News from Amerks Practice, No One Missing… Yet

March 3, 2010 - By

Walking into Amerks practice expecting to see a key player or two missing and on their way to the Florida Panthers but so far that’s not the case.

With the talks of Florida trading Vokoun or Seidenberg I was expecting to see Alexander Salak and Keaton Ellerby missing, but they are still in the building. The Panthers have a game tonight at home vs the Flyers, I suppose they could have a charter plane on standby.

The team is having two different practices though, not unusual but rare after two days off the ice. While one group is on the ice the other is doing work in the gym.

On the ice right now I would probably list as not going anywhere. Those players are Steve MacIntyre, Jimmy Bonneau, Tyler Plante, Jeff Taffe, Graham Mink, Rory Fitzpatrick, Jamie Johnson, Jordan Henry, Luke Beaverson, and Mike York.

I’ll try and have more updates as the morning goes on.

Actions of Panthers Will Speak for Themselves on Deadline Day

March 3, 2010 - By

The NHL trade deadline is at 3pm and the entire Florida Panthers organization has sunk into another few years of “rebuilding.”  The Panthers have already traded Jordan Leopold and Dominic Moore for draft picks, one pick in 2010 and one in 2011.  Jason Garrison was called up to the Amerks to replace Leopold and Shawn Matthias called up to replace Moore.  I think both of those players have improved as the season has gone on, something that can’t be said for the rest of the prospects.

The Panthers can dump all of the players they want for draft picks but when the current talent pool of prospects is underachieving, miserable, and not improving it paints a horrible outlook on the entire organization.  This season was supposed to be different for the Panthers and the Amerks.  This season they were going to make the playoffs, the prospects were going to get better.  None of that has happened for the Panthers.  The Amerks have stayed near the top of their division because of the money spent by Amerks owner Curt Styres.  If it wasn’t for him the Panthers affiliate in the AHL would again be one of the worst.

Beware Amerks Fans, Panthers Start Trading

March 1, 2010 - By

The NHL trade deadline is on Wednesday and the sell off of the Florida Panthers has started and it will have an impact on the Rochester Americans.  The next few days we’ll get a better idea of whether or not the Panthers have any intentions of helping the Amerks make a run for the Calder Cup.

The Panthers traded d-man Jordan Leopold on Monday morning to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 2nd round draft pick in 2010.  That move will likely result in Jason Garrison being called up for the remainder of the season.

There’s also a rumor that Dennis Seidenberg could be on the trading block as well.  If that happens we can say goodbye to Keaton Ellerby as well (some might say that would be a good thing).

Luke Beaverson will likely be returned and play on defense.  If Ellerby is called up as well we’ll likely see Matt Duffy called up from the Everblades.  No matter how it’s looked at these two moves alone hurt the Amerks.  We just have to hope AJ Thelen does not get the call.

So far the Panthers are not showing any indication of helping out their prospect pool with players, just [...]Read More

Taffe and York Lead Amerks to OT Win

March 1, 2010 - By

When Jeff Taffe, Jamie Johnson, and Mike York find ways to put points on the boards it’s pretty much a given that the Rochester Americans will find a way to win.  Taffe scored two goals including the game winner, Johnson had one goal and one assist, and Mike York assisted on all four goals scored.

The Amerks ended the weekend with four out of six possible points which is pretty good.  If they can finish out the season winning every two out of three games I think they’ll be in good shape.  The Amerks and Heat are currently tied for second place in the North Division with 70 points each and the Heat have a game in hand.

It wasn’t a pretty game.  Binghamton scored two shorthanded goals.  The ref appeared to waive off what should have been a goal for the Amerks.  A number of bad and missed calls for and against both teams.

Jamie Johnson had an explanation saying, “I think every Sunday afternoon game is weird.”

The Amerks had a 3-2 lead heading into the last minute of the game but Jonathan Cheechoo scored at 19:18 to tie the game and send it [...]Read More
