Amerks Win Seventh Game this Season vs Crunch

December 16, 2009 - By

The second period may have been one of the worst this season for the Amerks but they were able to hold on and after 60 minutes left the ice with a win and two more points in the standings.

It was the seventh win this season for the Amerks against the cross state rival Syracuse Crunch.  The only element missing from the game was the typical chirping, cheap shots, and fights between the two teams.

Mike Duco opened the scoring for the Amerks at 6:52 of the first period.  Jordan Henry had just gotten out of the box and fed a pass to Jamie Johnson who brought the puck across the blue line.  Johnson was stopped in his tracks by a Crunch player, passed the puck to Duco who let a shot go through some legs and beat Dan Taylor five hole.

Brady Calla scored his first goal of the season (pictured) and it was also the game winning goal.  It was the type of goal that’s been talked about with players stepping up and contributing.  Jimmy Bonneau did a great job getting Calla the puck to score.

Nick Tarnasky led the Amerks with two goals [...]Read More

Amerks Chased Down by Bears, Lose 6-2

December 13, 2009 - By

The complete team won on Saturday night and that team was the Hershey Bears.  The game ended with the Bears winning 6-2 which goes along with the Amerks motto this season of losing big if they’re going to lose.

I did not watch the game so I can’t offer too much, but from what I was told it was an obvious case of they have their full team and we have a shell of a team.  That’s not making an excuse, it’s what is happening.  We just have to hope the Panthers get healthy soon or this shell of a team puts something together.

Video highlights below….

Other than the loss the biggest news out of the game was that Graham Mink did not play after his second shift of the game.

He told PennLive.com the following:

“I couldn’t move after that,” Mink said. “Hopefully, it’s minor and I can be back soon.

“Very disappointed. Obviously, this isn’t the result that we wanted as a team. Personally, I really wanted to play. I love playing against friends of mine.”

He says that it’s minor and not a big deal, but no one will really know until he wakes up tomorrow.  [...]Read More

Dylan Hunter Brings Bad Karma; Amerks Lose 2-1

December 12, 2009 - By

The headline sounds like one I would have written two seasons ago during one of the worst seasons the Amerks have ever played.  The game we witnessed tonight resembled one of those games more than it did the Rochester Americans of the 2009/10 season.  I don’t really blame Dylan Hunter and don’t really think that he brought bad karma, but it makes for a good headline.

I don’t get the sense that Amerks fans are hitting the panic button yet, but signs of frustration are part of every conversation and for good reason.  The Panthers called up Michal Repik after the game which leaves the team short another player.  This is a shell of a team we saw a month ago.

They gave a good effort but fell short.

“I thought we were a second behind,” is what Benoit Groulx said after the game.  I think that line sums it up perfectly.  That’s all it takes to decide any sporting event, sometimes even less than a second.  That’s what happens when you go from a team that was playing four consistent lines to playing two.

The game was only decided by one goal but an early [...]Read More

Amerks End Road Trip With a 2-1 Win; Injury Updates

December 7, 2009 - By

It wasn’t pretty but the game was full of effort and the Amerks were able to end their six game road trip with a 2-1 win over the Abbotsford Heat.  They end the road trip with three wins and three losses, respectable based on the circumstances.

The game was scoreless until 7:27 of the third period when Brett Sutter put a wrist shot past Ryan Mior from the face off circle.  Sutter had the breakaway and was able to get the shot off before Keaton Ellerby was able to get in front of him.

Ville Koistinen answered back at 11:04 of the third working hard going to the net to get one past Leland Irving to tie the game 1-1.

Michal Repik scored the game winner at 14:48 thanks to a big mistake by John Negrin of the Heat in front of the net.  Shawn Matthias made the initial pass to Repik who put a shot on net.  The rebound stayed in front of the net and Negrin put the puck right on Repiks stick and he was able to put it in the net.

Ryan Mior made 30 saves and played an impressive game.  It’ll [...]Read More

Amerks Depleted Lineup Leads to 6-2 Road Loss

December 5, 2009 - By

If you’re going to lose you may as well lose big.  That seems to be the motto of the Rochester Americans this season.  They lose by the final score of 6-2 on Saturday night on the road against the Abbotsford Heat.

Shawn Matthias scored first for the Amerks on a great breakaway and was able to sneak a shot through the pads of Matt Keatley.  The only other Amerks goal was scored by Keaton Ellerby with less than seven minutes left.

That ends the highlights for Rochester.

Chris Beckford-Tseu stopped 33 of 39 shots.  A few of the early goals were because he was not able to sit on the puck hard enough.  It either passed through his pads or the Heat continued jamming at it and got it through.  Hopefully it was his last game ever in an Amerks uniform.

They were outplayed in every way.  The Heat outshot the Amerks 39-24.  They scored three goals on five power play opportunities.  They skated faster.  The controlled the puck more.  They played a tighter defense.  The list could go on.  The Amerks just could not get any real offensive attack going.

As bad as the game [...]Read More

Two Goals for Rome Leads Moose to 2-1 Win Over Amerks

December 3, 2009 - By

Photo by Travis Golby at MooseHockey.com

The Rochester Americans wrapped up their fourth game of a season long six game road trip by losing to the Manitoba Moose by the final score of 2-1.  With the loss the Amerks dropped to 18-4-1-0 for the season and 2-2-0-0 on the road trip.  That’s right, only their 4th loss out of 23 games.  This was the first time the Amerks have lost when they’ve scored the first goal of the game.

It only took Graham Mink a total of 26 seconds to score the only goal for the Amerks.  Mink took the puck towards the net and was able to just barely get his stick on the puck and slid it through the legs of Cory Schneider.

This was Ryan Mior’s first regular season professional game and he played well, he certainly kept the Amerks in the game.  Mior made 22 saves in the game, including a penalty shot by Dan Sexton.  Sexton went with a back hand shot but Mior was able to get a small piece of the puck and deflected it high over the net.

Mior and Amerks coach Benoit Groulx know each other [...]Read More

Amerks Win 4-1 on the Road in Manitoba

December 1, 2009 - By

“We are happy the third period worked pretty well for us today,” is what Alexander Salak said on the Moose post game show.  That was the key to the Amerks 18th win of the season on Tuesday against the Manitoba Moose.  The final score was 4-1 with goals scored by Repik, Mink, Garrison, and Dadonov.

It’s interesting to note that last season at this point the Amerks were 3-18-1, now they are 18-3-1.  Very impressive turnaround.

I often find it interesting to find a defining moment in a game and tonight I think there was two of those.  The first was the Amerks doing a great job killing off a four minute high sticking call to Brady Calla.  The second was the Evgeny Dadonov goal at 14:53 of the third period to give the Amerks the 4-1 lead.  A strong third period and a three goal lead is what the Amerks need to make sure to do every game to be able to hold on to win.

Alexander Salak was outstanding in goal again but will be leaving the team in the morning.

In the post game radio show Benoit Groulx talked about what they needed [...]Read More

Weekend Recap and Plante vs Spencer Video

November 30, 2009 - By

Rochester Americans goalie Tyler Plante became involved in a rare goalie fight on Saturday night vs Tim Spencer of the Binghamton Senators.  If you watch at the beginning of the clip you’ll see Tim Spencer try and take a run at Clay Wilson on the back boards.  As Spencer skated past the left hand side of the net you’ll see Plantes’ stick oh so gently hang loose and hit Spencer as he skated by.  Whether or not he intentionally tried to give Spencer a butt end is up for debate.

(weekend recap in links is below the video)

Apparently Plante shared a few words after Spencer had completely missed Wilson along the back boards.  You can barely see Spencer turn and skate towards Plante as the play comes down the ice.  Clay Wilson should have found a way to jump in and help his goalie.  Jimmy Bonneau was quick into the mix and whether or not he was on the ice at the time or part of a “line change” is something that will probably be reviewed by the league.

I’d say Plante stood up for himself pretty well against known tough guy Tim Spencer.

Crunch Talk Trash, Salak Has the Last Laugh

November 29, 2009 - By

Alexander Salak picked up his 14th win of the season Sunday afternoon in Syracuse and in doing so he made some new friends.  I’m sure there are a lot of goalies that are vocal, Martin Biron being the most popular, but Alexander Salak is making a name for himself with every game that he plays.

Below is a recap of an incident that happened during the game along with the Crunch trash talking to the media about the Amerks.  The Amerks ultimately have the last laugh.  They’ve won all six games against the Crunch this season outscoring them 26-12.  Four of those 12 goals were scored in Sundays game.

Bates Battaglia tipped a shot at 10:10 of the second period on a power play that was a disputed goal.  Referee Jean Hebert waived it off as no goal but the goal judge flicked on the light indicating that it was.

Alexander Salak says that the puck went from post to post never crossing the goal line.

The play went on and as it ended Hebert reviewed the call with the goal judge and indicated that yes it was a goal.  That was the first goal of [...]Read More

Amerks Coast Again, Third Period Collapse Leads to Loss

November 28, 2009 - By

Tyler Plante tried to set the tone early in the game Saturday night by telling Tim Spencer of the Binghamton Senators that no one is allowed in his crease.  Only four minutes into the game as Spencer skated through part of the crease Plante gave him a nice shove and next thing we know they’re trading punches.  The game was Plantes first since October 21st against the Binghamton Senators when he hurt his knee after being run into multiple times.

He sent the message that it’s his crease, his home, and he does not need anyone else to stick up for him.

Unfortunately Jimmy Bonneau got thrown out of the game for being the third man in as he jumped in to help out Plante, even though it wasn’t needed.

**** UPDATE: All I had to go on was the replays shown, but apparently more happened.  Earlier in the play as Spencer skated by close to the net he caught the butt end of Plantes stick.  Spencer also took a run at an Amerks player but missed completely which led to Plante making some wise cracks (which he’s well known for).  That’s when things broke loose.  [...]Read More

Amerks Coast to a 4-3 Win Over the Baby Pens

November 27, 2009 - By

The Amerks had a repeat performance Friday night of a game against Syracuse, they played to not lose instead of playing to win.

“It was a good first and we coasted after that,” Benoit Groulx said in his short 45 second press conference.

Its easy to tell when Groulx is not happy versus when he is to put it bluntly pissed off.

The thoughts of the players in the locker room was that they know they coasted. They held back. They were saving themselves thinking of the stretch ahead.

A dangerous mindset to have but luckily they have Alexander Salak in net to keep them in the game.

But hey, they won the game. They picked up two more points. This was their fourth win in a row. The team also has not lost in regulation this season when scoring first.

It was also the biggest crowd in the Styres era even if the numbers appear off (meaning it seemed like a lot more).

And did you see the play Andrew Sweetland made to setup Jordan Henrys game winning goal? Awesome!

Sorry about the short post game writeup, decided to head out after the game instead [...]Read More

Amerks Overpowered the Dogs in the Third to Win 5-2

November 24, 2009 - By

The Rochester Americans won their 15th game of the season and third in a row defeating the Hamilton Bulldogs by the final score of 5-2.  I think that’s it is safe to say that this Amerks team is for real.  It is still early in the season with only 18 games played but the way this team is playing no one can call them a fluke any longer.

It was a good game by both teams through two periods of play before the Amerks stepped up their game to light up the scoreboard by overpowering the Bulldogs in the third.  Goals scored by Graham Mink, Andrew Sweetland, David Brine, and Jeff Taffe all in the third period secured the win for the Amerks.

This is the recipe that has led the Amerks to success this season.  The mix of scoring from vets and returning players is a lethal mix.  Toss in superb goaltending from Alexander Salak every game and there’s reason to stay excited.

The Amerks killed off three penalties in the first period in what was a back and forth period.  Some great scoring chances by each team but solid defense and goaltending kept the [...]Read More
