Great Finish To the Weekend!

Post by insagt1 » Sun Feb 17, 2019 10:09 pm

Oh, if only Cornel's shot had gone in that wide open net.....we could have been looking at a super weekend....as it is, the clutch win Saturday was followed up this afternoon by a thorough beatdown of Binghamton 5-1. This is the way the Amerks are supposed to play at home. A pretty solid 3 period effort by everyone, in front of a decent Sunday crowd of over 5,800. As a result, Amerks are up by 3 points, forcing the Crunch to win tomorrow to get back to 1 point again with 2 games in hand.

Some of our new guys are starting to make an impact, and thats a good thing because the Sabres are probably poised and ready to make changes as trade deadline draws near. Today, the new line of Elie, Leier and Oglevie looked like a total winner. Those 3 are adding a ton of zip, that has been missing from so many Amerk teams in years past. While they may not be the same type that joined the Amerks in '96 about this time of the season...propelling the team to the Calder Cup...you never know.

And how refreshing to hear the post game interview with Taylor Leier...especially after listening to the crap spewed by Nylander. Leier just looks and sounds genuinely happy being here. He is a solid addition and has already made a bigger impact than Bailey made all season here. And how can you not like Nathan Paetsch....finally getting to play but letting us all know he is here to win a Cup for his team and his city. Listening to guys like that makes you want to just will a Calder Cup to the red white and blue.

Mentioned earlier that Elie is probably happy to be playing again after rotting on the Sabres bench. The guy is clearly talented and motivated to play hard.
A guy who isn't getting that much attention is Veilleux...who has amped up his game considerably. He is hard nosed and is playing his best hockey of the season.

As for Nylander...after he has made it pretty clear he doesn't want to play here anymore....his #92 should be removed from jerseys, and the Sabres need to trade him ASAP. I suppose the could call him up but what a terrible message that would send to the guys who work hard and want to be here. The kid doesn't fit in and shouldn't continue to infect the dressing room.

Great game all around from everyone especially after a battle of two games vs Syracuse. Helps that Bingo is at the bottom but whatever, we crushed the team we're supposed to crush! About time. That line of Elie, Leier, Oglevie was great and hopefully stays together for more action. On the offensive side, I don't see any reason anything should change between the Sunday line and lineup for Wednesday.

Great game Sunday. My only concern is that things seem to have flipped form earlier in the season and we are struggling against top teams and now beating up on the little guys. We won a game we should have and that is great. Hopefully some healthy guys coming back and a little consistency and we get on another role. I've said it before, Remi Elie seems like a blood an guts guy and with his offensive contributions, that has been a great pick for us. I would like to see a little more offense acquired at the deadline if possible, but a Guy like Elie is going to play a bi role in the post season. He Veilleux and Smith are guys we need to play that physical up tempo game. Nice to see Ogelvie get in on the action. that was a snipe.

to steal from Marty....dis and dat---The Calder Cup run has begun in earnest. Its time to play our best players. As our star still rises, the Sabres star is setting. The post game questions were pretty brutal and Begosian and Reinhart fielded them uncomfortably...which was understanding. Questions such as 'are you toast'; are you still a playoff contender rankled the players...but maybe it will motivate them? I would make the new line we saw yesterday line #1 or #2. They were leaders; they were confident; they had instant chemistry and they are also the kind of players a Cup contender needs.

Simpson has sort of picked up the torch as O'Regan struggles and Smith is up in Buffalo. Olofsson has been streaky all season. And we really need Redmond back to anchor the 'd', which has had its ups and downs.

Honestly, Paetsch needs to stop being a spare part and he needs to join the 'd' rotation. He is too valuable and talented to sit around at Buffalo's whim.
Watching him yesterday...he plays like a Calder Cup defenseman.
Veilleux has been very impressive this month. He also needs to play regularly now. Cornel and Randell are swing players. Nylander should never play again here. Malone and Wilson need to step up (when healthy) Wilson hasn't added much and Malone hasn't either. Crisco is too often injured. Can he play a significant role down the stretch?

After a couple of off games, the goalies had a good weekend. They still need consistency but both played real well in the past 3 games. Wilcox was surprisingly strong Saturday.

Attendance...yes its hard to compare 'atmospheres' with small buildings and large. When our capacity was 7,500...crowds of 6,000+ rocked the house. When we saw chairs set up on the old stage, we knew it was going to be fun night (and FWIW...it wasn't the loud music that stirred up the crowds)
A crowd of 3,900 in a tiny building will always generate more excitement than 3,900 in the cavernous BCA...and many of us wish we were back to 7,500 capacity again...and where it might have been tough to get a ticket. It is what it is.

16 or 17 more wins in the final 24 games gets us 100 points. Its doable. The news that the 'home' game in Buffalo has been scrapped is just great news. The last 2 or 3 years, that game didn't draw flies and its now unnecessary.
