Ted Nolan to coach Team Latvia

Ted Nolan to coach Team Latvia

The news of the morning is that Ted Nolan, former VP of Hockey Operations for the Rochester Americans, has been named head coach of Team Latvia. Once the Amerks were sold to the Buffalo Sabres there were zero plans for him to remain with the Amerks or even within the Sabres organization, some had thought he would have stuck around in some way. That was never going to happen.

Nolan was hired by Curt Styres in July 2009 and he helped work with Jody Gage to bring in players that summer, including Mike York who he had coached with the New York Islanders.  Nolan arrived in Rochester with a hand shake agreement to work with the team.

From the IIHF web site:

Nolan, a First Nation Canadian who grew up in a reserve near Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, was coaching the Buffalo Sabres and the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League. He won the Jack Adams Award as NHL Coach of the Year in 1997. In the last two years he has been working for the AHL’s Rochester Americans as Vice-President of Hockey Operations.

Rochester Americans Sign Forward Maxime Legault

Rochester Americans Sign Forward Maxime Legault

Maxime Legault was signed by the Rochester Americans on Tuesday to help fill out the roster.  He’s not the puck feeding high scoring center needed but he’ll likely have a spot on the roster.  Solid player, still better than what we’ve had the past three seasons in this role.

In case anyone is wondering, he’s not a player that’s expected to earn a call up to Buffalo any time during the season which is why he signed an American Hockey League contract.  NHL teams are limited to having 50 players signed to contracts so this makes sure he’s not taking up one of those precious spots.

Here’s the official press release:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 2, 2011

ROCHESTER AMERICANS SIGN MAXIME LEGAULT TO AHL CONTRACT

(ROCHESTER, NY)… Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier announced today the Rochester Americans have signed forward Maxime Legault to an American Hockey League (AHL) contract.

Legault, 22, recorded 24 points (12+12) and 83 penalty minutes in 67 games for the Portland Pirates of the AHL last season. He also collected two points (1+1) in nine Calder Cup Playoff games. A native of Ste. Agathe, Quebec, Legault was selected by the Sabres in the seventh [...]Read More

Drew MacIntyre: What you Need to Know about Our New Goaltender

Drew MacIntyre: What you Need to Know about Our New Goaltender

Good writeup this morning over at Buffalo Sabres Nation about new Rochester Americans goalie Drew MacIntyre.  He’s always been tough for the Amerks to play against, will be great to have him in an Amerks uniform and on our side.

In MacIntyre, the Sabres have a goalie who has been patiently waiting for an opportunity to prove he can be an NHL backup. He’s a very well-rounded goaltender in terms of technique and skill, has plenty of confidence and is mentally composed. He’s a 28-year-old veteran with plenty of miles logged and a lot of experience, so expect a steady performer that knows what it takes to play in a consistent manner.

The Sabres University Philosophy is Winning

The Sabres University Philosophy is Winning

The Buffalo Sabres officially introduced Ron Rolston as the new head coach of the Rochester Americans, a new employee at the Sabres University.  There’s a lot to write about following the press conference and I’ll try and get to as much as possible today.  One thing that continues to be apparent is that this philosophy is something that everyone is believing and buying into.

The word “development” is something that scares a lot of long time fans of American Hockey League teams because it speaks more to learning than anything else.  The difference here is in one sentence that Darcy Regier said at this mornings press conference, “The Sabres University more than anything else represents winning championships.”

“That winning process begins with the selection of the players and progresses with the development of those players,” Regier said. “There is no more important area that we recognize more than the development of the players.”

Yes, that scary word development was used again.  The difference here though is that this new philosophy is all about winning. That’s not something that was apparent the last three seasons with that other NHL parent team we had here in Rochester (and even in years prior with another [...]Read More

Amerks Season Ticket Sales Lead the American Hockey League

Amerks Season Ticket Sales Lead the American Hockey League

When the Buffalo Sabres announced that they had bought the Rochester Americans one of the things they announced was that all season tickets were going to be $10 only for any ticket in the building.  Sounds like that’s paying off in numbers.

Ted Black stated today at the press conference that the Amerks have already exceeded last seasons number of season tickets by 20%.  He also said that the Amerks lead the American Hockey League in new FULL season ticket holder sales.  To get to these numbers they’ve been averaging about 100 new sales a week.

An exciting team from day one on the ice playing exciting hockey should lead to consistent crowds this city hasn’t seen in the past decade.  The buzz about Amerks hockey continues to build.

If we make it to every game in the first season I wonder if we’ll make the “Pegula List” for perfect attendance?  Do we graduate and get a diploma if the team gets a Calder Cup?  Silly questions.. sounds like a silly promotion too!

New Amerks Coach, Ron Rolston

The “Twitterverse” news spread quick this afternoon from a tweet by @CapCareyWDT stating that Ron Rolston will be named the new Head Coach of the Rochester Americans.  Cap Carey is a sportswriter for the Watertown (NY) Daily Times, primarily covering Clarkson Men’s Hockey.

No one else has been able to confirm this news at this time, no reason to not believe Cap Carey at this time though.

Updated 7/26: This is confirmed. Again, was no reason to doubt Cap Carey, just pointing out this has been confirmed.

As the head coach of the Under-18 USA Hockey Natonal Team Development Program he would fit the role of what the Buffalo Sabres are looking to continute doing, developing young players.

From Wikipedia:

Ron Rolston (born October 14, 1966 in Fenton, Michigan) is an Americanice hockeycoach. He is the head coach of the Under-18 team at the USA Hockey National Team Development Program. In June 2008, he was named head coach of the American team at the 2009 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. He [...]Read More

Hockey’s Future Sabres 2011 Draft Review

Hockey’s Future Sabres 2011 Draft Review

Hockey’s Future does a pretty good job of evaluating prospects and what’s expected of them as they begin their professional careers.  Any die hard has probably disagreed with their assessment at one time or another but overall they’re a great place to start when learning about a player. Most of these players we’ll see in a Rochester Americans jersey in the years ahead so it’s never too early to learn about our future as well.

Hockey’s Future wrote:

By taking Finn Joel Armia in the first round, the Sabres ended a four season streak of only picking North Americans in the draft. In addition they addressed the biggest hole in their depth chart by selecting three centers out of the six picks they had in 2011. Defensive-defenseman and Buffalo product Alex Lepkowski represents the only rearguard selected by the Sabres and WHL Championship MVP Nathan Lieuwen was the first goalie selected by the club since 2009.

Regier Addresses Rochester Americans Goaltending and Scoring

Regier Addresses Rochester Americans Goaltending and Scoring

Since it was made official that the Buffalo Sabres had bought the Rochester Americans and the roster was analyzed the need for scoring was pointed as a weak spot in the lineup for Rochester.  After discussing the signing of Jhonas Enroth, Darcy Regier talked to the media and as usual Rochester was brought up and he was asked if he still wanted to add more players.

Darcy Regier responded with, ”We’re still looking to add some scoring in Rochester, we’ve got quite a bit of depth there. I think if we can add some scoring that’s probably the focal point.”

Discussing the goaltending Regier said, “Both MacIntyre, obviously is an elite goaltender at the American League level. David Leggio came in from Finland last year, he’s a local talen and was outstanding backing up Jhonas and took over for Jhonas when Jhonas was here (in Buffalo). I think that’s as good of a one two punch in the American Hockey League that exists.”

Craig Charron Memorial Celebrity Bartending Fundraiser at Murphy’s Law

Don’t let the $50 price tag scare you away, the Craig Charron Celebrity Bartending Fundraiser was a great time according to those who went last year.. and the money raised is for a great reason, obviously.

Sabres Sign Matt Ellis to a Two Year Contract

Catching up on yesterdays news, the Buffalo Sabres have signed Matt Ellis to a two year contract.  Ellis will likely be the captain of the Rochester Americans and provide the leadership on the team, like he did with the Portland Pirates.  The first year of the deal is two ways in 2011/2012 and a one way contract in 2012/2013.  No word on the dollar amount right now.

Darcy Regier had said recently that the door was open for Ellis to return and it’s great to see they were able to agree on a deal.  Up until this point Ellis was likely testing the waters out there to see if he could land a better NHL only deal.

Here’s his career stats per hockeydb.com:

Amerks 2011-2012 Roster as of July 19th

As the summer goes on I’ll keep updating the Rochester Americans expected lineup as players are signed to contracts.  Many speculate that Ales Kotalik and Shaone Morrisonn will be sent down to Rochester to hide their salaries but until that happens they’ll be kept off of this lineup.  This roster still has a need for some more scoring but it’s slowly coming along. The one thing the lineup should have with this group is a physical style of play which is a good thing.
