Cory Schneider Defeats Amerks in Shootout

March 19, 2009 - By

The Rochester Americans lost to the Mantioba Moose on Wednesday night in a shootout and have extended their winless streak to seven games.  It wasn’t a bad game by any means.  The officiating was questionable, but not the deciding factor.  Mike Keane won the game in the seventh round of the shootout beating Amerks goaltender Mike Brodeur.

The Manitoba Moose have the best record in the American Hockey League.  The Rochester Americans are second worst in the league.  Games like this make you question whether the other team was having a bad night, or if the Amerks really do have the potential to be a contender next season.

Jason Krog opened the scoring at 7:15 of the first period with a power play goal.  Krog let a fast shot go that beat Plante top corner stick side.  Keaton Ellerby had been sent to the penalty box 1:15 earlier for closing his hand on the puck.  Tyler Plante had lost his stick and with the puck in front of the net Ellerby closed his hand over it.  It was a great shot by Krog and proved why he’s ranked 5th in the league in points (23 G, 43 A) and considered [...]Read More

Amerks Announce Clear Day Roster

March 12, 2009 - By

On Thursday afternoon the Rochester Americans announce their 22 man clear day roster for the remainder of the 08/09 regular season.  It’s yet another sign that the season is quickly coming to a close.  It’s sad that hockey season is winding down, but exciting to REALLY start looking forward to next season.  That’s a whole other topic.

No surprises with the Amerks lineup.  If the team had any plans of making the playoffs this would be a lot more interesting.

Here’s the roster:

Mike Brodeur and Tyler Plante; defensemen Michael Caruso, Jason Garrison, Rory Fitzpatrick, Keaton Ellerby, Jordan Henry, Peter Aston, Franklin MacDonald, and forwards Janis Sprukts, Drew Larman, Stefan Meyer, Michael Duco, Tanner Glass, Dan Collins, Karl Stewart, Shawn Matthias, Kenndal McArdle, Michal Repik, David Brine, Randall Gelech and Riley Emmerson. Forwards Jarret Lukin, Kyle Hagel, Andrew Sweetland, Judd Blackwater and Jacob Micflikier currently remain in residence.

The rest of the AHL also announced their rosters as well.

Keaton Ellerby Assists on Rampage Game Winning Goal

February 9, 2009 - By

The Rochester Americans finally had the chance to climb out of last place in the league on Sunday, but they failed in a 2-1 loss against the San Antonio Rampage. The Amerks are only trailing the 28th place Springfield Falcons by one point in the standings. The Falcons lost earlier in the day against the Binghamton Senators, a win and the Amerks would have finally climbed out of the cellar.

Based on the way they played the team probably deserves to be in last place.

There was no scoring in the first period, but the Amerks did manage to out shoot the Rampage 12-6 with two power play opportunities.  Many of those 12 shots were quality shots, but none were able to find the back of the net.

Riley Emmerson and Francis Lessard dropped the gloves at 2:39 of the first period [watch video], it was a quick fight with about a dozen punches thrown by each before Lessard tossed Emmerson to the ice.  Both players had their helmets on the entire time, which was probably because AHL President and CEO David Andrews was in attendance at the game.

We saw great hustle out of Rory Fitzpatrick who [...]Read More

Amerks Pickup First Road Win in Houston

December 10, 2008 - By

The Amerks were able to mess with Texas and pickup their first road win of the season tonight in a 2-1 shootout against the Houston Aeros.  Jacob Micflikier scored the winning goal in the shootout and Mike Brodeur had another stellar game in goal.

Brodeur saved 26 of 27 shots through the end of overtime and then three of four Houston shots in the shootout.  Could he be the answer we’ve been looking for to try and salvage the season?  After playing in three games it sure does seem that way.  Having a goalie the team can count on may give the defense some more confidence, now if only the offense can put the pack past opposing goalies.. we may start, dare I say it, a winning streak!

Dan Collins scored the Amerks only goal of the game and his fifth of the season at 17:30 of the first period, assists to Mike Duco and David Brine.

The power play goal by Maxim Noreau was the only goal of the game for the Houston Aeros.  The Aeros were one for six on the power play.  On the flip side, the Amerks had seven power play opportunities, including a five on [...]Read More

Amerks Continue Their Losing Streak…Lose To Manchester

November 22, 2008 - By

The Amerks put up a good fight, but couldn’t get past the Manchester Monarchs tonight.  They lost 4-2 to the Manchester Monarchs in a hard fought game.

Chris Beckford-Tseu started the night in goal even though I would have liked to see Shantz in from the beginning.  Chris was pulled in the first period after allowing two goals.  Once Shantz was in net, it was a whole different game.

I am not going to say the first two goals were completely Chris’s fault.  The first goal was scored when Jordan Henry took his 56,723rd hooking penalty of the season.  He was shortly joined in the box by Rory Fitzpatrick when he shot the puck out of the park while in the defensive zone for a delay of game penalty.

I don’t understand why Jordan Henry isn’t being penalized by the team for what he is doing.  He has played in only 8 games and has already gotten 18 penalty minutes.  If these penalties weren’t so stupid, I wouldn’t be so angry about it.  But, they are always hooking penalties (aside from the wonderful cross-checking penalty he took during Wednesday’s game…also brilliant).

Peter Aston could be playing in his spot.  [...]Read More

Gameday 11-10-2008: Another Shot At the Moose

November 10, 2008 - By

Karl Stewart is out on the ice taking some shots today.  Not game ready though…he is in his warmup pants.  I expect him to be ready for Friday’s game.  But, that’s just me.

Jack Birch is here watching the team.  I sure hope he doesn’t think because we played one good game on Saturday that we are fine and just need more time to work on our problems.  Come on Jack…it’s overhaul time.  Instead of watching practice, why don’t you get on the phone and make some calls right now.  Everyone’s agents are working by 10 a.m.

Riley Emmerson continues to impress me with his work ethic.  You can tell he doesn’t just want to sit there and be a goon.  He is working hard to get himself onto the 4th line and get some ice time.  We saw him getting more ice time on Saturday and he didn’t screw up royally.  We asked Benoit Groulx about Emmerson getting more ice time, of course he stated the obvious that it depends how the game itself is going.  ”His role is to have a presence, but as he improves his skating and continues to check more he’ll earn chances [...]Read More

Amerks' Practice 10-28-2008

October 28, 2008 - By

I was hoping to see a really tough practice today after Saturday and Sunday’s games (and even Friday’s, it wasn’t a beautiful win).  And that is exactly what I am seeing.  Coach Benoit is not messing around today…not that he ever messes around.

During the first drill we are here for there are people still not hitting in the corners.  Benoit did not like that.  He called the whole team over to talk about how poorly he felt about that.  It sounded a little something like this. “We are so f***ing soft, so f***ing soft.  I don’t want to see you skating up and just putting your stick in there!  You hit your man and take the puck and get it out of there.”

They are now beating the bejesus out of each other in the corners.  And that is what I like to see.  Hit, hit, hit.  More hitting.  I want this team to start killing the other teams…literally.  I am sick of watching the other teams dig in the corner like professionals and we go in like pansies.  We will never win a corner battle that way.

There is an awful lot of bad words coming [...]Read More

Prospects in the Everblades

October 17, 2008 - By

The Florida Everblades are the ECHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes.  They are also the AHL affiliate of the Rochester Americans and Albany River Rats.

The Everblades start their 08/09 regular season on Friday night against the Charlotte Checkers.  Incidentally, the Checkers just sign Amerks alumni Sean McMorrow.

A number of players on this years Amerks roster spent time last season with the Everblades, including Franklin MacDonald, Tyler Plante, Dan Collins, Kenndal McArdle, Jordan Henry, and Peter Aston.

The number of players associated with the Everblades this season is lighter as the Panthers are the sole affiliate of the Amerks.  While sharing an affiliation with the Sabres last season in Rochester, they were able to keep many players with the Everblades.

The Panthers only prospect currently slated to play with the Everblades is James DeLory.  DeLory is currently recovering from a concussion, once he’s healed from that he will officially be on the Blades roster.

Jacob Micflikier was invited to Amerks camp and was reassigned to the Everblades.

Yannick Tifu is also playing for the Everblades this season, he was signed to a PTO towards the end of the 07/08 season with the Amerks.  He played in [...]Read More

The Panthers have recalled Dan Collins (RW) from the Florida Everblades to the Amerks.  In 24 games played earlier this season for the Amerks he had 3 goals, 5 assists, and 15 penalty minutes.

Frankline MacDonald (D) has been recalled to the Rochester Americans while Adam Taylor (RW) and Dan Collins (RW) have been sent to the Florida Everblades (ECHL)
