If You Watched this Mess Tonite.....

Post by insagt1 » Wed Dec 19, 2018 11:01 pm

Sitting in the stands watching the Amerks fall completely asleep for the final two periods, one can only wonder in amazement....how can this happen?

In what should have been a nice entertaining evening for the home team, it turned into a complete nightmare. The wheels came totally off and all that was left was sparks on the pavement. How a team can so completely shut down after building a 4-1 lead after only a minute into the 2nd period is why there may be little hope that these guys are a serious playoff team.

Belleville so totally dominated play for the final 40 minutes you would have thought they were playing a beer league team. Amerks refused to shoot the puck and when they did it was off the mark. There was no sustained pressure. Unfortunate penalties resulting in two costly PP goals. And then the coup de grace....with just over 2 minutes to play they broke down the ice 3 on 1 and Bailey completely screwed up the play. His weak, ill advised attempt at a pass ended up in a Belleville rush the other way and the game tying goal. My friend looked at me and said, 'looks like OT' and I said...'I doubt it...look how completely fired up the Sens are. Amerks never really touched the puck after that goal and less than a minute later it was 5-4 BadGuys.

How MANY times have the Amerks given up late goals this year? They were so badly outplayed, we all agreed they didn't deserve to win tonite. It was a shabby performance from a team that simply stopped playing. they turned off the ignition and lost the game fair and square. How bad was Wedgewood? Meh....probably not his fault. His teammates were dreadful in front of him. Nylander can't be blamed either because he didn't play...Bailey was putrid. Redmond was awful. And on and on.

An ugly ugly loss. And another game where being the home team was irrelevant. Once the Sens made it 4-2 they were in complete command of this game. Amerks inability to generate ANY offense for the final 39 minutes was maddening.

You walk out the BCA mumbling....how are these guys in 1st place? Gosh, it stunk out loud. Even the over the top way too loud music during warmups wasn't as annoying as the way the guys played tonite.

Post game interviewers tried so very hard to find positives on this horrible night but to his credit, Taylor was having none of it. He said the effort wasn't there. They didn't play well in the 1st (only bad goaltending allowed the 3-0 lead); they didn't play well in the middle and they didn't play well at the end.
He looked like he was controlling his anger and not buying ANY excuses at all. Good!
Paetsch said the same. The effort wasn't there. The team played lousy. No excuses.
On a night when you blow a game like this, there SHOULDN'T be hearts and flowers talk. It was miserable and at least the Coach pretty much said it.
He was completely unimpressed as well he should have been.

It isn't just the Amerks. The Admirals were leading Rockford 3-0 and coasted to a 4-3 OT LOSS!

Its a modern player mentality. You see this across all sports and across all leagues. The player investment has become so large that they have tried to bring in player guru's rather than coaches. The Joe Torre model. He was an average manager on a good day. His teams were so loaded that they didn't need much. But "Player Friendly Coaches" have lead to this. Look at the most successful teams in recent years. In Hockey, look at the Blackhawks and the Kings. Were Quenneville or Suter "Player Coaches"? Not that I have heard. Is Belichick a player friendly guy? Doubt it. It his way or the highway. They have released a number of very good players over the years. He has no loyalty. You lose a step or demonstrate a bad attitude, go play for the bills or the jets. If you have an absolutely loaded team, you can hire a guru. But if you are just a good team or worse, I think we need to stop worrying about the players feelings and get a real red a$* in these jobs.

Amerks attendance after 16 home games (15 not counting the bogus Buffalo count) averaging 4,219. 3 of our last 5 home games have drawn official counts of under 3,000, with many fewer actually in house. they have 3 crowds of over 6,000, with 6,756 being tops. Usually attendance picks up after the first of the year. Last year the official count (average) was 5,195. In 2016-17 it was 5,328; in 15-16 it was 6,067; in 14-15 it was 6,165; and in 13-14 it was 5,412.
Last 6 home games have averaged 3,656. Horrible. Fans here have not embraced the way the team has played at home. They will need quite a boost to get the average back over 5,000.

Just some quick math that might be a little off:

To hit average attendance of 5,000 for the season we need 185,000 total(over all 37). We're currently at 67,504 based on your numbers after 16 games, so we need 117,496 over the last 22 games, which is an average of 5,304 per game. We also have 6 more Wednesday games, and if you assume we're only going to get 3,000 per game for those(I know, I'm being generous) then we'd actually need 85,504 over the remaining 16 "other" games, which is 6,218 per game. Seeing as we only have hit 6,000 three times this year, it seems like a 5,000 average is a pretty lofty goal, unfortunately.

The math sure doesn't look favorable does it. Well...if you do count the bogus 15,965 from the Buffalo game (where maybe 3,000 were in attendance) our average over 16 games is 4,953...much closer to 5,000 but completely disingenuous IMO.

To be optimistic....IF the team somehow keeps winning and stays on top (tall order) perhaps the winter to spring games will generate some excitement. We have a lot more games with Syracuse left for example. Too bad we can't convince Gionta to play one more game for us! Wednesdays have been a trainwreck for us this season so far. Nobody is turning out. We are 10-6 at home and many of those 10 wins have not exactly been barn burner exciting. the losses have been aggravating and downright ugly. I thought last years team was mostly unwatchable (despite the point total) the playoffs simply put an exclamation point on that for most of us. this year's team is becoming unwatchable, despite the record. I say this because they have continually made the same mistakes game in and game out, with no corrections. In most games with 5 minutes or less to go...you just want to turn away.

Is this a coaching problem? Some here say yes absolutely.

You can only put up with stupid penalties, late goals against, and a non-existent power play so long before you kind of lose interest. None of those things will get you thru the 1st round. Then you take the fact that the local media ignores the team; and the marketing department went on vacation months ago ....how does anyone expect fans to turn out? Fireworks?

Will we ever see 8-9K in house again? Are those days long gone? Maybe.

Not until we're playing hockey into mid/late May or early June.
