Gameday: Crunch visit Amerks, Leggio Changing Positions?

The Rochester Americans finish up their stretch of four games in six nights when they host the Syracuse Crunch at 7:05pm at Blue Cross Arena.  The Amerks are .500 right now at 2-2 and the Crunch are undefeated 2-0.  After losing their first two games of the season being outscored 10-3 the Amerks have won their last two outscoring the opposition 10-3 with seven of those goals this past Sunday.

After the first two losses there was talk that the lack of a quality preseason scheduled played into those losses and depending on how the next few games go that could prove to be true.  The offense looks night and day different in the last two games than the first two games.  The players are connecting passes, they’re finding each other on the ice to make plays and overall seem to know each other a lot better.

One of many players to keep an eye on tonight is Kyle Palmieri of the Syracuse Crunch, a player developed by Amerks Coach Ron Rolston.  Palmieri was the AHL player of the week after scoring four goals and two assists in two games for the Crunch.

Amerks to Televise 11 Home Games on Time Warner

The Amerks announced today that they’ll have 11 home games televised on Time Warner Cable SportsNet, a big difference from every game that’s been televised in recent seasons.  Whether or not having all games on TV helped or hurt the team is a discussion that could go on forever.  The games will be on Channel 26 or HD Channel 1026 in Rochester.  Since games in previous seasons were also broadcast in Buffalo these should be as well.

Below is a schedule of games and more info:

Recap: Amerks First Home Win Had It All, Including Seven Goals

It’s amazing how one solid hockey game can put another one in the past, even if there’s only four games played on the season.  The Rochester Americans on Sunday evening showed what they can be capable of when all of the right pieces fall into place with a 7-2 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins.  There’s still some things to work on (defensive turnovers) but overall it was an exciting night of hockey inside Blue Cross Arena.

Six different players scored goals, 10 players tallied an assist, 15 out of 18 players had at least one shot on net and 52 minutes in penalties were handed out.  This was the type of hockey game that would’ve had the arena off it’s foundation at the home opener. The game also featured fights, questionable hits and a couple instances of blood on the ice.  But it happened tonight and if you weren’t there you missed out.  This is also the type of hockey game that if played like this often will quickly attract fans regularly into the building.

A quick turnaround from the doom and gloom of Thursdays home opener.  There’s every reason to believe that after that poor performance they’ve turned [...]Read More

Video of Corey Tropp’s Hit on Landon Ferraro

Video of Corey Tropp’s Hit on Landon Ferraro

It’s time for everyone to guess the legality of this hit that the Rochester Americans Corey Tropp delivered to Landon Ferraro of the Grand Rapids Griffins.  Mitch Callahan of the Griffins went down the ice on a breakaway and as the play followed behind him you’ll see Tropp and Ferraro meet in front of the goaltender.  Tropp was given an interference penalty and Ferraro appeared to be knocked out.  Ferraro tried to get up onto his skates a few times before staying down and eventually being helped off of the ice.

Was it simply interference, they both met at the same time?  Did Tropp deliver a blind side hit and lead with his shoulder to the head? Questions that the American Hockey League will likely answer come Monday or Tuesday.

Watch and determine for yourself (far away scoreboard video is the best I can do, I don’t have a dedicated camera man covering the whole game, yet):

Zack Kassian and Marcus Foligno Fight Video

During the third period of the Amerks 7-2 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins this fight broke out on the ice.  Foligno was being given a boarding penalty for a hit just before this fight broke out. Marcus Foligno vs Travis Ehrhardt on one side, Zack Kassian vs Garnet Exelby on the other.  Late at getting the camera up and recording and trying to fit both in at once.

Not bad for these two rookies!  They can skate, pass, score goals and dropped the gloves.

That picture of Kassian, is he going for the Beetlejuice or Ogie Oglethorpe look for Halloween?

Enjoy the video and share!

Gameday Thoughts and Lineup: Griffins at Amerks

Gameday Thoughts and Lineup: Griffins at Amerks

The Amerks are coming off of their first win on the season on Friday night when they defeated the Lake Erie Monsters by the score of 3-1.  The team played a better game offensively connecting more passes which resulted in less costly turnovers.

The Griffins and Pirates didn’t play each other at all last season so there’s no real head to head matchup comparison available.

The first two losses of the season were split by David Leggio and Drew MacIntyre, both allowed some questionable goals but neither game would be considered bad.  David Leggio did play a better game on Friday night against and the Lake Erie Monsters and because of that will likely get the start tonight.  The Griffins were the first AHL team that Drew MacIntyre played for from 2004-2006.

If Travis Turnbull can continue to go after the puck and not back down from players he’ll continue improving.  If Derek Whitmore continues with his same effort and energy he’ll continue to put points on the board along with helping Zack Kassian grow.  The key is Mark Voakes playing a leading role as the teams number one center, something he may not be ready for but is being [...]Read More

Portland Winterhawk Fan Praises Riley Boychuk

Portland Winterhawk Fan Praises Riley Boychuk

Rochester American’s winger Riley Boychuck is a rookie that will have a lot of work ahead of him to move up the prospect charts but here’s one Portland Winterhawk (WHL) fan that gives him a lot of praise.

Boychuck is expected to be a gritty winger that isn’t going to be afraid to hit someone.  He should be that player not afraid to dig the puck out of the corner and standing up for his teammates.  Drafted in the 7th round in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft it’ll be interesting to see how he turns out.

He already has a tie to the Buffalo Sabres in winning the Paul Gaustad Fitness Award, has to be worth something!

Read on..

Carbs and all, he’s still physically fitter than thou: In 2011, for the third year in a row, Riley again won the Paul Gaustad Fitness Award. You can read all about it here. The photo that goes with that story is one of my favorites because it’s a good representation of who Riley is off the ice: polite, smart, well-spoken, confident and friendly.

So Rochester, here’s my advice to you: Portland has dispatched to you a gift that may take a bit [...]Read More

Other Blogs Covering AHL Teams

Without anything Rochester Americans related to write about this morning I thought I’d take a minute to share some links to other blogs out in cyberspace covering AHL teams, much like I cover the Amerks here.

We’re all unique in how we cover our teams but all hold one thing in common, being passionate about the teams that we cheer on.  There are independent sites, not associated with any major news papers / media outlets.  I’ll work on a separate list of blogs written by those places.

Here’s what I have in my reading list, if there’s others out there please share!

(in no particular order – if anyone feels like copying and pasting this list for their site go right ahead, just don’t forget to add mine!)

Amerks Score Some Goals and Record Their First Win

Amerks Score Some Goals and Record Their First Win

The Amerks played it simple, score goals to take a lead instead of trying to play catch up and it resulted in their first win of the season.  Once the team had the lead they definitely appeared to play with more confidence than as seen during the first two games of the season.

Greg Mauldin scored at 16:06 of the first period to give the Lake Erie Monsters the 1-0 lead to end the first period.

Michael Ryan scored a goal assisted by Corey Tropp at 5:08 of the 2nd to tie the game 1-1.

TJ Brennan scored the game winning goal on the power play at 16:54 of the second period, assists went to Corey Tropp and Michael Ryan.  Brennan scored the goal going to the net.

Derek Whitmore scored his first goal of the season for the Amerks at 7:38 of the third, assisted by Nick Crawford and Mark Voakes.

Updated: Credit for the goal was changed and given to Zack Kassian, assisted by Derek Whitmore and Nick Crawford.

I wish I could give more details on the goals but missed each of them and the Lake Erie Monsters don’t believe in showing replays of anything.

David Leggio [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks at Monsters, Scoring Will be a Necessity

Gameday: Amerks at Monsters, Scoring Will be a Necessity

The Rochester Americans are about to face off against the Lake Erie Monsters, you can listen to the game live on WHTK 1280AM 107.3FM or whtk.com.  Both teams have lost their first two games and are looking for their first win of the season.  In two losses the Amerks have have tallied an amazing 10 goals against and only scoring three.  The Monsters have had three goals scored against and only one for.

If you’re watching on AHLLive or listening here’s the roster sheet for tonight.

We do know that scratches for the Amerks due to injuries will be Paul Szczechura, Drew Schiestel, Jacob Legace, Maxime Legault and possibly Dennis Persson.  The starting goalie will be up in the air, both Drew MacIntyre and David Leggio will want to make up for their losses.

The key to winning this game is going to be to score some goals.  It’s that simple.  To win you have to score.  The defense will also need to play much better to prevent quality chances from the Monsters.

Who’s going to score these goals?  That’s still anyone’s guess at this time.

The Buffalo Sabres have their home opener tonight so it’s doubtful too many eyes [...]Read More

Amerks Home Opener had Some Awesome and Some Booing

Amerks Home Opener had Some Awesome and Some Booing

The game that was played for 60 minutes on the ice pretty much speaks for itself.  The team was outplayed by a more skilled Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins team.  Going into further detail really won’t accomplish much and does anyone really want to discuss it further?  It’s only two games into the season, there’s absolutely no reason to hit a panic button but there’s reason for concern.  Time to get into the good things before the negative..

The Rochester Americans home opener overall though had a great atmosphere to it.  There were fans in the building early for the current Amerks players to walk the red carpet and then for the alumni to arrive.  Many of the alumni were seen hanging out throughout the game and intermissions with fans chatting.

The Moose and Sabretooth were hanging out signing autographs and taking pictures together.

The new video scoreboard that had a cost of over 200k was impressive (even if it didn’t show any shots on goal).  The video quality was improved and just added to the overall atmosphere.

It was also great running into people that you only see during hockey season and catching up on life.

The home opener had that special [...]Read More

Amerks Gameday Notes, Injuries, Lineup and Attendance

Amerks Gameday Notes, Injuries, Lineup and Attendance

As of writing this there’s about 8,700 tickets sold for tonights game and everyone is aware of the excitement and anticipation for the game tonight.  The players are even aware that it’s their time to shine and prove to fans there’s a reason for them to keep coming back for more after the home opener.

“It’s real important for us to go out and showcase ourselves and showcase that we have a good team and a team worth cheering for,” Derek Whitmore said.  ”Rochester loves a winning hockey teams and they’ll support you, it’s almost like an audition for us to showcase what we have.”

As expected, Drew MacIntyre will be the starting goalie for the Amerks in tonights game.  Once the Penguins finish their morning skate will try and post an update with their goalie as well.

The latest short term injury for the Amerks is defenseman Dennis Persson.  He has a lower body injury from earlier this week in practice and is day to day.

With Persson and Drew Schiestel out of the lineup it gives Joe Finley and Nick Crawford a chance to step in and show they’re just as deserving to be in the lineup.  Matt [...]Read More
