Amerks Lose in Overtime to the Rampage, 10th Loss by One Goal

There’s almost always more than one way to look at a game, especially a loss.  You can look at it as being a close game and getting a point on the road is acceptable or you can start to pull your hair out due to frustration at the apparent downhill slide.  The Amerks have now lost 10 games by one goal.  You could even push that number to 11 since Albany scored an empty net goal on December 4th to win 4-2 so that’s more like a one goal loss than anything else.

One thing that didn’t help the Amerks was that Colin Stuart was called up to the Buffalo Sabres on Friday morning due to Patrick Kaleta not being able to play.  They had thought Kaleta would play so everyone went on the road trip.  It’ll be interesting to see what kind of flights Stuart had to take to get from San Antonio to Buffalo.

This Rochester Americans team is having to rely on defense and goaltending and unfortunately a defensive turnover by Drew Schiestel is what led to a Bill Thomas breakaway to score the game winner in overtime.  There’s very little offense being generated and the only [...]Read More

Amerks Weekend in Texas, Week in Review

Amerks Weekend in Texas, Week in Review

The Amerks are on a long road trip to Texas and will be looking for a big weekend full of wins to put this last three in three behind them and gain some ground in the standings.  They’ll play the Rampage on Friday, Stars on Saturday and Aero’s on Sunday.  All three games are must win but the game against the Rampage (the current Florida Panthers affiliate) has some more meaning for obvious reasons. More on that below.

They started out well last weekend with a 3-0 win over the Albany Devils but went on to lose two games by only one goal, one against the Phantoms and the other the Bulldogs.  Paying attention to details is something the team talked about after the great win on Friday night but they lost focus of that the next two nights which resulted in two losses.  Evan Rankin had two goals against Adirondack which gave them a 2-1 lead before eventually losing in overtime.  A four minute high sticking penalty by Drew Schiestel gave the Phantoms the power play in overtime which was the deciding factor.  The next night against Hamilton the final score was 2-1 which meant it was a close [...]Read More

Bits of News on Carl Hudson, TJ Fast and Bill Thomas

September 28, 2010 - By

The Amerks finished day two ofn training camp with some drills and what Chuck Weber called a controlled scrimmage.  Its still impossible to really predict how the team will do but one thing is very different and that’s the way training camp and practices seem to be run.

(More on practices below info about Thomas, Fast and Hudson)

Bill Thomas was one of the first players signed by the Panthers when free agency started and while he had one great season with the San Antonio Rampage he hasn’t had a year like that since.  He was impressive in camp this morning with his speed and handling of the puck while playing as a center.

“He’s a veteran guy that has played both center and wing, with the injury to Cullen we’re trying him out there at center,” Chuck Weber said about Bill Thomas.  “Ideally he’s going to play right wing but in a pinch we can play him at center.”

Weber is looking for Thomas to be a veteran presence and use his size to get up and down the wing, bang some bodies and create some space that will create scoring opportunities.

Another player that looked impressive today was [...]Read More

Tyler Plante, Bill Thomas and Triston Grant Sent to Amerks

September 27, 2010 - By

The Florida Panthers reduced their training camp roster by two more players today by putting Triston Grant and Bill Thomas on waivers.  Assuming they clear waivers, which they will, they’ll be assigned to the Rochester Americans.  Tyler Plante was also sent back to the Amerks, not sure if he had to officially go on waivers or not..  Grant is a physical player who also has a scoring touch.  Bill Thomas from what I’m told is a great two way player who could have some scoring capabilities.

Tyler Plante made three outstanding saves in last Thursdays preseason game against the Bruins.  If Plante can stay injury free and also keep the bullseye off of his back from being hit he should have a career season.

Triston Grant and Bill Thomas Signed for the Amerks

On the second day of free agency the Florida Panthers signed Triston Grant and Bill Thomas for the Rochester Americans.  When most people heard of the news today in Rochester they replied with, “who?”  Both players may turn out to be decent, expectations were just a little bit higher though for the second day of free agency.

Bill Thomas is a right winger that is four games short of being considered a veteran player.  He’s considered a decent player but also streaky.  His best season in the AHL was 2007/08 with the San Antonio Rampage when he scored 24 goals and had 28 assists in 75 games.  In a combined 72 games the past two seasons with the WB/S Penguins and Springfield Falcons he had a combined 13 goals and 22 assists.

Here’s more on Triston Grant from Kevin O:

He’s a gritty, gutsy left winger who has some skill, can definitely skate and isn’t afraid to fight anyone. This past season with the Milwaukee Admirals he scored 12 goals, assisted on 13 and also piled up his customary 200-ish penalty minutes (236). He has averaged 192 minutes for his five-year AHL career with the Philadelphia Phantoms and Admirals.
