The week begins in Cleveland

Post by insagt1 » Tue Feb 12, 2019 8:21 am

Big week ahead for the Amerks. And it sounds like its probably a Redmond-less week, which is really bad news. We were hoping he'd be ready, at least for the Syracuse games. Maybe???? Hope hope....or, were they only just teasing us telling us he was just about ready...when in reality, he could be weeks away still? We've heard that song played before, many many times. Grumble grumble....

Anyway, since our last games with Cleveland, the Monsters have really fallen on hard times. Let's keep it that way. Amerks enter the week clinging by fingernails to the top spot they have enjoyed pretty much all season. But the moment of truth comes this week...with back to back games against the Crunch, after tonites game.

Crunch have schooled the Amerks in how to win big games the last two times out. Both times, Amerks had leads, but failed to finish...the most recent one the ugliest, when they simply stopped playing in the 3rd period, OT, and shootout. Amerks are a very strange outfit. They have won 6 times when TRAILING after 2 periods; but they have lost 5 times when LEADING after 2 periods Hmmm.

Does this mean that we are better off being behind late in games, rather than leading? Amerks have struggled to hold leads all season. It isn't just a recent thing...it has been an entire season thing. There is no telling how good we could be if we could finish what we started. Its up to them to fix this. I have to assume the coaching staff has addressed it. Its getting late and the post season looms...an unforgiving best of 5 series that doesn't allow for this sort of thing.

And isn't that what we are playing for? Our post-season failures have stretched for over a decade. Our last trip to the Finals has been nearly 20 years ago. As the song goes...the time for hesitating's through; no time to wallow in the mire...the rest of the regular season becomes a dress rehearsal for the games that really mean something...and the fans of this city deserve more than 20 years of playoff misery. It would be fun to see the BCA filled with excitement again. (wear the 96 Cup unis again...get new ones and wear them!)

Games In Hand:
I hate games in hand. And for most of the season it seems that the Crunch have had games in hand on us..giving us that uneasy feeling that we really aren't in first place. Anyway, I finally took a look at the remaining schedules of the two teams to find out when things even out.

For the most part, Syracuse will keep 2 games in hand for the rest of the month. The two teams will have played the same number of games after the Crunch game on March 6th.
Crunch will again gain a GIH midmonth for about a week. Amerks get the GIH after the Crunch play their 2nd of backtoback games against Charlotte on March 19th and 20th but erase that 2 days later.
Amerks will again get a GIH after the Crunch play on Apr 23rd. They don't play that GIH until Apr 8th and then the two teams each finish the schedule with a 3 in 3 weekend...which includes a head to head match on Sat Apr 13, the second to last day of the season.

What this all means to me is that we have to be very careful not to lose games for the remainder of February since the Crunch will still have those 2 GIH in their back pocket.

We still have 7 to play against the Crunch. Syracuse has 5 more against Utica. Both Amerks and Crunch have 2 to play against Charlotte.

Whether any of this will be meaningful as we head into the final weeks will play out over the next few weeks.

These bad 3rd periods will actually be their downfall in the playoffs. This is way too many games like this. But our coach sees no problem.

It just seems that the more our chronic problems surface, the more defensive Taylor gets. You don't throw your team under the bus publicly...but you can also say things that make it clear you aren't happy with certain issues that go unresolved, without naming names.

I'm pretty sure Sabres fans will point to Nylander's absence as the reason the team is struggling!!

I'm sure you are joking. That's addition by subtraction IMO.
They spent their own dough to get here, and they came here to see us! All right, let's show 'em what we got, guys! Get out there on the ice and let 'em know you're there.
