Honeymoon in Western NY Abruptly Ends

Post by insagt1 » Sun Dec 02, 2018 7:04 pm

Its that awful moment when they wake up in the morning and the husband and wife look at each other and go.....uh no, this is no good.

Only a week ago Western NY sports fans were riding a nice wave--the Sabres had won 10 straight; the Bills were on a 2 game win streak; and the Amerks, although hardly redhot, were in 1st place in the AHL North. Ah but the gods of sport looked down and said, 'not so fast Western NY. This was simply a little tease. Reality to follow.

And thud, there it went, like a freight train snashing thru the station. Sabres win streak ended with a tough 5-4 loss in Tampa and then they followed it up the next day with an OT loss in Miami. Suddenly the spectre of a 4 game losing streak is very real, with games against Nashville and Toronto on deck. My how quickly the mood can change.
The Bills had a victory in sight this afternoon in Miami, until reality set in and everyone remembered...these are the Bills you know. Buffalo took some very ill timed, stupid penalties allowing the Dolphins to easily erase the Bills lead on the very next possession. Then a missed field goal and a couple of 'missed by that much' passes and the game was over. Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. Back to normal.

Amerks this weekend looked like a team that hadn't played together all season. This has been building. The hockey in Rochester has been pretty bad for a few weeks now but reality is setting in. This team is in big trouble. The record is pretty meaningless this early. The teams that should be there will soon be there....Syracuse and Toronto. Amerks have more holes to plug than swiss cheese and their indifferent performances lately are, or should be very alarming to both Amerks and SAbres brass. Outside of the goalie this weekend, the entire team was pitiful.

So here we are. Honeymoon was short and sweet and fun while it lasted. But in the cold light of dawn, this is Western NY where sports teams go to die.

Welcome to reality.

I wouldn't get to excited about the Amerks or Sabres yet. Yes, the first month of the season Amerk fans were feeling that we finally had a good team after years of losing, boring, mediocre hockey. Now they are becoming unwatchable again!
The Sabres did win 10 games in a row and that's great if you are a Sabres fan. But I think they won 3 or 4 games out of the 10 in OT and their goal differential is only +9. Tamps's is +24 and Toronto's is +28 in the very completive Atlantic Division of the East
They spent their own dough to get here, and they came here to see us! All right, let's show 'em what we got, guys! Get out there on the ice and let 'em know you're there.

Sports have their ups and downs.

Bills are 4-8. Playoff hopes are pretty much done. But Josh Allen looks good and that gives us hope for the future.

Sabres are way ahead of where most people in Western New York expected them to be. We were thinking that this wouldn't be a Playoff team. Now the Sabres can make the Playoffs if they play .500 Hockey the rest of the way. They really need to go into a funk in order to ruin the good mood in Western New York.

Amerks are reminding me of last year. The record is not bad but they're playing uninspired Hockey.

Also you would want to add University of Buffalo Bulls Football. Had their best record in school history but blew a 20 point lead in the MAC Championship game.

Highs and lows of sport rule the day!
No one expected the Bills to do well. Very few expected the Sabres to be a playoff team this year. So when they 'overachieved' recently...it gave fans perhaps some premature hope!
AS for the Amerks, we have come to expect mediocrity...even last year's 91 point team was not very good, for all those who watched the games. Way too many losses; far too many horrible home game efforts; and finally 3 pathetic playoff games. This year's Amerks might be a good team...but they will have to show a lot more than they have over the past few weeks.

Sounds like Wisconsin. Packers are 4-7-1 and fired their coach of 13 years. Nashville had a flock of injuries and called up 4 Admirals to fill in. Two of them scored their first NHL goals, but Milwaukee went 5-5 and fell from first place to third in their division. They have lost 3 games to Texas, who is the sixth place team, but seems to have their number.

Reality? What a concept!

Is Blackwell hurt again?

Noticed Baptiste isn't doing anything points wise.

Is Blackwell hurt again? Yes, he has only played in 11 games this season.

Noticed Baptiste isn't doing anything points wise. 5 G and 5 A in 28 games.
