Amerks Defeat Marlies for Second Win of Weekend

The Rochester Americans won their second game of the weekend as they defeated the Toronto Marlies by the final score of 3-1 in Toronto on Saturday afternoon.  The same two teams will be playing again on Sunday at 6:05pm in Rochester at Blue Cross Arena.

It’s a “Red Hot Sunday” where anyone wearing red can get the best seat in the house for $10.  The Amerks will also be wearing their red road jerseys for the occassion.  Make sure to wear red to join in the spirit and cheer on this team as they improve daily!

As for Saturdays game, between my work schedule and going to the Knighthawks game I wasn’t able to watch or listen to the game.  Rather than make things up and sound as if I know what happened I’ll provide the Amerks press release from the game:

AMERKS SKATE PAST MARLIES WITH 3-1 WIN IN TORONTO

(Rochester, February 21)… The Rochester Americans skated past the Toronto Marlies with a 3-1 victory this evening at Ricoh Coliseum in the first leg of a home-and-home series between the North Division rivals. The Amerks have now won two straight and three of their last four to improve to 22-31-0-5 on the season.

Rochester scored a goal in each period using three different goal scorers in Karl Stewart, David Brine and Shawn Matthias as Tyler Plante made 37 saves en route to third star honors and his fourth win on the season. Janis Sprukts chipped in a pair of assists to garner second star accolades.

Jeremy Williams scored the lone goal for the hometown Marlies and Justin Pogge turned away 26 of 29 shots faced.

The opening period remained in a scoreless standstill until Stewart broke the deadlock with 47 seconds left in the frame to register his 14th goal of the season. Sprukts and Dan Collins each picked up assists on the play as Rochester ended the period with a 1-0 lead.

The Amerks doubled their lead to 2-0 six minutes into the second stanza on the power play after Williams gave Rochester a five-minute man advantage opportunity for boarding. Rochester needed all but a minute as Brine found the back of the net for his sixth tally on the season. Sprukts picked up his second assist of the game and Jason Garrison also picked up his second assist in as many games.

Toronto cut its deficit in half with Williams’ 15th goal of the season at 10:49 of the second period. Todd Perry and Pogge picked up the helpers on the Marlies’ only goal of the contest.

Matthias added the insurance goal, his ninth of the season, midway through the third period to secure the win for the Amerks.

Rochester returns home to The Blue Cross Arena on Sunday, February 22nd to complete the two-game set with Toronto. The 6:05 p.m. contest will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK, whtk.com and AHL Live. The game kicks off Rochester’s first Red Hot Sunday. All fans who wear red to the game can receive tickets for as low as $5 for 200-end seating.

That night, fans can enjoy the Buy One, Get One Half-off special. Fans can purchase a ticket and get another for half the price in any seating section for any Sunday through Thursday game. Tickets can be purchased online only, through Ticketmaster.com. It’s also the next Tickets for Troops night. Active military and veterans can present a Military ID, VA Card or an American Legion or VFW membership card and receive premium seating for just $10 or 200 End seats for $5, at least a savings of $12.25 per ticket. All tickets can be purchased directly at the Box Office window at the Blue Cross Arena. Lastly, fans can head down to The Distillery located at 1142 Mt. Hope Ave. for the Amerks’ official postgame party.
