TRADE: We've acquired defenseman Jack Dougherty from Nashville in exchange for Nicholas Baptiste:

bufsabres.co/sZSZGt

The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has acquired defenseman Jack Dougherty from the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Nicholas Baptiste.

Dougherty (6'1", 186 lbs., 5/25/1996) has spent each of the last two seasons playing for the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL), where he appeared in 141 career AHL contests. Nashville's second-round pick (51st overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft, Dougherty also appeared in three playoff games for the Admirals.

Before turning pro, Dougherty played one season for the Portland Winterhawks (WHL). In 68 games for Portland, the St. Paul, Minnesota native ranked second among team defensemen with 52 points (11+41). He also spent the 2014-15 season with the Wisconsin Badgers (NCAA), where he finished with nine points (2+7) in 33 games as a freshman.

Dougherty recorded four points (2+2) in seven games as a member of the United States team that won the gold medal at the 2014 IIHF World U18 Championship.

Baffling that we need another defenseman but not bummed about Baptiste going elsewhere.

Baptiste thinks he belongs in the NHL. Lets see if Nashville thinks so.

Good move. I'd have taken a bag of pucks. But if we ge Tennyson, we'll have 11 D-men and 15 forwards. They signed all these vets and then kept acquiring defense. I worry that this approach will scare of future vets once these contracts are up. I wonder if Paetsch and Fedun are transitioning to more "Mentor" Future Coach roles? Both were not up to normal snuff last year in my opinion. Great guys for the room, but on-ice they were a little older and slower. Are they happy to be depth guys here? I'd sit Tennyson over either, but we all know that's not happening. Do we think Hickey has a spot in the top 6? Or would he be a play for Cincy? I hate that MacWilliam will probably have to sit. He's an anchor back there. Now where does Dougherty go? Here? Cincy? I figure the top four opening night are Redmond, Guhle, Pilut, Borgen. Then you have Paetsch, MacWilliam, Fedun, Hickey & Dougherty fighting for 2 spots. I'd Like MacWilliam to have one of those then the other would be maybe Dougherty? Maybe Hickey? But I'm sure they'll put Fedun in or send Tennyson down and put him in.

With an abundance of defensemen it means $hi* will probably hit the fan and it'll all be too good to be true.

Meanwhile, the Marlies just got Sam Gagner on loan. Must be nice to have the Leafs running the show.....
