Wasn't Pretty But It's a 'W' 5-3

It was a strange game indeed. It was one the Amerks needed to win, they should have won, but struggled to do so. Until Taylor Leier hit the empty net with a half minute to play, the outcome of this one was still in doubt.
Despite the fact that 12 regular Devils were on recall to NJ, and the Binghamton team was pieced together with duct tape, they gave the sluggish at times Amerks all they could handle.

the first 19 minutes of the game were just plain ugly. Amerks were running around, disorganized, and clearly being outworked by the less talented but spirited Devils. Then in the final minute, they somehow put home two...one by Leier and the other by Nylander. (young Alex now has goals in 4 straight games)

The 2-0 lead however never felt secure and the Devils fought back to tie midway thru the 2nd period. It just seemed inevitable. Then just as strange, Amerks came right back less than a half minute later to regain the lead 3-2 on a blast by Olofsson. Then with 6 seconds to go in the period, Amerks went on the PP and instead of just running out the clock, Olofsson scored again with 2 seconds left to restore the two goal lead.

Still, Binghamton was not to go quietly. They closed the gap to 4-3 early in the 3rd period and continued putting on the pressure until Leier sealed it into an empty net with half a minute to play. It shouldn't have been this difficult, but it shows that even when your opponent is badly out talented, you can't take them for granted.

But as we have pointed out earlier, there are no extra points for style. Its all about the 'W's now and the Amerks got the 2 points. With the win they have equaled their win total from last season, improving to 37-18-5. Last years Amerks lost 17 in OT/SO, so its pretty clear this years team will win several more and probably not come close to the number of loser points they piled up last season.

Crunch were beaten in OT so Amerks picked up a big point on them, trailing now by just 1 point. Amerks play Sunday afternoon while Crunch are idle, so if they can beat Binghamton again at the BCA, they will regain 1st place again..albeit giving Syracuse back a game in hand. Amerks should be able to win, but if they play as uneven as they did tonite, it won't be a slam dunk...which it really should be against such a depleted of AHL talent as the Devils.

Taylor Leier continues to impress with two more goals...he has 17 now, 7 with the Amerks (plus 2 game winning SO goals) Olofsson leads the team with 23 goals. Nylander suddenly has 12 (could he possibly get 20?) Wilcox was solid in victory. Wedgewood will probably get the start Sunday.

We said we had to have 6 points this weekend. We have 4 so far. Time to finish the job and then look to Utica and Charlotte next week.

The gap between Charlotte and everyone else has closed. Crunch are just 3 behind and Amerks just 4 behind and each has a two game set with the Checkers coming up. Amerks and Crunch each have only one fewer win than Charlotte amazingly enough. Rochester is still among the top teams in the AHL even though as some have expressed, it doesn't 'feel' that way. Watching this multi-talented team struggle so against Binghamton last night is still a mystery. Its good they got the win however, and at this stage of the season, you get them however you can.

they just have to keep at the forefront...the first series is best of 5...meaning there is no room for a night off.
