Talking with Joe Crozier at the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony with Video

Joe Crozier is turning 83 years old and hockey is still an every day part of his life and when he was called and told he was being inducted to the American Hockey League Hall of Fame he said, “It was like winning another Calder Cup.”  It’s almost impossible to put into words how amazing it is talking to someone like him about the sport.  Anyone who says that “hockey is just a game” and thinks people are crazy for devoting time to it is an indication that they aren’t around the sport very much.  It’s an every day part of life for a lot of people.  It’s so much more than the 60 minutes played during a game.  Hockey is the best sport on the planet (I’m biased of course).

(keep reading for video of the ceremony as well as the speech that Rich Crozier gave for his dad)

Joe is still very much in tune with what’s going on with the hockey community.  He follows the Sabres and Amerks closely.  ”The Amerks aren’t too far behind Toronto,” he said.  He’s always watching the NHL Network.  He always has tapes and dvd’s around as well.  There’s no reason he [...]Read More

Corey Tropp Sent Down; AHL Replay in Preliminary Stages

Corey Tropp Sent Down; AHL Replay in Preliminary Stages

The news from Monday was that the Buffalo Sabres sent Corey Tropp back to the Amerks now that he’s recovered from a concussion.  Unless you’ve been following the Sabres you’ve probably forgotten about Tropp as an Amerks forward.  He’s only played in 12 out of 33 games for the Amerks this season with 10 of those in October.  In those 12 games Tropp scored four goals, had three assists and 19 penalty minutes.  He also played a game in November and December.  I was in Buffalo when Tropp scored his first NHL goal and you can read about that here.  Tropp wears #14 with the Amerks (or at least did) and his return to the Amerks assumes that the Sabres will stay healthy.

Another bit of information came out yesterday from Bridgeport where it has been confirmed that The AHL is going to be testing out a replay system at four Bridgeport Sound Tigers games this season.  This may come as a surprise for some who don’t follow the American Hockey League too closely.  It’s one of the few professional leagues left in the world that has not had any type of replay system.  The league has said that [...]Read More

Top 11 Articles on Lets Go Amerks from 2011

It was a busy second half of 2011 for this site with acquiring a bigger audience with the sale of the Rochester Americans to the Buffalo Sabres.  Here’s a quick look back at what was popular over the past year (more like 6 months, I didn’t write much last season).

AHL Playoff Format for 2010-2011 Season ) - The most popular post was about the American Hockey League playoff format for the 2010/2011 season.  The information had spread pretty quickly which generated hits but it’s now old.  Here’s the format that changed completely for the 2011/2012 season, so here’s a link to that ( AHL Alignment and Playoff Format for 2011-2012 Season ).

Drew MacIntyre’s Lid Features Care Bears and Potato Heads ) – Everyone enjoys the story behind a goalies helmet and what it means to them, no surprise that MacIntyre’s has been a popular topic of conversation.  It’s a simple design with meaning behind it.

Big Joe Finley, Strong on Defense, Can Also Throw Lawn Mowers and Attack Mascots ) - Joe Finley has made quite the impression since being an invite to the Sabres training camp, earning an NHL contract and then getting his first call up.  Here’s a little back story on [...]Read More

Official AHL 2011-2012 Rule Book

Now that the American Hockey League season has started it’ll be time to take a look at the rule book.  One addition is Rule 48 which deals with illegal checks to the head, copied below.  For those just starting to watch AHL hockey, there is no instant replay at all.  The main reason being that American Hockey League buildings are not equipped and the costs associated with getting it going.  In many games the AHL does have two ref’s and two linesmen, majority of games you’ll only see one referee.

Here’s Rule 48 and the link to the whole rule book is at the bottom.

Rule 48 – Illegal Check to the Head
48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact is not permitted. However, in determining whether such a hit should have been permitted, the circumstances of the hit, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit or the head contact on an otherwise legal body check was unavoidable, can be considered.

AHL Rule Changes for Tie Breakers, Playoffs and Headshots

Springfield, MA – (From TheAHL.com) The American Hockey League’s Board of Governors approved several measures at its Semi-Annual Meeting, held today in downtown Springfield.

The format for the 2011 Calder Cup Playoffs has been approved and will not change from last season, featuring a divisional playoff format leading to conference finals and ultimately the Calder Cup Finals. All rounds will comprise best-of-seven series.

The Calder Cup Playoffs will feature the top four teams in each of the AHL’s four divisions, with two possible exceptions: if the fifth-place team in the East Division finishes with more points than the fourth-place team in the Atlantic Division, it would cross over and compete in the Atlantic Division playoffs. Similarly, if the fifth-place team in the West Division finishes with more points than the fourth-place team in the North Division, it would cross over and compete in the North Division playoffs.

The AHL Board of Governors approved an amendment to the tiebreaking procedures for AHL standings. In case of a tie in points in the standings, the first tiebreaker shall be the team having won the greater number of games excluding games won in the shootout.

Modifications were made to the AHL Rule [...]Read More

April 13, 2010 - By

Take a few minutes and enter the Calder Cup Challenge prior to 7pm on Wednesday to win some prizes from The AHL.  Long story short, pick the players who you think will score the most points.  A fantasy hockey team.  The one amusing part is seeing Daneil Steiner listed in the list of Defenseman #2 but Clay Wilson is not anywhere to be found.

Here’s all the details:

The American Hockey League has launched the 2010 Calder Cup Challenge, a free on-line contest offering AHL fans the opportunity to test their postseason knowledge and win exciting prizes.  Contest entries must be received prior to the start of the first game of the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs on Wednesday at 7:00 PM ET.

Click here to enter the contest.

Registration is underway now at theahl.com. Participants will select a total of 10 players from among the 16 teams in the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs, and accumulate points in the contest as their players rack up goals, assists, wins and shutouts.

Contestants will also be asked to answer bonus questions (e.g., “How many overtime games will there be this postseason?”) to receive additional points.

Alexander Salak Named AHL Player of the Week

October 26, 2009 - By

The American Hockey League announced on Monday that Rochester Americans goaltender Alexander Salak has been named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 25, 2009.  Salak made three starts in a 48-hour span over the weekend and won them all, stopping 88 of 91 shots for a 0.98 goals-against average and a .967 save percentage.

On Friday night, Salak turned aside 32 of 33 shots and was named the game’s first star in Rochester’s 2-1 victory at Albany. On Saturday, he finished with 22 saves as the Americans rallied for a 3-2 overtime win in Syracuse. And on Sunday evening, Salak was again selected as the number-one star of the game as he stopped all 34 Syracuse shots for his first career AHL shutout, a 3-0 decision over the Crunch.

In recognition of his achievement, Salak will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Americans home game.

Salak is now 5-0-0 with a 1.60 goals-against average and a .947 save percentage in six appearances for Rochester, helping the Amerks to a seven-game winning streak and an 8-1-1-0 record overall, good for first place in the North Division. The [...]Read More

Hockey players wear sweaters, not jerseys

October 18, 2009 - By

I read this about a month ago and it means more now than ever.  It’s easy to just write the word jersey when talking about a teams uniform but it’s a lot more than that, it’s a sweater.

This years Rochester Americans team is playing for that sweater, they’re playing for the logo, they’re playing for this city.  They aren’t playing for anyone else.  They aren’t playing for the team that originally drafted them.  They’re playing for what it means to be a Rochester American.

I originally found this article on Kuklas Korner, take a few minutes to read…

from Don Barrie at the Peterborough Examiner,

The Petes unveiled their new hockey sweaters last Thursday. The new design and material are part of a move the OHL and the CHA are taking to tap into the endorsement money for sweater exclusivity as their NHL counterparts.

Unfortunately many of the reports and the Petes’ actual press release referred to the new hockey apparel as a jersey, not the sweater that it is.

Here in Canada there are three accepted definitions for “jersey” according to my Funk and Wagnall Dictionary.

Jersey is a breed of a top [...]Read More

Goalie Tyler Plante Talks Veteran Presence

1
September 26, 2009 - By

The key to success for teams in the American Hockey League is to have a veteran presence on a roster of players in their young 20′s who have more or less moved away from home for the first time.

Players need a peer that they can talk to in the locker room, someone they can relate to.  It’s easier to talk to and listen to a peer than to a coach who knows the game but may not know what you’re going through.

The lack of a veteran presence is something that has been missing from the Amerks roster in recent years and it has showed in the league standings.

I asked goaltender Tyler Plante what’s different this year and he said, “You can already feel a vet presence in the room, its a welcome change.   It’s a little more serious of an attitude already and you can feel it.”

Emmerson, Dadonov, and other AHL News

September 3, 2009 - By

The Amerks are expected to release their training camp roster within a week, so until that happens we’re short on Amerks news but plenty of news from other places.

** Evgeni or Evgeny (depending on the day of the week it seems) Dadonov has officially signed his entry level contract with the Florida Panthers and it was accepted by the NHL.  He hasn’t played a game yet for the organization but he’s been in the news more than anyone else.

** Riley Emmerson signed a contract with the Springfield Falcons, affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers.  He improved throughout last season and earned plenty of ice time for an enforcer.  He never backed down from a challenge and always put up a good fight.  There’s pleny of videos of Emmersons fights in the video section of this site.  The Oilers signed Steve MacIntrye last season off of waivers from the Panthers/Amerks and this season they’ve taken someone else.  The Amerks had not shown any interest in Emmerson.

** 29 Teams in 29 Days is a series that Chris Rahn (a writer for Inside Hockey) just started over on his site about American Hockey League news.  He has [...]Read More

Amerks Summer News Stories, Getting Caught Up

August 12, 2009 - By

It has been a busy summer for the Rochester Americans with a lot of great news and a couple of stories that have generated some bad press.  Looking at the bigger picture it has been a positive summer.  Here’s the start of “round up” type posts I’ll be doing once the season gets started.  There’s always a lot of news but not always enough to make an individual post for.  They’re also a great way for people to get caught up that may not read this site or the news all that often.

Here’s what has happened so far this summer:

** Training camp for the Amerks has not even been announced yet but the doesn’t mean some Amerks aren’t back on the ice already.  The Rochester Americans Summer Hockey Camps are underway at ESL being led by Amerks assistant coach Jason Cipolla.  It’s great to see so many kids sporting the Amerks logo playing hockey, a sign that the season is close.

** Matt Duffy is still an unsigned draft pick of the Florida Panthers.  He was drafted in the fourth round and #104 overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.  When his season ended with the University of [...]Read More
