Big Joe Finley, Strong on Defense, Can Also Throw Lawn Mowers and Attack Mascots

Big Joe Finley, Strong on Defense, Can Also Throw Lawn Mowers and Attack Mascots

The big news out of the Buffalo Sabres on Monday is that they have signed defenseman Joe Finley to a three year two way contract making an NHL salary of $525,000.  He came to training camp on a tryout and has now signed a National Hockey League contract with the Buffalo Sabres.  A pretty good story for a guy determined to prove he still has a career ahead of him.

Finley was drafted 27th overall in the first round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.  If you were to just look at his stats you might think he’s a first round bust but he’s far from that.  Two other former Amerks were drafted in the first round of the 2005 draft, Marek Zagrapan by the Buffalo Sabres and Kenndal McArdle by the Florida Panthers.

At 6’8″ tall Finley plays a strong defensive game, is very dependable, rarely gets caught out of position and is successful at keeping the front of the net cleared.  Because of his size he has a very long reach and on top of that is one of the best skaters on the team.  He’s a shut down defenseman whose game has excelled since being paired with Shaone [...]Read More

Tropp, Szczechura and Brennan Back to the Amerks

Tropp, Szczechura and Brennan Back to the Amerks

Some good news today for the Rochester Americans as Corey Tropp, TJ Brennan and Paul Szczechura were all sent back by the Buffalo Sabres.  The Amerks play against the Houston Aero’s and can use all the talent available.  The Aero’s have only lost three games in regulation, two in overtime and four in a shootout.

The players were sent back today since the Sabres expect Patrick Kaleta, Tyler Ennis and Robin Regehr back into the lineup.  This leaves Brayden McNabb, Zack Kassian and Drew MacIntyre still up with the Buffalo Sabres.

Minus one game back, Corey Tropp has missed nine games with the Amerks since being called up at the beginning of the month.  Brennan has missed three games and Szczechura only missed this past Saturdays game.

Paul Szczechura Called Up to Buffalo

Paul Szczechura Called Up to Buffalo

The Sabres University should be renamed the Sabres Infirmary (stole it from you Ted) considering how many injuries they’ve encountered so early in the season.  Paul Szczechura is the most recent Rochester Americans player to be called up to the Buffalo Sabres.  As of writing this no word yet on who he’ll be replacing in the lineup.

Szczechura is the only center on the Amerks roster that’s capable of playing in the NHL at this point so he has to be going up to play center and someone else moving to wing.  He’ll join Brayden McNabb who was called last night to head to Buffalo to fill in for an injured Robyn Regehr.

This leaves the Amerks roster without Szczechura, McNabb, Brennan, Kassian, Tropp and MacIntyre.  The Florida Panthers didn’t even encounter this many injuries in such a short amount of time when they were the affiliate of the Amerks.

The Vegas betting lines are now open to place odd’s on who’ll get injured during tonights Sabres game against the Washington Capitals.

Meanwhile here in Rochester the Amerks will be trying to win their first game of the season against the Hamilton Bulldogs.  Given the way the team has [...]Read More

Amerks Team Effort Leads to Win Over the Devils

Amerks Team Effort Leads to Win Over the Devils

Heading into the game on Friday night there were low expectations due to the fact that the Amerks had lost another forward to a call up, that player being Zack Kassian.  That meant the Amerks would be without him, TJ Brennan, Corey Tropp and Drew MacIntyre.  The Amerks are still without forwards Travis Turnbull, Michael Ryan and Jonathan Parker who have not returned from injuries.  The results of the game though was unexpected with the Amerks winning 4-2 thanks to a solid team effort.

The Amerks had called Riley Boychuck back up from the Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL and also signed Evan Rankin to a tryout contract from the Toledo Walleye to help add some extra warm bodies to the bench due to the lack of players.

Shaone Morrisonn, Jacob Lagace, Colin Stuart and Derek Whitmore all scored for the Amerks.  Three players out of those four who scored are exactly the players you’d hope to have scoring during times like this when the roster is a shell of what it’s supposed to be.

Morrisonn was in perfect position near the front of the net to put in a rebound.  Lagace scored on a breakaway thanks to a great [...]Read More

Rookie Brayden McNabb Up Next for Sabres

Rookie Brayden McNabb Up Next for Sabres

Another Buffalo Sabres game and another injury for the Sabres, this time Robyn Regehr left the game with an “upper body” injury.  So that means another call up from the Rochester Americans, this time it’s Brayden McNabb who get’s the call to join the team.  The rookie has played in all 19 games this season for the Amerks and has a goal and nine assists.

McNabb will now join Zack Kassian, TJ Brennan, Corey Tropp and Drew MacIntyre from the 2011/2012 Amerks roster up in Buffalo.  McNabb had a smile on his face when asked if anyone got the call and he said it was him.

During the first period of Friday night’s game, McNabb dropped Eric Boulton of the Devils to the ice with a solid hit in front of the Amerks bench.  Boulton wasn’t seen the rest of the game after that.  The New Jersey Devils had sent Boulton down for conditioning, welcome back to the minors!

Looking at other possible call up’s for defense, Shaone Morrisonn would have to go through re-entry waivers and would be too much of a cap hit on the Sabres if another team claimed him.  Drew Schiestel seemed like the next pick but [...]Read More

Mid Week Amerks Report: Weekend Games, Injuries, Call Ups, etc

Mid Week Amerks Report: Weekend Games, Injuries, Call Ups, etc

There hasn’t been any breaking news out of the Rochester Americans but with the business of Thanksgiving wanted to take time to catch up on everything going on.  Besides a few Twitter updates I doubt there’ll be another post until after the game on Friday.

Even though most of us will be getting a day off from on Thursday the Amerks will not be as they have practice on Thursday morning.  The last I had heard was that a bunch of the players would be getting together for their own dinner, there may be a story about that in the Democrat and Chronicle.

The Amerks have two home games this weekend, Friday night against the Albany Devils and on Saturday against the Hamilton Bulldogs.

This’ll be the first of four games against the Devils this season.  The Devils will have former Rochester American Eric Boulton in the lineup, he was sent down by the New Jersey Devils for conditioning.  The Devils also have Rochester native Stephen Gionta in the lineup, younger brother of Brian.  The Devils are 7-1-1-1 over their past 10 games and have won their past six straight.

The Amerks need to get their first win of the season on Saturday against the [...]Read More

TJ Brennan Back With the Amerks

TJ Brennan Back With the Amerks

TJ Brennan was sent back to the Rochester Americans after being called up by the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday to be available on the road if there were any more injuries, he didn’t play.  He’s back with the team and playing today in Toronto.

Mike Weber is said to be out for “weeks” with an injury which means there’ll probably be more call ups by the Sabres in the “weeks” ahead so that the team has an extra defenseman when on the road or if the Amerks will be anywhere not within a close driving distance.

The Amerks have an abundance of defensemen so this shouldn’t be too much of an issue.  Ron Rolston had made it clear from the start of the season they’d carry extra’s for reasons just like this.

Game two of the home and home for the Amerks and Marlies is set to start any minute.  The Marlies beat the Amerks last night 2-1 thanks to a short handed goal late in the third period.

Amerks Gameday vs Marlies, A Handful of Thoughts

Amerks Gameday vs Marlies, A Handful of Thoughts

It’s a Friday and the Rochester Americans are back in action with two big games this weekend against the Toronto Marlies, the only other team in the North Division that appears to be ready to compete with the Amerks for the top spot.  The puck drops at 7:35pm but get there at 6:30pm for “Happy Hour” with $2 beers.

It’s still too early in the season to be staring at the standings but it’s better to do it now than trying to squeeze out every point possible in March.  The Amerks have a game in hand on the Marlies and are two points ahead of them in the standings.

When it comes to games in the division the Amerks have earned points in seven of their eight divisional games. After losing the first game of the season against the Hamilton Bulldogs they have earned two wins against Grand Rapids and one against Lake Erie.  They have lost two games in overtime/shootout against Hamilton and they have one overtime loss in Toronto.

The season started out rocky and the five game losing streak now appears to have been a good thing because the team was able to take something away from [...]Read More

Drew MacIntyre Called Up to the Sabres; Amerks in Buffalo

Drew MacIntyre Called Up to the Sabres; Amerks in Buffalo

Unless you’ve been locked up and unplugged from the internet, radio or TV you’ve probably already heard by now that the Buffalo Sabres are reporting that Ryan Miller has a concussion and they’ve called up Drew MacIntyre from the Amerks.

MacIntyre had a solid weekend in Rochester saving 78 out of 80 shots faced.  His stats make him look like he’s had a horrible start to the season but he hasn’t been bad and has improved as time has gone on.  It’s doubtful he’ll see any action in Buffalo but he’ll be ready if needed.

This will give David Leggio a chance to now play consecutive games in a row with MacIntyre on the road.  The Amerks don’t have another three in three weekend until the first weekend of December so they should be alright.  Leggio has played about the same as MacIntyre and there’s no reason to doubt he’ll be able to step in and be the lead goaltender.

The Amerks are practicing in Buffalo late Monday morning to get a tour of the Buffalo facilities and also meet with the training staff there as well.  They’re going to make sure the boys are in shape and not eating [...]Read More

A Few Hours Away From Amerks vs Griffins

A Few Hours Away From Amerks vs Griffins

It seems weird to have back to back home games on a Friday and Saturday night but it’s happening this weekend, following the Amerks 3-1 win over the Senators on Friday night they’re back on the ice in a few hours against the Grand Rapids Griffins.  Based on Ticketmaster numbers it looks like a crowd of around 4,000 should be expected.  If you don’t have tickets yet make sure to wear Amerks or Sabres gear to the box office to get discounts.

The Amerks lit up the scoreboard with a 7-2 win the last time these two teams played in the middle of October.  The Griffins scored eight goals last night against the Hamilton Bulldogs so they’ll be ready to shoot some pucks.

Whether or not it’ll be David Leggio or Drew MacIntyre in net for the Amerks is an unknown at this time, we’ll likely find out when the team skates out for warmups.  The rotation has Leggio in net but MacIntyre had a great game last night, maybe it’s the weekend the rotation ends.

Travis Turnbull is an unknown after he left the game after a hit by Tim Conboy (see it here) late in the second period on [...]Read More

Sabres Recall Corey Tropp

Sabres Recall Corey Tropp

We have our first call up of the season.  Corey Tropp has been rewarded for his consistent play in the first 10 games of the season for the Amerks with a call up to the Buffalo Sabres.  The Sabres needed the extra body thanks to Patrick Kaleta’s headbutt that resulted in a four game suspension (Shanaban video here of the hit).  He should fit in well on that line with the way he plays.

The Amerks are already in Binghamton for their game on Friday night, it’ll be interesting to see if they told him about this before he drove down or if he’s renting a car to drive back this way.

Corey Tropp Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier announced today that forward Corey Tropp has been recalled from the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League.

Tropp (6’0”, 195 lbs., 7/25/89) will join the Sabres on his first career recall. He spent the 2010-11 season in Portland, posting 40 points (10+30) in his first professional season. In 10 games with Rochester this season, Tropp has seven points (4+3), tying for [...]Read More

Gameday: Collapse in Toronto; Amerks Back Home vs Adirondack

Gameday: Collapse in Toronto; Amerks Back Home vs Adirondack

A wonderful Sunday evening game ahead of us, the third game in three nights for the Rochester Americans and Adirondack Phantoms.  The Amerks had a third period collapse on Saturday afternoon that resulted in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Toronto Marlies.  It’s a game that the team knows inside they they squandered but at the same time they’re already focusing on the game today.

The Phantoms were in Portland on Friday where they won 3-0 and then lost 5-2 in Albany on Saturday night.

Marcus Foligno will be back on the ice after serving his two game suspension.  Chris Clackson was sent back to the Gwinnett Gladiators after filling in on the roster.

It’ll be interesting to see what this young team looks like on the ice today.  Sunday games in the AHL are typically snoozefests between tired teams.  The Amerks didn’t play into Saturday night so other than fatigue from the game they were able to get a good nights sleep in their own homes.

They worked hard to come from behind on Friday night before losing in the skills competition (shootout) and then the late game collapse yesterday so they should be fired up and ready to [...]Read More
