My guess would be he will be coaching the NY Islanders
Hey Ted,

I told you Trotz was going to the Islanders.

Sources say Barry Trotz and the New York Islanders are closing in on an agreement for Trotz to be the Isles next head coach.

Per Darren Dreger of TSN:

Sources say Barry Trotz and the New York Islanders are closing in on an agreement for Trotz to be the Isles next head coach.

Since that was probably the only sure opening....you had a lot of choices!

The odds of repeating are pretty slim. You have to have a dominate team like the Pens, Hawks & Kings were for the past 8 years. The Caps were hot, but I don't see them as a strong candidate to repeat. He got his ring, drank his 22 year old Champagne and now wants the cash. Typical of todays league. Player or coach.
Neither the Hawks nor the Kings won 2 Cups in a row, only the Pens in recent years. Detroit in 1997 & 98 was the next team to win back-to-back Cups.

If Trotz was getting $1.5M a year and got a 20% raise for winning the Cup, I don't blame him for quitting. I am sure that a few coaches are getting $3 or 4M a year right now. He probably should be getting $2.5 - 3M a year in the future. If the Caps don't want to pay that, okay. Trotz can go some place else. I am sure that there are a handful of teams that want a SC winning coach to guide their team next year (Isles) or the year after (Seattle).

Trotz signed for 5 years for the Isles and apparently it was more than double what the Caps offered. Guess thats hard to turn down. I also think this deal has been in the works and Barry was just waiting to see what the Caps would offer before saying adieu. Wish him well.

Correct...but you said...no he won't coach the Islanders. I knew all along he was going to the Isles.

I didn't think he would go there. However, it became clear, after the fact, that those negotiations were in the works before the playoffs ended. Trotz had no intention of coming back and apparently the Caps felt that way too or they wouldn't have low-balled his contract extension to the extent they did. I'm not seeing the Isles as a serious team on the rise...but they made him an offer he couldn't and probably shouldn't have refused. He joins Mike Keenan as a Cup winner who left this team due to contract disputes. Scotty Bowman retired after his last Cup win.
