Looking back at the first 20% of the Season

November 17, 2008 - By

The Amerks loss to the Hamilton Bulldogs on Sunday evening ended the first 20% of the season.  The team has won two games, at this pace they’ll win eight more through the rest of the season.

So, anyone have anything positive to look back on?

While the Amerks have only won two games and are in the basement, some other teams are in similar positions.  The Albany River Rats, Manchester Monarchs have each won three games, and the San Antonio Rampage have only won two as well.

Unless you haven’t been following the team, they’re basically last in every stats category.  If you want more stats, check out theahl.com and amerks.com, talking about them in detail is pointless.

The one thing that has been positive is that the players on the team are working hard.  Even though the team is in the basement statistically, they haven’t quit the season (yet).

They have lost confidence at times during some games, but they’ve continued to put forth an effort.

They’re a young team put into a bad situation.  During the 07/08 season the Amerks team was one that seemed to stop caring completely and rarely put in a solid effort.

Gameday 11-10-2008: Another Shot At the Moose

November 10, 2008 - By

Karl Stewart is out on the ice taking some shots today.  Not game ready though…he is in his warmup pants.  I expect him to be ready for Friday’s game.  But, that’s just me.

Jack Birch is here watching the team.  I sure hope he doesn’t think because we played one good game on Saturday that we are fine and just need more time to work on our problems.  Come on Jack…it’s overhaul time.  Instead of watching practice, why don’t you get on the phone and make some calls right now.  Everyone’s agents are working by 10 a.m.

Riley Emmerson continues to impress me with his work ethic.  You can tell he doesn’t just want to sit there and be a goon.  He is working hard to get himself onto the 4th line and get some ice time.  We saw him getting more ice time on Saturday and he didn’t screw up royally.  We asked Benoit Groulx about Emmerson getting more ice time, of course he stated the obvious that it depends how the game itself is going.  ”His role is to have a presence, but as he improves his skating and continues to check more he’ll earn chances [...]Read More

Amerks New Head Coach is Benoit Groulx

August 21, 2008 - By

First reported by TSN, the new coach of the Rochester Americans is going to be Benoit Groulx (pronounded Groo, the L and X are silent, I believe).  We appear to have been thrown a curve ball at our meeting with Steve Donner when he said it’d be someone not yet mentioned, or unexpected.  This is a great coaching choice, and he must see some chances at winning for him to have left his current position.

Here’s the report from the National Post

Benoit Groulx is reportedly out as head coach of the Canadian world junior hockey team.

The 40-year-old has accepted a job to take over as head coach of the American Hockey League’s Rochester Americans, meaning he won’t be available to the junior team when it takes to the ice this December in Ottawa for the IIHF world junior hockey championship.

TSN reported Wednesday night that Groulx will not be behind the bench for Canada when it attempts to win a fifth straight tournament.

Groulx will replace Randy Cunneyworth as coach in Rochester. Cunneyworth accepted a job as assistant coach of the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers last month. Rochester finished [...]Read More
