Hershey vs Amerks BCA 10/23

Post by insagt1 » Wed Oct 23, 2019 8:06 am

Leo Roth somehow manages to find time to write all about the Buffalo Sabres but the D&C just can't stomach the thought that the Rochester Amerks are not a high school team, worthy of some note.

Well, a storied rivalry continues tonite at the cavernous, empty, echoing BCA, where the dulcet sounds of loud, blaring music will be bouncing off the walls, drowning out what little noise the few hundred fans might be making when the teams skate out to take the opening faceoff. Maybe the lure of $5.85 Genny Plates might attract a handful more on Wednesdays, but its more likely that this once great competition between the AHL's two oldest continuing franchises (sorry Providence and Springfield) will be witnessed and appreciated by not very many hockey fans.

And of course thats a shame. Amerks have no marketing and today's fans really have no reason to know much about Mike Nykoluk, Andre Gill, Billy Hicke or Rudy Migay. Frank Mathers and Joe Crozier..... They probably don't even remember Tim Tookey or Doug Gibson. Ask them about that incredible playoff series where a full scale brawl broke out before the refs even skated out on the ice. (that game was played in Buffalo). What?
Todays Rochester hockey fan is pretty much only interested in the SAbres...and thats mostly because thats the only team in town that gets any notice.
The small, loyal gang who populates this great site pretty much is all thats left of Rochester Americans history. A few of us here have witnessed all the Amerks Calder Cups. Most are season ticket holders. All still care about this hockey team, which is being slowly relegated to nothing more than a repository for Sabres wanna-bees, just waiting for their turn to travel the Thruway west.

I paint this gloomy picture because, first of all , its true and secondly, its just plain sad to see what has happened to our team in this city. Would I love to enter the arena tonite and see 5,000 fans in the seats? Of COURSE! But if the team stood at the corner of Exchange and Broad and handed out free tickets, you still wouldn't get that many in the house.

but for a couple hours tonite, we diehards can squint and see with our minds eye, a Hershey-Rochester contest of years' past and remember how it used to be. And then it will be gone until next year, when the two AHL stalwarts may play one game again. Or maybe not. Thats just the way it is now, in our AHL wasteland.

Strange feel to tonites game. Announced crowd of about 2,700..might have been that many present...I was thinking more like 2,000, but no matter.
The first period was boring as all get out. 2nd period, Amerks took charge by finally scoring a power play goal. The second goal was pushed in by a Hershey player. The 3rd goal was a very nifty spin around.
Third period was also pretty boring until Amerks poked home another one. All that was left was to protect the shutout. Instead, on the Amerks 6th power play, they gave up a short hander to spoil Johansson's bid for a shutout with under 5 minutes to play. Rochester did get that one back in the final minute to secure a pretty easy 5-1 win. The game didn't have much hitting. And it didn't resemble a typical Amerks-Bears game at all.

However, 5 goals was a season high and a win is a win...Amerks improving to 4-2-1. We didn't win too many games by 4 goals last year, so that is also a plus.

Between the 2nd and 3rd period they played this insanely lame game of 'musical chairs'. As I watched our new PR gal walk off the ice when it was mercifully over, you could practically read her lips: 'please, don't EVER make me do this again'. Memo to our 'entertainment division'....that one didn't work....at all.

Saw a lot of $5.85 plates being consumed. This will probably be a popular Wednesday concession going forward.

Overall, a mostly boring win is head and shoulders better than an exciting loss, so while the small crowd dispersed rather quietly, it was a good evening at the empty hockey barn, Let's keep it rolling.

(anyone know what the current status of Gilmour is these days? )

Gilmour is still with the Sabres & hasn't played a game yet. He would have to clear waivers to be sent to the Amerks. The Sabres will be getting back Dman Montour & Bogosian back soon, so they will have to make a move. They will be over the cap & will have to many player's.

Seems like that was a pretty dumb move by Buffalo to keep him up with no intention to play him while knowing that he might be lost in waivers? That should have been figured out before the season began. If they had him simply for injury insurance, its a real waste of a great talent. Other organizations know about him I'm sure so he probably won't pass waivers. Big loss for the Amerks. (but who cares about us?)

Gilmour played great in the preseason and stood out more than expected as a potential NHL player.

Then, why hasn't he played a game yet? You have to wonder if that was more a curse than a blessing (other than earning the NHL salary...I would think a player wants to play not sit. Sabres will have a glut of d-men soon, so something will have to pop.

When Montour comes back in the next week or so they will have to waive him like it or not. They don't have enough cap space to keep him. And when/if Bogosian returns even worse. At that point I see them trading a D man. They should get rid of Nelson and get a decent forward for us in return.
