Amerks from Last Season Not Returning

The Rochester Americans have announced the 2010-2011 training camp roster which brings in a whole group of new faces and names that we’ll get to know.  That also means a number of players that were on last years team are not returning.  There’s always a lot of changes over the summer with American Hockey League teams and almost impossible for most to keep up with everything.  So, in case you missed anything over the summer here’s a list of players not returning and where they are now.

Rory Fitzpatrick – Retired
Jamie Johnson – Grand Rapids Griffins
Mike York – Finland
Graham Mink – Peoria Rivermen. He was traded to the St Louis Blues in exchange for T.J. Fast.  With the money the Panthers saved by trading Mink they immediately signed Joe Callahan.
Jeff Taffe – Traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Marty Reasoner
Mathieu Roy – Signed 2way deal with Tampa Bay Lightning
Maxime Gratchev – Hartford Wolf Pack
Jordan Henry – KHL
Jimmy Bonneau – Hamilton Bulldogs
Chris Beckford-Tseu – unknown
Alexander Salak – loaned to Farjestad of the Swedish Elite League. With Vokoun and [...]Read More

Jack Birch No Longer Works for the Florida Panthers

June 25, 2010 - By

Updated July 2nd… Birch’s contract expired June 30th and was not renewed.

As I’m reading up on the NHL Draft and the changes on the horizon for the Florida Panthers, one thing I noticed was that Jack Birch’s name is no longer listed as a member of the Florida Panthers staff. I used the term fired in the subject because that’s a little more catchy, but it could just be that His contract expired and was not renewed.

I was given the idea to look when I read on George Richard’s blog that Dale Tallon was going to be working on hiring a new director of player personnel.  Chances are no one outside of Rochester really cares all that much or would even notice the guy was gone.

Prior to being named as Director of Player personnel for the Panthers, he was involved in the scouting department for the team.

When Birch was given the position which was essentially the general manager of the Amerks, it was thought that he would bring some good decisions.  Turned out to be the opposite.  The only great move he pulled off was finding Mike Brodeur and getting him signed [...]Read More

Contract Status for Amerks Players Heading into Next Season

April 29, 2010 - By

Now that the season is over for the Rochester Americans it’s time to take a look and see who is still under contract with the Panthers or Amerks, who is and who is not still likely to sign.  I grouped players by signed, likely to sign and RFA and UFA.  Under each category I put some guesses about the status of the players.

Currently Under Contract for 10/11:

Coaches: Benoit Groulx and Jason Cipolla

Goalies: Alexander Salak, Marc Cheverie

Defense: Michael Caruso, Keaton Ellerby, Adam Comrie, James DeLory

Forwards: Evgeny Dadonov, Michal Repik, Brady Calla, Graham Mink, Chris Taylor, Shawn Matthias, Victor Oreskovich, Eric Selleck, AJ Jenks

One Way: Clay Wilson and Jeff Taffe are signed but to one way contracts with the Florida Panthers.  If they don’t fit into their plans it’s still possible the Panthers will try and have them clear waivers to be sent to the Amerks.

***** Shawn Matthias has probably played his last game in the AHL and should be able to earn a job with the Panthers going forward.  Keaton Ellerby will be trying to earn a job as well but he has some work ahead.  It’s amazing that James DeLory is still under [...]Read More

Panthers Call Up Repik, Matthias, Calla and Beckford-Tseu

February 24, 2010 - By

The Florida Panthers are returning to practice today to prepare for their first game following the Olympic break and in order to do that they needed some players.

Bad news for the Amerks. Probably gone for the weekend and near future the Amerks have lost Michal Repik and Shawn Matthias. For some help on offense the Amerks may want to play Daniel Steiner but in order to do that they’ll have to sit Rory Fitzpatrick.

Chris Beckford-Tseu was also called up from the Florida Everblades to be a second goalie in practice. That’s horrible news for the Everblades since they are now without a goalie for their game on Friday. I’m assuming they’ll send him back to play this weekend.

Brady Calla was also called up to the Panthers to help fill their roster prior to the Olympic break. He has not been playing for the ‘Blades because technically he has been earning a paycheck with the Panthers.

That’s all for now, expect some exciting changes to the site in the next week or so!

Amerks Lost Second in a Row on New Years Eve

January 1, 2010 - By

The Amerks lost their second in a row on New Years Eve against the Lake Erie Monsters.  I was on my way out of town and barely caught any of the action so the Amerks press release is below recapping the game..  They’re back in action on Saturday night on the road against the W-B/S Penguins.  The live chat will start around 7pm.

(Rochester, NY)… The Rochester Americans ushered in the start of 2010 on the losing end this evening, dropping a 5-1 decision in a New Year’s Eve matinee to the Lake Erie Monsters at Quicken Loans Arena. The loss was Rochester’s second straight on its current three-game road trip as the Amerks fell to 22-12-2-0. With the win, the last-place Monsters improve to 14-18-0-3.

Second-year forward Michal Repik netted Rochester’s lone goal as goaltender Chris Beckford-Tseu posted 28 saves in the losing effort.

Lake Erie’s Darren Haydar, Brian Willsie and Marty Sertich each scored a goal and assist for the hometown Monsters who have now won five of their last six. T.J. Hensick assisted on two goals and fifth-year pro Tyler Weiman garnered his 12th win of the season with a 14-save effort between [...]Read More

Salak Hurt; Bulldogs Move to First Place with OT Win

December 21, 2009 - By

The Amerks took the Hamilton Bulldogs to overtime but in the end the Bulldogs were the ones that scored and won the game to take two points away.  The game had it’s ups and downs and twists and turns.  I think the game took us on an emotional roller coaster ride.

Heading into the game the Amerks and Bulldogs were tied with 41 points each, with the win the Bulldogs take over position of first place.  Based on the celebration on the ice and the cheering and excitement in the Bulldogs locker room it’s obvious they enjoyed the win.

The biggest news of the game was that Alexander Salak went down injured at 9:28 of the first period after Benoit Pouliot scored the first goal of the game.  He left the game with a shoulder injury and did not return.  The extent of his injury will be known more on Monday after he visits the doctor, but considering the fact he left the game in pain I expect he’ll miss some games.

Jamie Johnson talked about the injuries saying, “It just seems to keep coming if it’s up top or down here, someone within the organization [...]Read More

Late Comeback Not Enough, Bears Win 5-4

December 20, 2009 - By

The one positive out of Saturday nights game on the road against the Hershey Bears is that it was a better game than the previous two.  Evgeny Dadonov, Chris Taylor, Jamie Johnson, and Daniel Steiner all had two point games.  In the end the Bears were able to take advantage of a weak defense and scored a few easy goals.

There was no scoring in the first period and it was a pretty even period with the Amerks having more scoring chances.

Jimmy Bonneau and Grant McNeill dropped the gloves at 2:57 of the third period and put on a good fight.  Both players got a few good punches in.  I’d give the edge to Bonneau since a couple of his punchs appeared to buckle McNeills knees.

For the second game in a row the Amerks followed up a fight with a goal.  Evgeny Dadonov scored his fourth goal of the season at 3:26 of the second picking a top corner off a great pass by Chris Taylor from the high slot.

It only took Bears Captain Bryan Helmer a measly 38 seconds to score unassisted and tie the game 1-1.  Oskar Osala followed up nine [...]Read More

Chris Beckford-Tseu Taking a Trip to FLA and Back

December 16, 2009 - By

Chris Beckford-Tseu 12-15-2009 PracticeYou can probably file this one under the category of not really important in any way… but Chris Beckford-Tseu packed his bags after tonights game to fly to Florida and play one game for the Everblades and then return on Thursday.

It’s entirely possible we’ll see Beckford-Tseu get a start this weekend for the Amerks so it’ll help him to get a game in.

The Amerks have a home and away series with the Hershey Bears on Friday and Saturday and then return home to play the Hamilton Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon.

He was stopping pucks during practice on Tuesday morning and played a decent game on Hershey last Saturday.  The confidence in him still is not very high, but I’m still hoping for miracles.

Amerks Chased Down by Bears, Lose 6-2

December 13, 2009 - By

The complete team won on Saturday night and that team was the Hershey Bears.  The game ended with the Bears winning 6-2 which goes along with the Amerks motto this season of losing big if they’re going to lose.

I did not watch the game so I can’t offer too much, but from what I was told it was an obvious case of they have their full team and we have a shell of a team.  That’s not making an excuse, it’s what is happening.  We just have to hope the Panthers get healthy soon or this shell of a team puts something together.

Video highlights below….

Other than the loss the biggest news out of the game was that Graham Mink did not play after his second shift of the game.

He told PennLive.com the following:

“I couldn’t move after that,” Mink said. “Hopefully, it’s minor and I can be back soon.

“Very disappointed. Obviously, this isn’t the result that we wanted as a team. Personally, I really wanted to play. I love playing against friends of mine.”

He says that it’s minor and not a big deal, but no one will really know until he wakes up tomorrow.  [...]Read More

Amerks Send Mior, Duffy, and King Elsewhere

December 8, 2009 - By

With the completion of the long road trip the Amerks announced some roster changes on Tuesday.

Goaltender Ryan Mior was released from his PTO and he’ll return to the Dayton Gems of the IHL.  Mior played well in his two games with the Amerks and I expect he’ll be kept on speed dial if he’s needed.  Mior played in two games for the Amerks.  He made 30 saves in the teams 2-1 win on Sunday night in Abbotsford.  He also played last Wednesday in the teams 2-1 loss in Manitoba where he made 22 saves.

Colt King was on loan and returned to Rapid City.  In the two games he played for the Amerks in Abbotsford he did not really make any kind of impression.  He deserves a break though considering the distance traveled and not getting a chance to really practice with the team.  He was signed to a two way deal so we can expect to see him back at some point this season.  He was not the power forward providing toughness that was expected, but then again the games he played in were not very physical.

Matt Duffy was reassigned to the Florida [...]Read More

Amerks End Road Trip With a 2-1 Win; Injury Updates

December 7, 2009 - By

It wasn’t pretty but the game was full of effort and the Amerks were able to end their six game road trip with a 2-1 win over the Abbotsford Heat.  They end the road trip with three wins and three losses, respectable based on the circumstances.

The game was scoreless until 7:27 of the third period when Brett Sutter put a wrist shot past Ryan Mior from the face off circle.  Sutter had the breakaway and was able to get the shot off before Keaton Ellerby was able to get in front of him.

Ville Koistinen answered back at 11:04 of the third working hard going to the net to get one past Leland Irving to tie the game 1-1.

Michal Repik scored the game winner at 14:48 thanks to a big mistake by John Negrin of the Heat in front of the net.  Shawn Matthias made the initial pass to Repik who put a shot on net.  The rebound stayed in front of the net and Negrin put the puck right on Repiks stick and he was able to put it in the net.

Ryan Mior made 30 saves and played an impressive game.  It’ll [...]Read More

Amerks Depleted Lineup Leads to 6-2 Road Loss

December 5, 2009 - By

If you’re going to lose you may as well lose big.  That seems to be the motto of the Rochester Americans this season.  They lose by the final score of 6-2 on Saturday night on the road against the Abbotsford Heat.

Shawn Matthias scored first for the Amerks on a great breakaway and was able to sneak a shot through the pads of Matt Keatley.  The only other Amerks goal was scored by Keaton Ellerby with less than seven minutes left.

That ends the highlights for Rochester.

Chris Beckford-Tseu stopped 33 of 39 shots.  A few of the early goals were because he was not able to sit on the puck hard enough.  It either passed through his pads or the Heat continued jamming at it and got it through.  Hopefully it was his last game ever in an Amerks uniform.

They were outplayed in every way.  The Heat outshot the Amerks 39-24.  They scored three goals on five power play opportunities.  They skated faster.  The controlled the puck more.  They played a tighter defense.  The list could go on.  The Amerks just could not get any real offensive attack going.

As bad as the game [...]Read More
