Matthias and Repik are Back; Sweetland Sent to the Everblades

December 15, 2008 - By

Shawn Matthias

The Florida Panthers sent Shawn Matthias and Michal Repik back to the Amerks.

Matthias has been with the Panthers since November 28th and played in 10 games tallying one point.  He got a decent amount of time on the ice averaging about 12 minutes per game.  Matthias has struggled with the Amerks this season so hopefully the chance he had to fill in with the Panthers along with the Amerks being back to doing well gives the kid a boost of confidence to really show us what he’s made of.

Repik was originally called up on December 6th and scored his first professional goal in his first game with the Panthers.  That was his only point while being called up, he averaged about 8 minutes of ice time.  He’s also the leader in points with the Amerks.

As they arrived back in town Andrew Sweetland left town heading to the Florida Everblades.  In 21 games with the Amerks he has struggled and only managed to get one assist.  He’s a fast skater with decent hands, but just did not seem to have enough talent to keep in the AHL at this time.

Amerks Led By Brodeur Shut-Out the Crunch

December 15, 2008 - By

The Amerks finally snapped a 13 game losing streak against thruway rivals Syracuse Crunch by shutting them out 1-0 at Blue Cross Arena.  It was yet another game of stellar goaltending from Mike Brodeur who is now 4-2-0 since joining the team, this being his second shut-out.  Mike Brodeur was the first star of the game and also the first star of the day in the American Hockey League with 30 saves on the night.

Kenndal McCardle scored the only goal for the Amerks at 7:47 of the first period.  The play started when Jacob Micflikier shot the puck from the face off circle, Stefan Meyer grabbed the rebound and put it back on the net where McCardle was able to put it away for his fifth of the season.

The Crunch had some decent scoring opportunities, especially in the third period.  Derek MacKenzie had a great chance when he took the puck in almost all alone when the Crunch were short handed in the third period, Brodeur made the save but Peter Aston and Noah Welch also showed great hustle getting back and slowing him down.  Maksim Mayorov had another great chance after he received an excellent [...]Read More

Noah Welch Back To The Panthers

December 14, 2008 - By

Noah Welch

Noah Welch left the game tonight with all of his sticks and equipment in tow.  He has finished his conditioning stint in Rochester and will be leaving now back to Sunrise, Florida.

Noah played in all seven games since being assigned to Rochester.  He had 3 assists while here.  We will miss him at practices…he really brought some of the defensemen along to where they needed to be.

This only further proves that the Amerks need to sign another veteran defenseman who can really help the kids.

Tanner Glass Returning to Rochester

December 13, 2008 - By

Tanner Glass

Tanner Glass is returning to the Amerks lineup on Sunday against the Syracuse Crunch, he’s been called up to the Florida Panthers since December 8th.  In 24 games played with the Amerks he has four goals and five assists as well as 69 penalty minutes.

Cory Stillman is expected back in the lineup for the Panthers after being out over a month recovering from post-concussion symptoms, so Tanner is being sent back to make room.

In three games played with the Panthers he averaged about seven minutes of ice time.  The most noticeable incident while he was with the Panthers was when he fought Chris Neil of the Ottawa Senators on December 8th.  The two also fought last season on January 22, videos of both fights below:

Amerks Scare the Monsters In Cleveland

December 13, 2008 - By

Only 13 seconds into the game, Stefan Meyer took on Nathan Smith of the Lake Erie Monsters.

Mike Caruso just gave the puck away right next to the net.  Lucky, Brodeur was ready and stopped the puck before anything bad could happen.  A breakaway was stopped by Keaton Ellerby…but, he also got called for hooking.

Nice job by McArdle, followed his man stride for stride and stole the puck to send it down the ice.  David Brine is showing a great forecheck on the penalty kill.

Brodeur was way too far out of the net, which allowed Mike Vernace behind the net to pass to Chris Durn, who was skating in untouched and easily put it into an open net.

Second period, more of the same.. Amerks take it.. spin it off the boards behind the net and unable to set a play up to take a quality shot.  Or, bring it in and take a shot.. it bounces off an opposing player and they bring it back for a two on two.

Amerks finally get a bounce.. Larman took a shot and everyone was heading to the front of the net, it trickled past Monster’s goaltender, Jason [...]Read More

Amerks Sabotage an Excellent Game For Brodeur

December 13, 2008 - By

Considering how badly the season has gone, it wasn’t until the 27th game of the season that the Amerks were shut out for the first time.  They lost to the Peoria Rivermen (currently in 2nd place in the Western Conference) on Friday night by the final score of 2-0.  The Amerks sabotaged an excellent game from goaltender Mike Brodeur.

This was the Amerks fifth game in seven nights for both teams, the key difference appears to have been the Amerks not being able to overcome a full day of travel on Thursday.

Talking about the schedule coach Benoit Groulx stated, “Its not an excuse but a fact we’ve been traveling a lot lately.  We should have been able to overcome this.  I expected them to have a bad first and then pick it up, but its not the case which is too bad because we sabotaged a great game from Brodeur.  We got a little better but had nothing in the system.  Looking at the schedule we knew tonight was going to be a tough night and its part of a schedule, we’re all facing this and you’ve got to find a way to overcome this [...]Read More

Game #27: Amerks vs Peoria Rivermen at Blue Cross Arena

December 12, 2008 - By

The Peoria Rivermen are in town today to play the Amerks at Blue Cross Arena, game time is 7:35pm.  The Amerks are 3-3-1 in their past seven games making for the best stretch of the season so far.  They’ve already tallied more points and wins this December compared to last years dreadful month.  Tonight will mark the teams third game in four nights with games on Saturday (in Cleveland against Lake Erie) and Sunday (home against Syracuse Crunch).

The Rivermen will be just as tired, they are on a similar four games in a five night stretch and also on a hot streak as well.  They are 4-1 in their past five following a win in Hamilton last night.

Mike Brodeur will be getting the start again tonight for his fourth consecutive start.  He is 2-1 with a 1.31 goals-against average and .953 save percentage.

With Tanner Glass on recall to the Panthers, Michael Caruso was named the teams alternate captain in Texas.  Caruso has played in all 25 games so far this season and only has one goal and one assist.

“Michael has been one of our top defensemen the last seven or eight games,” Groulx said. [...]Read More

Amerks Sign Greg Classen

December 12, 2008 - By

Greg Classen

The first thing I noticed today when I sat down to watch practice was a new face on the ice.  Greg Classen is here!  I’m not sure if he is a PTO for the Amerks or if he is a Panthers’ signing for the year but, he is a vet that is severly needed on the front lines.

Classen has played 90 NHL games with the Nashville Predators.  He has also played in over 350 AHL/IHL games.  This season he played one game with the Providence Bruins and 19 games with the San Antonio Rampage.

He could be the veteran presence the Amerks have needed up front.  We will see what he can do tonight against the Peoria Rivermen.

* Update: He has not yet been cleared to join the active roster while work visa issues are resolved, but he can practice as he did this morning.

Goals (for this site) for 2009

December 11, 2008 - By

One of the keys to success in maintaining a web site that continues to grow over time is to have an understanding of the ‘online world’ and how it grows, evolves, changes, etc.. There isn’t any type of formal class or text book that can help a person accomplish those things, so understanding where to find information on the ever changing cyberspace is crucial.  It’s also important to be an active user and participant, not just a wall flower

Whether you have a web site that is intended to make you money or you’re just blogging about your personal life it’s important to set goals, sort of like a business plan (even if you aren’t in it for the money – we aren’t).  So when I read Daniel Scocco’s post titled “What are your internet goals for 2009?” it put my brain into over drive.

So here’s some goals for Lets Go Amerks! for 2009:
  • Market and promote the site.  Up until now it’s just been a field of dreams, we built it and people came.  Need to go well beyond that in 2009.
  • Network, Network, and more networking!
  • Read the book Sports Media: Reporting, Producing, and Planning
  • [...]Read More

NHL.com Feature Story on Jacob Markstrom

December 11, 2008 - By

It’ll be interesting to see how the Panthers play out the goaltender situation they have brewing.  Jacob Markstrom was drafted 31st overall in 2008 by the Florida Panthers and has been making an impression this year in the Swedish Elite League with his improved play.

Many are expecting the Panthers to start shopping Vokoun around as a trade based on the way Craig Anderson has been out-playing Vokoun.  If that were to occur they would need another goalie in return to backup Anderson.  Vokoun is signed through 2010-2011 and is making $5.7 million a year.  Craig Anderson becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season.  The Panthers have Tyler Plante, David Shantz, Chris Beckford-Tseu and now Mike Brodeur in the system, none which are ready to get called up to the show.

Maybe we’ll see him here in Rochester next season?

Below is a feature article from NHL.com about the young goaltender.

Teenage goalie Markstrom making his mark

Conventional hockey wisdom has it that goaltending is the sport’s great equalizer. There is also a time-honored belief that goaltenders mature later than position [...]Read More
