Tombstone Themed Lid for Tyler Plante

December 15, 2010 - By

In a rare post these days on the site, I thought I’d follow in the steps of George Richards showing off the new lid of Tomas Vokoun and post pics of the new lid being worked on by Dan Lessard of rembrantsbrush.com for Amerks goalie Tyler Plante.  The lid is (obviously) inspired by the 1993 movie Tombstone. On one side is a big picture of Doc Holliday who was played by Val Kilmer and on the other side is Wyatt Earp who was played by Kurt Russell.  The chin of the mask has a badge that says Tyler Plante with the #35 in it.  The one thing that needs to be changed though is the removal of the six shooters.  Apparently people higher up don’t want an image of guns. Lame.

Go back in time three years and it’s when we first posted pics of the current helmet featuring Ricky Bobby and Chazz Michael Michaels.

A Win vs Baby Pens Will Preserve an Amerks Record

November 4, 2010 - By

Quick note as I’m trying to return from a hiatus… The Rochester Americans set the current AHL record for most consecutive wins to start a season back in the 1984-1985 season with 11 wins.  The Baby Pens who are currently undefeated at 8-0 have their eyes on that record.. the Amerks and Pens just so happen to play twice this weekend.

The Amerks and Pens play on Friday and Sunday.  Amerks travel to Albany on Saturday and the Pens back to Wilkes-Barre to play Syracuse.  Both teams will have some bus travel so neither will have an advantage for the game on Sunday.  All it’ll take is a miracle of a win against the Pens in one of the two games or a Pens loss against Syracuse and the record will stay intact.

With all the “turmoil” in the news regarding player moves, this Amerks team has been playing competitive hockey. These games will be a real test to see what they’re capable of.

Sharky Loses Battle to Cancer

Sharky Loses Battle to Cancer

The Rochester area lost one of it’s best citizens, Craig Charron. He passed away on Tuesday to a battle with cancer.  Craig Charron was 42 years old and put up the best fight that he could.  Thoughts go out to his family, friends and everyone who knew him.  He touched a lot of lives.

From the Amerks:

“It is a real sad day. We all have heavy hearts with the passing of ‘Sharky.” We all knew he was a great player, but more importantly he was an amazing young man,” said Amerks Director of Player Personnel and former teammate Jody Gage. “He will be truly missed. Our thoughts are with Wendy and the four kids. We extend our love and support in this most difficult time.”

In memory of Craig, the Amerks will wear his No. 5 tonight on their helmets when they play the Hamilton Bulldogs. The Amerks will have a pregame tribute to “Sharky” Saturday night. There will be further recognition of his outstanding career at a more appropriate time.

Nylander Leads Amerks to a 5-2 Win Over the Phantoms

Nylander Leads Amerks to a 5-2 Win Over the Phantoms

Ahh it’s been a while.. after a few weeks absent from the rink I was finally able to make it to an Amerks game and was treated to a nice 5-2 win over the Adirondack Phantoms.  Michael Nylander led the way with two goals and two assists in the game.

Even though I missed the home opener, this was the first game of the season for myself so it was great to see some hockey again, get a cold Genny Light from the Blue Zone and watch the kids play knee hockey behind section 127.

Michael Duco scored first at 17:07 of the first period just after a power play opportunity ended.  A lot of people in the crowd were yelling the typical “shoooooot it” but patience paid off when Duco shot in a rebound for his second goal of the season.  There weren’t that many chances for a shot but the puck possession paid off.

Interesting little scrap early in the second period when Matt Clackson (brother of Amerks forward Chris Clackson) cross checked Triston Grant to the ice in front of the Phantoms net.  Referee Terry Koharski had his arm raised to make the call on Clackson before [...]Read More

Amerks Lose 7-3 vs Marlies in Preseason Game

Amerks Lose 7-3 vs Marlies in Preseason Game

The Amerks played their first of two preseason games against the Toronto Marlies on Friday night and lost by the final score of 7-3.  Not much is known about the game other than Michal Repik, Triston Grant and Ryan Del Monte scored goals for the Amerks.  Tyler Plante played the first approximately 30 minutes and only allowed one goal.  Marc Cheverie replaced Plante midway through the second period and the other six goals were scored against.

The only thing I’d take away from the loss is that Cheverie has some work to do.  The same can probably be said about Brian Foster who I am assuming will see some action on Saturday.  Right now those two are battling to be the first call up when either Markstrom or Plante get injured or called up at some point this season, something that’s guaranteed to happen (an injury or callup that is).

The same two teams play again Saturday evening at Gaylord Powless Arena in Ohsweken, Ontario.  It’s considered a home game for the Amerks so we’ll probably get some better updates as the Amerks staff will be working the game.

Here’s the recap from the Amerks about the game:

Amerks to End Camp, Two Preseason Games vs Marlies

October 1, 2010 - By

The Amerks will end training camp Friday morning with a morning skate at Blue Cross Arena at 9am before hitting the road for two preseason games against the Toronto Marlies.  The two games will be the last chance for many players to try and earn a spot on the Amerks roster or be sent to an ECHL team.  Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be making it to either game.  If anyone is feel free to share a writeup of some sort about the games.

The first preseason game is Friday night at 6pm at Bob Fallis Arena in Bradford, Ontario.  The second game is Saturday night at Gaylord Powless Arena in Ohsweken, Ontario.

Admission for the second game in Ohsweken is $7.00 per person, while children 12 and under are free. Amerks Owner Curt Styres will donate all of the proceeds to Six Nations minor youth hockey programs. Prior to the game, Amerks Vice President of Hockey Operations Ted Nolan, Amerks Director of Player Personnel Jody Gage, Head Coach Chuck Weber and Assistant Coach Jason Cipolla will hold a youth hockey clinic at the arena from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Amerks and Panthers will both make cuts by [...]Read More

Amerks Cut Six from Training Camp Roster

September 30, 2010 - By

The Rochester Americans officially end training camp on Friday morning and on Thursday afternoon trimmed the roster by six players.  There will be more cuts after this weekends preseason games against the Toronto Marlies.  The players cut were Brennan Sarazin, Tobias Whelan, Greg Collins, Chris Moran, Jeff Caister, and Riley Weselowski.

None of those players were expected to make the team but were all given an honest look to be potential call ups later in the season if needed.

Also, if you’re in front of the TV at 6pm tune to News 10 NBC for a story on Amerks Head Coach Chuck Weber spending the afternoon personally delivering season tickets.  I was asked if I was going to be home to have our tickets delivered but said no one would be available, if I had known this I would’ve made sure to be available.

Panthers Loaned Michael Nylander for Amerks

September 30, 2010 - By

The big news of yesterday was that Michael Nylander has been loaned to the Florida Panthers by the Washington Capitals and will play for the Rochester Americans.  Of course, the news happened when I was away from cyberspace for the day.  Nylander was acquired as a replacement for the injured Mark Cullen who was slated to be the Amerks number one center this season.  The Panthers could have just waited until training camps finished to see how the team looked but they didn’t, they made a move to get a guy who still has some gas left in the tank and will be great with the younger players.

From Kevin O’s blog:

“He’s coming here to help our young guys,” Panthers assistant general manager Mike Santos said. “He’s not coming here grumbling. He wants to resurrect his career for one more shot.”

A year ago the Capitals decided they didn’t need Nylander and he was loaned to Jokerit-Helsinki in the Finnish League 3-4-7 in 14 games) and also played for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL (2-16-18 in 24 games) on Washington’s dime.

In 2008-09, his last NHL season, he scored 9-24-33 in 72 games for the Capitals. [...]Read More

Bits of News on Carl Hudson, TJ Fast and Bill Thomas

September 28, 2010 - By

The Amerks finished day two ofn training camp with some drills and what Chuck Weber called a controlled scrimmage.  Its still impossible to really predict how the team will do but one thing is very different and that’s the way training camp and practices seem to be run.

(More on practices below info about Thomas, Fast and Hudson)

Bill Thomas was one of the first players signed by the Panthers when free agency started and while he had one great season with the San Antonio Rampage he hasn’t had a year like that since.  He was impressive in camp this morning with his speed and handling of the puck while playing as a center.

“He’s a veteran guy that has played both center and wing, with the injury to Cullen we’re trying him out there at center,” Chuck Weber said about Bill Thomas.  “Ideally he’s going to play right wing but in a pinch we can play him at center.”

Weber is looking for Thomas to be a veteran presence and use his size to get up and down the wing, bang some bodies and create some space that will create scoring opportunities.

Another player that looked impressive today was [...]Read More

Duco, Dadonov, Repik and Timmins Also Sent to Amerks

Duco, Dadonov, Repik and Timmins Also Sent to Amerks

As the preseason slowly winds down it also means more and more roster cuts as the days go on.  After the Florida Panthers loss to the Montreal Canadians on Monday night the Panthers sent Mike Duco, Evgeny Dadonov, Michal Repik and Scott Timmins to the Rochester Americans.  You could also say they were cut from the roster.

Again, no real surprises.  Dadonov and Repik have shown they have some speed and scoring touches but not to the point yet of earning a full time roster spot.  Mike Duco fought Ryan White twice during the game but it apparently wasn’t enough to keep him on the roster any longer.  Scott Timmins was planned for Rochester the whole time.

Under the category of “not really paying attention,” it appears as if Carl Hudson hasn’t even put skates on yet in training camp.  According to Kevin O at Hockey O-Zone Hudson was told to check out and not allowed near the practice facilities.  Sounds like an interesting story brewing!

One player still with the Panthers that could be on their opening night roster is Kenndal McArdle.  With two surgically repaired shoulders McArdle plays with grit, speed, isn’t afraid to hit someone and [...]Read More

Eric Selleck and James DeLory Square off in Training Camp

Eric Selleck and James DeLory Square off in Training Camp

The first day of training camp usually isn’t all that exciting as players and coaches are just going through some drills, getting to know each other and getting their legs stretched.  James DeLory and Eric Selleck made it interesting though when about half way through they dropped their gloves and helmets to try and trade a few punches by the visitors bench.  As you can see in the quick video they squared off but didn’t get far before Amerks head coach Chuck Weber and assistant coach Jason Cipolla stepped in to break them up.

Chuck Weber was pretty vocal on the ice afterwards telling DeLory that he told them no fighting.  After practice Weber said that DeLory had surgery over the summer (didn’t say what kind of surgery) and didn’t want him getting into any fights.  He said that he knows guys are itching to go but he didn’t want it to happen.  Weber also commented that DeLory apologized after practice… and everyone lives happily ever after.

This will be DeLory’s third training camp with the Amerks and is likely looking to make his name known and try to move up a level in professional hockey.  I didn’t have the [...]Read More

Tyler Plante, Bill Thomas and Triston Grant Sent to Amerks

September 27, 2010 - By

The Florida Panthers reduced their training camp roster by two more players today by putting Triston Grant and Bill Thomas on waivers.  Assuming they clear waivers, which they will, they’ll be assigned to the Rochester Americans.  Tyler Plante was also sent back to the Amerks, not sure if he had to officially go on waivers or not..  Grant is a physical player who also has a scoring touch.  Bill Thomas from what I’m told is a great two way player who could have some scoring capabilities.

Tyler Plante made three outstanding saves in last Thursdays preseason game against the Bruins.  If Plante can stay injury free and also keep the bullseye off of his back from being hit he should have a career season.
