Varone and Leggio Lead Amerks to 3-2 Win Over B-Sens

Sounds like the game came down to the final moments on Saturday night when the Amerks defeated the defending Calder Cup Champion Binghamton Senators.  I was not able to see or listen to the game so here’s the press release below…

VARONE, LEGGIO POWER AMERKS TO 3-2 WIN OVER B-SENS

(Rochester, NY)… Rochester Americans rookie forward Phil Varone scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, and David Leggio made a season-high 44 saves to power the Amerks to a 3-2 win over the defending Calder Cup champion Binghamton Senators tonight at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The win improves Rochester (15-13-4-2) to 3-1-0-0 this season against the B-Sens as it has now collected points in six of its last seven games.

The two-goal effort was the first multi-goal game for Varone, who also extended his point streak to six games. The game also featured the return of forward Zack Kassian and defenseman T.J. Brennan, who were reassigned to Rochester earlier this morning. Kassian made an immediate impact in his first game back in the lineup, assisting on Varone’s first goal of the game and finishing with a +1 rating.

Gameday: Amerks on the Road in Binghamton

Gameday: Amerks on the Road in Binghamton

The Amerks are on the road tonight in Binghamton looking to kill their four game winless streak against the reigning Calder Cup Champions.  Even though the Amerks are on a losing streak they’ve managed to earn points in three out of four of those games.  After tonights game the Amerks will be back home to practice and then go back again to Binghamton next Friday.

Looking at the positives, the Amerks know they’re missing a couple of key players that could make a difference in the roster but they continue to stay competitive in games and are finding ways to score.  Players like Michael Ryan and Paul Szczechura out of the lineup are forcing others to move up in roles that they are not be ready for.  Things are headed in the right direction, they’re not being embarrassed on the ice night in and night out.

The Amerks coaching staff see’s positive signs with what they have and will continue to coach to that.  Rolston immediately said no when asked if there have been any talks with the Buffalo Sabres to make changes to the roster to improve it.  They understand the veteran element is missing that could help lead [...]Read More

More Top Free Agent Signings in The AHL

July 7, 2010 - By

It appears as if the going rate for the top free agents around The AHL is a two year two way deal with an NHL team.  I’ll hold off for now on making assumptions about why there have not been mor signings for the Amerks.

Defenseman Dan Jancevski along with forwards Tim Stapleton and Mike Glumac are still available and two players that could fit in with the Amerks.  One of these days there’ll be some news about Rochester and not just everyone else.

Here’s the players signed so far today:

Forward Kyle Greentree and defenseman Brian Fahey signed to play for the Hershey Bears.

Corey Lockey signed with the Ottawa Senators, will likely end up in Binghamton which is a team that needs all the help they can get.

Andrew Hutchinson signed for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.  In an instant he gave a huge boost to the blue line for the Penguins.  Watch for them to be serious contenders again this season.

As always, stay tuned to twitter.com/LetsGoAmerks for the latest updates and discussion!

Top AHL Free Agents Still Available, Where Others Signed

Top AHL Free Agents Still Available, Where Others Signed

Some of the top AHL free agents like Giroux, Minard, Sterling, Johnson and Stafford have all signed somewhere but there’s still a number of players still available.  Monday will probably be a busy one after a quiet weekend and hopefully some of the top free agents left will be signed by the Florida Panthers for the Rochester Americans.

We know that Mike Santos and Jody Gage have been working together, looking forward to hearing about some completed deals.  The one thing that most players are still looking for is the chance to earn a call up to the NHL, unfortunately that’s something the Panthers may not be willing to offer as quickly as some other teams.  Hopefully that does not get in the way of things and some contracts get signed.

Here’s a look at some potential free agents still available and how they’d fit into the Amerks roster followed by where the top players have already signed.

The Amerks are in need of a top line center to replace the scoring that Jamie Johnson provided.  The best option for him would be Corey Locke, a player that helped lead the Bulldogs to the Calder Cup in 2007.  Some people [...]Read More

Live From the AHL All-Star Game; Amerks Brodeur Starting

January 26, 2009 - By

It’s night number two of the AHL All-Star Classic event and time for the actual game.  Mike Brodeur of the Rochester Americans is getting the start in goal for Team Canada.  Brian Elliott of the Binghamton Senators was slated to get the start but when the Ottawa Senators called him up the starting position shifted to Brodeur.

Mike Brodeur said, “someone must have just flipped a coin or something,” regarding him getting the starting job.  Mike is very humble and unsure of himself in the role that he has earned.  The most exciting part of being the starter for Brodeur isn’t about the honor that goes with it, but rather not having to sit on the bench for two hours prior to being able to play.

The game is being broadcast to over 100 million people, and tonight the world gets to see the player that has turned the season around for the Rochester Americans.  All-Star games are all about offense, so he’s going to be put to the test early.  When we talked about the lack of defense and him really being put to the test some of the defensemen in the locker room started laughing.

The theme of [...]Read More

When Was the Last Time The Amerks…

December 9, 2008 - By

Here’s some “fun facts” I guess you could call them about the last time certain things were achieved by or against the Rochester Americans.  A few items that stick out more than others: The last Amerk to get a hat-trick at Blue Cross arena was Stefan Meyer on December 16, 2006, nearly two years ago.  Scott McCrory was the last Amerk to score four goals in one game over 18 years ago on November 3, 1990.  It’s been less than a year since an opposing player has scored four goals against us.

One item I’ll add of my own: The Amerks have not been shutout yet this season!

Amerks had a shutout:

  • Home: Mike Brodeur vs Albany River Rats, 12/07/08 (game #24), 4-0
  • Away: Adam Dennis @ Toronto, 2/2/08 (game #51), 3-0

Amerks were shutout:

  • Home: Karl Goehring, Syracuse, 4/11/08 (game #78), 0-4
  • Away: Dan LaCosta @ Syracuse, 3/14/08 (game #365), 0-3

Amerks win in overtime:

  • Home: vs Albany, 2/20/08, (game #58), 2-1 (Anthony Stewart)
  • Away: @ Lake Erie, 3/20/08, (game #67), 5-4 (David Brine)

Amerks lose in overtime:

  • Home:vs Toronto, 2/1/08, (game #50), 2-3 (Jeremy Williams)
  • Away: @Binghamton, 3/15/08, (game [...]Read More
