Great 3rd Period Propels Amerks to Playoffs!

Post by insagt1 » Sat Mar 30, 2019 9:39 pm

We said earlier not to take Binghamton lightly. After a terrible 1st period where Bingo gets two quick power play goals and then Wedge lets in a softie over the shoulder again...Amerks found themselves in a 3-1 hole.

However Amerks kept pounding away at goalie Johnson and finally he too let in a softie as CJ snuck one in from a terrible angle. Still Amerks went into the 3rd period trailing 3-2. They kept pouring the shots on and Smith again found the back of the net with a near impossible angle shot to tie things up.

Then the craziness. Bingo went right down the ice and they thought they had a goal as the shot rang off the crossbar. Play continued but it was clear it was going to be reviewed. But then Elie turned it around and rammed one home to give Amerks a potential 4-3 lead....pending the review of the Bingo shot. Bingo gets that goal and they take the lead and Amerks goal is nullified.

Good news...Bingo didn't get the goal and the Amerks did. Still Bingo wasn't done. IN a scramble with Wedgewood down on his belly in the crease, Bingo fired it home to tie things up 4-4. Looked like it was headed for OT, but Cornel (who has picked up his game in recent days) swatted one in with about 90 seconds to play to give Amerks a 5-4 lead. With Bingo putting on last minute pressure....good old #4...Nathan Paetsch fired one into the empty net to seal the win 6-4. Amerks outshot Bingo 46-20.

with the win, their 43rd, they upped their point total to 92...surpassing last years total and in doing so, they clinched a playoff spot. Syracuse won tonite as well, so Amerks remain 1 point behind them. Crunch will play on Wednesday while Amerks are idle so they will go into the weekend showdown with a game in hand on the Crunch. that game in hand will be made up on the 8th, a Monday. So Crunch could have a real edge if they win Wednesday against Belleville...going into the 2 game showdown 3 points ahead.

Marlies also won tonite but they remain 7 back of the Amerks in 3rd. CJ Smith with a pair of goals now has 27 and a real good shot at 30, with 6 games to play. Cornel with his 9th and Elie with his 8th. Tage got his 3rd and of course Paetsch his first of the year. Cornel, Asplund and Elie all could get to 10 giving Amerks possibly 11 players in double digit goals. We're still waiting for Simpson to get his 20th.

Of interest: Sabres lose again but Olofsson gets the only Sabres goal. And also Over in the NHL, Caps smash TB, preventing them from winning their 60th, as Ovechkin scores his 50th and 51st of the season...his 8th 50 goal season.
