Frolik Picks Up Two Points: Panthers Blank Rangers

November 30, 2008 - By

The Florida Panthers blanked the Eastern Conference 1st place Rangers today.

Craig Anderson made 37 saves, only further showing that he is the number one goaltender in Florida.  He also made 43 saves in Friday’s shootout loss, also against the Rangers.  He will be starting again on Tuesday when the Cats make a trip to Washington.

Stephen Weiss and Gregory Campbell scored 12 seconds apart in the second period.

Rookie Michael Frolik had a goal and an assist in the Panthers’ winning effort today.

This was the first time the Rangers were shut out all season.  Nice work Cats.

The Panthers are currently without forwards Richard Zednik, Cory Stillman and Nathan Horton. David Booth left the game in the second period with a shoulder injury and is questionable for Tuesday’s game.  Don’t expect Shawn Matthias back this week.

Amerks Still Searching For First Road Win…Don't Get The Win But, Take a Point

November 30, 2008 - By

Sorry for the lack of reports on the Amerks’ games this week.  The family was on vacation up in Toronto and with the holidays, it has been hard to get thing going.  We will have a full week report after tonight’s game.

The Amerks are currently playing the Toronto Marlies where they are fighting for their first road win.  I am watching the game on AHL Live.  Toronto has a very good feed.  I would recommend if you want to watch an away game on the site, a Toronto one would be the way to go.

The first period is almost over.  3:11 to go.  The score is 1-1.  Jason Garrison scored a nice one on the powerplay a few minutes ago.  I just tuned in (I forgot the game was early tonight) so I didn’t get to see the Marlies’ goal.

David Shantz is in goal for the Amerks.  He has been playing pretty solid this year.  Both in the ECHL with the Dayton Bombers and in Rochester although the loses don’t show that.  He really has improved by a lot after last season.

Amerks score on the powerplay again!  17:31 of the first.  2 for 3 [...]Read More

Scoring Footage from Amerks against Marlies 11/26/2008

November 30, 2008 - By

Here’s video taken of the video screens at the Ricoh Coliseum of the goals scored last Wednesday when the Amerks lost to the Marlies by the score of 3-1.  It was not that bad of a game until about 10 minutes left in the third period when the Marlies either really controlled the game, or the Amerks lost confidence and stopped trying.. you make the call.  Enjoy!

ECHL Player Of The Week, Kevin Baker, Joins The Amerks

November 29, 2008 - By

Right Winger, Kevin Baker, has been recalled by the Rochester Americans.  Baker was just named ECHL’s Player Of The Week.  If he can transfer to the AHL well, Kevin has a real chance to make a big difference for the Amerks.

Bakers numbers this year are great.  He has tallied 25 points in just 15 games, getting 11 of those points in the last three games alone.  Last season, he played 44 games in the ECHL and had 56 points (29 goals, 27 assists).

Kevin has a little bit of experience at the AHL level as well.  In the 2006-07 season, he played nine games in the AHL (2 with the Milwaukee Admirals, 5 with the Toronto Marlies) where he had 2 goals and 3 assists.  In that same season, he played 62 games with the Texas Wildcatters of the ECHL.  There he had another 81 points (36 goals, 45 assists).

Shawn Matthias Recalled By Panthers

November 28, 2008 - By

Shawn Matthias has been recalled by the Florida Panthers.  Although Shawn hasn’t been playing exceptionally well with the Amerks, he also hasn’t had much talent on his wings to help him at all.  Shawn has played all 19 games with the Amerks this season but only has 4 points (3 goals, 1 assist).

Shawn likes to give the opposing team the old razzle dazzle but, hasn’t really been able to finish his plays as of yet.  Hopefully this trip to Florida is just what he needs to get back on track.  He has so much talent, and I want to see him be able to play to his ability.

In his last game with the Amerks (Wednesday against the Toronto Marlies), Shawn played extreemly well.  As another Amerks’ fan who was in attendance pointed out, there were many plays he was a part of that could have ended much better with more talent beside him.

He made one defensive play that really stood out for me. He came all the way from behind the Marlies’ net to pick up a guy in the slot just as a pass was coming to that guy. It would have [...]Read More

Luke Beaverson Reassigned to the Everblades

November 28, 2008 - By

Luke Beaverson has been reassigned to the Florida Everblades (ECHL) by the Panthers.  Beaverson couldn’t quite cut it as a defenseman on a team with little to show in the defense department.  He did play a few games in Rochester as a forward.  In eight games played with the Amerks, Luke talled just one assist.

Randall Gelech Acquired on Loan from Griffins

November 26, 2008 - By

Copied and pasted from Kevin O’s blog, we were out of town when this happened:

Amerks acquire Gelech from Griffins
Filed by Kevin Oklobzija @ 11:57 am on November 26, 2008

Winger Randall Gelech has been acquired on loan by the Amerks from the Grand Rapids Griffins.

It’s never a bad thing when general managers — Jody Gage with the Amerks and Bob McNamara (the former Amerk goalie) with the Griffins — are still great friends.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Gelech is in his fifth AHL season. He played the first three in the Phoenix organization (Utah, then San Antonio) before jumping to the Grand Rapids Griffins last season.

His best year was Year 3, when he scored 17 goals, 17 assists and 34 points in 79 games with the Rampage.

He scored just 7-8-15 a year ago with the Griffins and was a spare part this year (no points in five games).

Gelech won’t be the big scorer the Amerks need, but he does provide size and experience and he can play in every situation.

Archive of Kevin O's live blog with Jack Birch

November 25, 2008 - By

Originally on the Democrat and Chronicle, Kevin Oklobzija had conducted a live chat with the director of player personal for the Florida Panthers, Jack Birch.  These things typically disappear over time on the D&C’s web site, so here is the transcript from that chat:

Conversation with Jack Birch (11/25/2008) 11:59 Scott Norris:  Welcome to our live blog. For the next hour, Jack Birch, director of player personnel for the Florida Panthers, will join reporter Kevin Oklobzija to talk about the state of the Amerks.    To participate, type your name and hometown in the appropriate field below (“Joe from Penfield,” for example) and then type your question. Once you submit your question, it will be reviewed by the hosts and they will select questions to include in their live blog. 11:59 [Comment From Guest]
Mr Birch. How do you and Jacques Martin justify paying Frolik 1.275 Million dollars to play in the NHL when he truly hasn’t developed yet. He was handed the 1st line status a few weeks ago, did nothing with it, and is still in the NHL. I hear rumors of Florida being in payroll trouble, so why would you not put that 1.275M [...]Read More

Amerks' Monday Morning Workout

November 24, 2008 - By

The team was schedule to have practice this morning at 11am, a better term would be that the team had a workout.  They spent 58 minutes on the ice without a single puck.

Benoit Groulx wasn’t kidding after Fridays game when he said that the team whole lot worse on Monday.

The only time Groulx addressed the players directly was to tell them to do push ups.

The last drill involved the players doing sprints from side to side followed by push ups.  One player stood out that appeared to have no issues leaving the ice, and that was Mike Duco.

Was going to take close pictures, but a courteous head shake from a player gave me the hint that it was not the time or place.

As practice ended the team was told to hit the gym this afternoon and be back on the ice at 4pm.  Whether they’ll practice with pucks, or get worked even harder is not known.

Whether it was that or something else, Rory Fitzpatrick was not happy leaving the ice as he slammed his stick against the boards and tossed it into section 123.

Before they all left the ice [...]Read More

Rather than write an article about what was said, we’ve uploaded the audio from both of them for you to listen to.  Things have been moving fast for us this season, in the future we’ll have things like this up much sooner.  Take a listen and share your thoughts!

In a nutshell, what you see is what you get.

To the players who read our site, you may not want to listen!

Jacob MicFlikier Sent to Everblades

November 22, 2008 - By

Jacob MicFlikier was reassigned to the Florida Everblades for the weekend after last night’s game.  There were a few injuries to the ‘Blades in last night’s game and since the Amerks don’t have a game until Wednesday night, they are loaning Jacob for the rest of the weekend.  Expect him to be back with Rochester in time for Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Marlies.
