Weekend Home Games: Amerks vs Crunch and Marlies

November 6, 2009 - By

After what seems like an eternity since last weekends road win in Binghamton the Amerks are finally back to action tonight against the Syracuse Crunch.  On Saturday night they’ll take on the Toronto Marlies.

The last time the Amerks and Crunch played was October 25th when Amerks shutout the Crunch 3-0.  That same game ended with a total of 54 minutes in penalties in the last 10 seconds of the game.

Rochester is currently tied for first place in the league with the Manchester Monarchs at 19 points.  The team certainly does not take their eight game winning streak for granted and they’re certainly not acting over confident.  That will be tested tonight when they play a Syracuse Crunch team that is short on players.

Derek MacKenzie and Alexandre Picard were called up this week by the Columbus Blue Jackets and center Jared Aulin is out of the lineup with a hand injury.  Simon Ferguson was signed to a PTO by the Crunch to join the team for some needed help.

During the 2008/2009 season some teams seemed to take the Amerks lightly and the games were close, that’s something that could happen in reverse [...]Read More

Thoughts of Salak in June Held True in October

November 5, 2009 - By

Alexander Salak was named the Reebok/AHL Rookie of the Month for October, something he worked hard for and earned.  Salak helped to lead the Rochester Americans to the best record in the AHL for the month by going 6-0 with a 1.66 goals-against average and a .947 save percentage.  Salak will look to extend his winning streak to seven games Friday night against the Syracuse Crunch.

I had the great opportunity to be one of the first people to see Salak practice in North American when I went up to the Florida Panthers development camp back in June 2009.  You don’t always see everything in a player during practice sessions, but when it comes to Salak I hit the nail on the head with my writeup about Salak back in June.

About his style:

Salak was not afraid to come out of the net, he does not stay back between the pipes, but seemed to have a sense of where he was at all times.  Another thing that I noticed was that his stick is all over the place.  He was reaching for and poking at the puck every chance he could get.  My first [...]Read More

Amerks Send Chris Beckford-Tseu to Everblades

November 4, 2009 - By

Chris Beckford-TseuAppears as if goalie Tyler Plante has been given the green light to return to action. Chris Beckford-Tseu has been sent back to the Florida Everblades.

Plante had hurt his knee during the October 21st game vs the Binghamton Senators when he was run over multiple times in net.

Jeff Taffe Gets Another Call Up

November 3, 2009 - By

Jeff Taffe The Panthers next game is Wednesday night against the Carolina Hurricanes and Jeff Taffe is headed to the airport to join the big club again.

Updated 6:12pm: Apparently Dominic Moore is not ready to return from the nasal surgery he had to help fix his broken nose.  I had originally speculated he was sent down as a cost saving measure to save the team from having to pay him an NHL salary.

It seems as if I need to just write two standard articles titled “Taffe called up” and “Taffe sent down” to quickly put up throughout the season.

The Amerks next game is Friday night against the Syracuse Crunch, he could be back to Rochester by then.  Based on this past weekends game against the Binghamton Senators we could use him but I think the team will do just fine.

Taffe, Repik, and Ellerby Sent Back

November 1, 2009 - By

Jeff TaffeThe Florida Panthers put Jeff Taffe, Keaton Ellerby, and Michal Repik on a flight back to Rochester on Sunday afternoon.  Ellerby was the only player who did not suit up.  Taffe and Repik both saw some ice time but neither scored any points.

The only newsworthy bit of info worth reporting is that Taffe was hit in the face by a puck during Saturday nights Panthers vs Blues game and comes back with a nice black eye.

Victor Oreskovich and Kenndal McArdle remain with the Panthers.  The next game for the Panthers is Wednesday night against the Carolina Hurricanes.  Oreskovich saw almost 14 minutes of ice time Saturday night and was given credit for three hits in the first period.

The three players returning of the five called up last week are the ones I’d prefer to have back.  McArdle and Oreskovich have proved they’re a part of the Amerks offense but Repik and Taffe are two of the top scorers on the team.

The Amerks return back with back to back home games on Friday versus the Syracuse Crunch and on Saturday versus the Toronto Marlies.
