Trevor Gillies Signs with Bridgeport

October 2, 2009 - By

The Amerks were hit with a surprise left this afternoon when they learned that Trevor Gillies had signed with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.  As of this morning they said they were negotiating with Gillies and thought things were going well.  I guess Gillies didn’t see it that way.

Trevor Gillies exchanging words with Kevin Harvey of the Syracuse Crunch

The team had hoped to have a real heavyweight heading into opening night and for the second season in a row that hope has come crashing down at the last minute.  Last year Steve MacIntyre was claimed off of waivers by the Edmonton Oilers just before the deadline.

Jimmy Bonneau was signed to a PTO contract on Friday morning so the team will have someone in the lineup that can patrol the ice and fight.  James DeLory is still with the team as well and he’s hoping to get the chance to prove himself.

It’d be interesting if they called Mike Sgroi back in to give him another look.

Is this disappointing?  Yes.  But it’s not as if the Amerks don’t have any muscle on the team.  Jimmy Bonneau may not be a heavyweight fighter but [...]Read More

Bonneau Signs, Friday Morning Practice, Party Deck

October 2, 2009 - By

The Amerks are on the ice this morning for possibly the last practice before their first game on Saturday night at home against the Lake Erie Monsters.  As of right now Benoit Groulx has tomorrow morning scheduled off but that could change any at any minute.

Post Practice Update: Jimmy Bonneau and Jon Landry signed a PTO contracts with the Amerks prior to practice this morning which allowed them to be on the ice.  Victor Oreskovich and Trevor Gillies are still negotiating with the team with discussions going well.  I’m sure both will be signed soon.  Goalie Ryan Mior was released.

The first thing you’ll probably notice in the arena tomorrow is the new “Party Deck” located behind at the zamboni entrance end of the arena.  The deck includes sections 103, 102, 101, 129, and 128.  The seats have been taken out and a platform is setup for group rentals.  Lewis Staats said that one of the things they noticed last year traveling around the league was that Rochester was one of the few arenas that did not have an area where fans could be right near the action.  The team was able to work with [...]Read More

What happened to some of last years Amerks?

October 2, 2009 - By

Drew Larman is currently playing with the Providence Bruins

The summer of 2009 has been an exciting one with the roster that has been built for the 2009/2010 Rochester Americans.  There’ll be a lot of questions from fans getting to know some of the new players but also a lot of questions wondering about some favorites from last season.

So here’s a quick rundown of players that are no longer in the Florida Panthers or Rochester Americans organizations:

Tanner Glass – He signed a one year two way deal with the Vancouver Canucks.  After a strong training camp he’s on the Canucks opening night roster.  The Panthers had said they would have liked him back but were not ready to offer him a deal prior to the start of free agency.

Janis Sprukts – is currently playing for Dinamo Riga in the KHL.  Sprukts was unhappy last season when he realized he had no real chance of cracking the Florida Panthers lineup.  So he packed up his things and went across the pond.

Mike Brodeur – The Florida Panthers were ready to offer him a $105,000 contract to stay in the organization but Brodeur thought [...]Read More

Fitzpatrick to Captain Amerks for Second Straight Season

October 2, 2009 - By

(Rochester, NY)… The Rochester Americans announced today the captains for the 2009-10 American Hockey League season. Local hockey product Rory Fitzpatrick will serve as team captain for the second straight season, while veteran forwards Chris Taylor and Graham Mink have been appointed alternates.

Head Coach Benoit Groulx announced the captains just two days prior to the Amerks home and season opener on Saturday, October 3rd. That night, the Amerks battle the Lake Erie Monsters at 7:05 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester War Memorial.

“It’s a tremendous honor,” said the 34-year-old Fitzpatrick, who last season joined Dick Gamble, Al Arbour, Jody Gage, Don Cherry and other Amerk greats who donned the “C” in the 54-year history of the franchise. In 2008-09, the Irondequoit native served as team captain for the first time in his professional career. He has worn an “A” as an alternate captain a few times in his career, including six years ago as an Amerk. Fitzpatrick has played in 717 professional games, including 287 in the National Hockey League with teams in Montreal, St. Louis, Nashville, Buffalo, Vancouver and Philadelphia.

Taylor, who makes his return to Rochester this season, will [...]Read More

Indian Head Nickel at Center Ice Again

October 1, 2009 - By

Lewis Staats places the Indian Head Nickel at center ice

The crews at Blue Cross Arena spent this past Tuesday and Wednesday putting down the ice at Blue Cross Arena for the first time this season.

Last season Lewis Staats and Curt Styres had talked about starting some traditions of their own with the new venture in Rochester.  One of the ideas was to bury a coin at center ice.

That tradition is continuing and the nickel was placed at center ice on Tuesday afternoon prior to the start of the season.

Let’s hope things work out better this season or anyone who is superstituous may want it removed.

Here’s the rest of the story about the nickel from last October:

Embedded under an inch and a half of ice, you will find one of the rarest coins in all of North America, an Indian-head nickel, also known as the buffalo nickel.

The date on the 72-year-old collector’s item reads 1936, and although the date may seem meaningless to many, it actually poses quite the opposite for the Amerks. Coincidentally, 1936 is the inaugural season of operation for the AHL, the very league the Amerks [...]Read More

Here’s my pics from the Amerks vs Crunch game on 9/29/2009 in Syracuse.

The Amerks won 4-2 (game recap)

I don’t consider myself a professional photographer at all and chances are you may have a better camera than me.  After two seasons of taking thousands of pictures I’m finally getting around to uploading the decent ones.  Just about all of the pictures you see used on this site are my own.

You can view all of my pics at http://flickr.com/letsgoamerks, I’ve tried to start labelling a lot of them so if you’re looking for a specific player you can do a search.

Lastly, if anyone out there uses a Canon PowerShot S5 IS and can offer me any tips I’ll take them!  Here’s the pics:
