Corey Tropp Sent Down; AHL Replay in Preliminary Stages

The news from Monday was that the Buffalo Sabres sent Corey Tropp back to the Amerks now that he’s recovered from a concussion. Unless you’ve been following the Sabres you’ve probably forgotten about Tropp as an Amerks forward. He’s only played in 12 out of 33 games for the Amerks this season with 10 of those in October. In those 12 games Tropp scored four goals, had three assists and 19 penalty minutes. He also played a game in November and December. I was in Buffalo when Tropp scored his first NHL goal and you can read about that here. Tropp wears #14 with the Amerks (or at least did) and his return to the Amerks assumes that the Sabres will stay healthy.

Another bit of information came out yesterday from Bridgeport where it has been confirmed that The AHL is going to be testing out a replay system at four Bridgeport Sound Tigers games this season. The Hockey News Ranks Amerks to be 4th in the West

The Hockey News has published it’s preview of the American Hockey League’s 2011/2012 season and the Rochester Americans are ranked 4th in the West and based on those predictions would win the North Division. The rankings were put together by the D&C’s Kevin Oklobzija.

Thanks to Admirals Roundtable for the rankings. Looking back at the 2010/2011 rankings Ryan from Admirals Roundtable wrote this:

- The Calder Cup finalists were ranked 16th and 27th overall.
- The division winners were ranked 19th, 3rd, 14th, and 18th.
- Four of their top 10 didn’t make the playoffs (Chicago, Worcester, San Antonio, Grand Rapids)

It’s that time of year where everyone makes predictions just because it’s the thing to do. Everyone knows (or should know) that a season can change in a matter of weeks due to injuries, call ups, trades and even a group of players not living up to their expectations.

A Rare Monday Hockey Night in Rochester

Tonights game is simple, the Amerks need to win. That’s it. No other outcome will be acceptable.

There’s been talks about the team not having had a full week of practice together. The fact that Taffe, Repik, and Duco were late to joining the team. That may have been the case for some sloppy play even though they won on Friday night, but there’s no excuses anymore. This team was built to win. Built to score some goals. They need to find a way to do those things.

Unfortunately what we’ve seen is a team that has been slow and afraid to play physical at times. The only players that have played a consistent physical game have been Graham Mink, Kenndal McArdle, and Jordan Henry.

The Amerks have one win, one loss, and one overtime loss. They’re better than last season already but shouldn’t we be expecting more?

I’ll remind myself now that it’s only going to be the 4th game of the season… the company line is that it takes time for a team to find it’s identity and build chemistry. My take on it is that these guys are not rookies, they should be able to adjust.

Trevor Gillies Signs with Bridgeport

The Amerks were hit with a surprise left this afternoon when they learned that Trevor Gillies had signed with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. As of this morning they said they were negotiating with Gillies and thought things were going well. I guess Gillies didn’t see it that way.

The team had hoped to have a real heavyweight heading into opening night and for the second season in a row that hope has come crashing down at the last minute. Last year Steve MacIntyre was claimed off of waivers by the Edmonton Oilers just before the deadline.

Jimmy Bonneau was signed to a PTO contract on Friday morning so the team will have someone in the lineup that can patrol the ice and fight. James DeLory is still with the team as well and he’s hoping to get the chance to prove himself.

It’d be interesting if they called Mike Sgroi back in to give him another look.

Amerks Jersey Ranked 2nd by The Hockey News

The Hockey News ranked jerseys last year based on the teams logo, this year they decided to go by patches, striping, and piping to rank the jerseys. I also need to mention colors as well.

The Amerks were ranked second for a “Classic crest with a clean look to it.” I’m not quite sure how the Milwaukee Admirals got the top spot. In a typically boring month for hockey news this is what we get.

American Hockey League Teams on Twitter

As the 2009/2010 season approaches it appears as if the American Hockey League is finally represented within the Twitter universe.

Twitter is a great service for sports fans due to the fact that news can usually be summed up in less than 140 characters leaving out all of the extra fluff that accompanies articles.

If you’re new to Twitter I’m going to list some ways to effectively use the site and follow teams, if you’re just looking for the list of teams scroll down.

By following LetsGoAmerks (and other teams) on Twitter you’ll be able to get live updates about the Rochester Americans with scores, injuries, transactions (call ups and players being signed), game day lineups, media appearances, and much more. If you scan through the updates I’ve posted I think you’ll notice it’s a all great info. Also taking a moment to brag, LetsGoAmerks offers the best coverage of any AHL team on Twitter.
