played in 52 games in the 2004-05 season.  He didn’t score any goals but he recorded 15 assists and had a +/- of +7.  He played in all 14 playoff games for the Petes that year where he had 4 assists.

In the 2005-06 season in the OHL he split his time between two teams.  He once again started his season with the Petes.  He had 19 points in 16 games there (4 goals, 15 assists).  [...]Read More

Andrej Sekera Recalled By Sabres

March 4, 2008 - By

Defenseman Andrej Sekera has been recalled by the Buffalo Sabres because of their lack of defense since the trade of Brian Campbell.  The Sabres now have only seven active players on the Amerks roster…hardly living up to anything they should be doing for their affiliate team.

Drew Larman Returned To Rochester

March 3, 2008 - By

Drew Larman was returned to the Rochester Americans today from the Florida Panthers.  Larman has played 37 games with the Amerks and has 13 points (6 goals, 7 assists).

Solid Effort Secures Amerks' Win In 5-3 Victory Over Iowa Stars

March 3, 2008 - By

Amerks’ coach Randy Cunneyworth got his 300th win last night in a 5-3 victory against the Iowa Stars.

Marc-Andre Gragnani had a four point game against the Stars.  Gragnani started his season in Rochester as a defenseman but when the Amerks had a shortage of forwards he was moved to left wing.  His play has improved since moving to that position, as he was struggling as a defenseman with the worst +/- on the team.

Dylan Hunter also tallied four points (2 goals, 2 assists) in the effort against the Stars.  He now has 33 points this season with 13 goals and 20 assists.  Last season in 67 games, Hunter has 28 points, showing his improvement.

Only 26 seconds into the first period it looked like business as usual when the Stars jumped to an early 1-0 lead when all-star center Toby Petersen put his 21st goal of the season past Tyler Plante.

The rest of the first period was a back and forth game between the teams.  Gragnani tied the game 1-1 with a PP goal at 2:59.  The Stars then took the lead again at 6:41 when Konstantin Pushkarev netted a power play goal.  Gragnani wouldn’t let that [...]Read More

Amerks Fall to Crunch, Lose Third Straight

March 2, 2008 - By

The Amerks lost there third straight game against the Syracuse Crunch by the final score of 3-1 in Syracuse.  Randy Cunneyworth is still looking for win #300 and is probably hoping for it by the end of the season.  The only odd thing to report about the game is that during the first period apparently the Amerks consistently had a player at center ice trying to cherry pick.  It didn’t work.

I wasn’t able to listen or watch the game because all of the internet feeds of the game seemed to be down tonight (B2 Networks & Radio), and oddly enough I couldn’t find an AM radio in the house.

So, here’s the Amerks.com report -

The Rochester Americans lost their third straight contest tonight, falling 3-1 to the Syracuse Crunch at the War Memorial at Oncenter. With the loss, Rochester has now fallen to 2-5-0-1 against the Crunch and 17-36-4-4 this season.

Syracuse used three different goal scorers in Clay Wilson, Adam Pineault and Joakim Lindstrom to provide the scoring for the Crunch while Rochester’s lone goal came from the stick of defenseman Martin Lojek.

Adam Dennis recorded a 22-save effort in the loss as Syracuse’s Karl Goehring notched [...]Read More
