Amerks from Last Season Not Returning

The Rochester Americans have announced the 2010-2011 training camp roster which brings in a whole group of new faces and names that we’ll get to know.  That also means a number of players that were on last years team are not returning.  There’s always a lot of changes over the summer with American Hockey League teams and almost impossible for most to keep up with everything.  So, in case you missed anything over the summer here’s a list of players not returning and where they are now.

Rory Fitzpatrick – Retired
Jamie Johnson – Grand Rapids Griffins
Mike York – Finland
Graham Mink – Peoria Rivermen. He was traded to the St Louis Blues in exchange for T.J. Fast.  With the money the Panthers saved by trading Mink they immediately signed Joe Callahan.
Jeff Taffe – Traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Marty Reasoner
Mathieu Roy – Signed 2way deal with Tampa Bay Lightning
Maxime Gratchev – Hartford Wolf Pack
Jordan Henry – KHL
Jimmy Bonneau – Hamilton Bulldogs
Chris Beckford-Tseu – unknown
Alexander Salak – loaned to Farjestad of the Swedish Elite League. With Vokoun and [...]Read More

Grading the 2009-2010 Amerks Player by Player

May 4, 2010 - By

One week ago today we were mentally preparing for game 7 against the Abbotsford Heat and hoping for a legendary game.  It certainly turned out to be a legendary game, unfortunately not in favor of the Amerks.  As sports fans, it’s the type of loss that will live with us forever until another Calder Cup is won.  Until that happens next season, there’s still a number of things to discuss about the one that just ended and I’ll start by grading each of the players.

Thanks to Eric Bourgeois (frequent reader, supporter and die hard Amerks fan) who contributed to this.  There’s a couple things I disagreed with him on and noted.  You may agree or disagree yourself on a lot of things said and I’d love to hear your thoughts.  These grades are based on a lot more than just a stat sheet.

Starting with highest grade to lowest:

Jason Garrison: A-
– He’ll have a full time job in the NHL soon enough.  Eric had him listed as a B+ but I gave him an upgrade.  The Amerks defense had issues all season and without Garrison in the lineup for the post season (2g+7a) things may have [...]Read More

Contract Status for Amerks Players Heading into Next Season

April 29, 2010 - By

Now that the season is over for the Rochester Americans it’s time to take a look and see who is still under contract with the Panthers or Amerks, who is and who is not still likely to sign.  I grouped players by signed, likely to sign and RFA and UFA.  Under each category I put some guesses about the status of the players.

Currently Under Contract for 10/11:

Coaches: Benoit Groulx and Jason Cipolla

Goalies: Alexander Salak, Marc Cheverie

Defense: Michael Caruso, Keaton Ellerby, Adam Comrie, James DeLory

Forwards: Evgeny Dadonov, Michal Repik, Brady Calla, Graham Mink, Chris Taylor, Shawn Matthias, Victor Oreskovich, Eric Selleck, AJ Jenks

One Way: Clay Wilson and Jeff Taffe are signed but to one way contracts with the Florida Panthers.  If they don’t fit into their plans it’s still possible the Panthers will try and have them clear waivers to be sent to the Amerks.

***** Shawn Matthias has probably played his last game in the AHL and should be able to earn a job with the Panthers going forward.  Keaton Ellerby will be trying to earn a job as well but he has some work ahead.  It’s amazing that James DeLory is still under [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks Make Playoffs with Win, Taffe Called Up, Hartlieb In, What about Johnson

March 31, 2010 - By

The Amerks are on the road tonight to play the Grand Rapids Griffins and a win would clinch a playoff spot for the Amerks. Ever since last season ended the coaches and returning players have said their goal was to make the playoffs and that will happen. Even if it’s not clinched tonight, it will happen.

Grand Rapids has been in or near last place for most of the season but they always play hard and will not be an easy task for the Amerks. Just like every other game, if they play for 60 minutes and can stay out of the penalty box they should win. The mystery is not ever knowing which nights that will happen

The Florida Panthers called up Jeff Taffe for their game tonight against the Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo. Booth, Campbell, Bitz and Olesz are all out with injuries. The Panthers season is done, they are not making the playoffs, why couldn’t they have just called up Andrew Sweetland? Let’s hope that next season they can remain a healthier bunch.

Ernie Hartlieb has been called up from the Florida Everblades to play in his place. Hartlieb has played very well with the Blades [...]Read More

Weekend Recap: Two Losses, A Goalie Scored and Steiner Sent to Reading

March 22, 2010 - By

The Amerks lost two games on the road this weekend and sent Daniel Steiner back to Reading.  That’s the weekend in one sentence.  I took the weekend off from watching Amerks hockey and apparently I did not miss all that much but felt the need to write a recap of the weekend.

** Daniel Steiner has been sent back (technically loaned) to the Reading Royals of the ECHL.  Steiner had spent the first part of the season with the Royals after he was not able to land a job in the NHL or AHL.  He is signed to a contract with the Amerks which is why he was technically loaned.  Steiner is considered a veteran and with the other veterans healthy he was the odd man out.  It’s better for him to get playing time than sitting out every game here.  (Prev article: Steiner is Living the Dream)

** The Amerks lost 4-2 on Friday against the Binghamton Senators.  If you look at the final stat sheet you’ll see that B-Sens goalie Chris Holt scored an empty net power play goal.  Yes, a goalie scored against the Amerks.  The Senators had a three goal lead until Graham Mink [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks at Phantoms, Race Towards Playoffs

March 5, 2010 - By

Short and sweet, the run for the playoffs starts this weekend. There’s no more excuses. There’s no time left to blame road trips or even personal gripes with anyone. With only 18 games remaining it’s time to see what this Amerks team is capable of and that includes the coaching staff and players.

The North Division is tight and continues to become tighter with every game played. Hamilton has the clear lead in the division and that does not look like it will change. Every team is looking to get better so it’s time for this team to step it up.

The Amerks are on the road tonight against the Adirondack Phantoms. The last time these two teams played on February 10th the Phantoms won the game 3-1. Rochester won the two previous games.

Graham Mink is not playing tonight, he’s staying in Rochester because his wife is expected to give birth anytime. Daniel Steiner has sat out the two previous games and will be looking to show how valuable he is to the team when he’s in the lineup.

The Amerks also play Saturday in Toronto and then on Sunday in Buffalo against the Portland Pirates.

Cheechoo and Bair Lead B-Sens to Win Over Amerks

February 15, 2010 - By

Less than 24 hours after the Amerks talked about having an exciting win they followed it up with a frustrating loss by losing in regulation for the first time all season after they had the lead for two periods.

The Amerks had a 2-1 lead heading into the second period and ended up losing the game by the final score of 4-2.  Losing a game like that to a last place team is not a good thing.  Amerks head coach Benoit Groulx ignored my request for a minute and walked out the door like I did not exist so I’ll do my best talking about some good things that did happen.

The Amerks did kill off eight of nine power play chances for the Binghamton Senators.  There was also at least two five on three’s that they were able to kill off.

I think that Rory Fitzpatrick played a very solid game, one of his best of the season.  He made a number of great plays on Jonathan Cheechoo keeping him off the puck and was dominant when he had the chance.

Graham Mink played well in front of the net trying to distract Mike Brodeur.  [...]Read More

A Confident Amerks Team Effort Defeats Monsters

February 14, 2010 - By

If there was ever a time for a confident come from behind win it was Saturday night when the Rochester Americans did just that off a goal by Daniel Steiner with one minute remaining in regulation.

The North Division race is getting tight and the games have not been going well recently, but there’s a feeling in the locker room that things are changing for the better.

“I really sensed a different atmosphere with our team tonight.  Going into the third period we were really confident.  We were confident we would come out with a win,” Kenndal McArdle said.   “We were really confident we were the better team tonight.  I was really proud our group pulled together as a team.”

“It was a complete game.  It built off of last night (Friday vs Abbotsford) with low chances against and lots of scoring chances,” Jason Cipolla said.  “It was great our guys stuck with it and came through with two big goals in the third.”

One game does not correct a long stretch of mediocrity but it does prove that the team is capable and that recent issues have been addressed.  The way the players talked [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks at Lake Erie Monsters

February 3, 2010 - By

The Rochester Americans left on Tuesday afternoon for Cleveland for their game tonight against the Lake Erie Monsters, a team they have lost to four times already this season.  Out of five games this season the only one the Amerks have won was a 5-2 decision back on October 9th, the second game of the season.  The Monsters have also outscored the Amerks by a margin of 19-11.

I’d say that paints a pretty optimistic outcome for the game tonight!

Alexander Salak has not yet played against the Monsters so I would hope that he gets the start.  Plante was the winning goaltender in the only win against the Monsters this season.  He also has one of the losses along with Ryan Mior and Chris Beckford-Tseu.

The Monsters have turned their season around from last place and are currently one point out of fourth in the division.  This game is not only important for the Amerks to continue chasing the Bulldogs but also slow down the Monsters from gaining in the standings.

The team will be counting on the line of Jamie Johnson, Jeff Taffe, and Daniel Steiner who seem to be the offensive firepower.  It’d [...]Read More

Amerks Defeat Phantoms and Match Last Years Win Total

January 31, 2010 - By

This season still has an open book and no one knows how it will end but one thing is for certain, they’re not worst than last seasons team!  The 29th win of the season matches last years win total.  Jordan Henry and Jeff Taffe scored goals for the Amerks in their 2-1 win over the Adirondack Phantoms.

The team played poorly on Friday night and rebounded with a quality win on Saturday and then another one on Sunday.  The Amerks have also won seven of their past nine games.

Jordan Henry scored the first goal of the game at 2:43 of the first period off a shot that went off the glove of Phantoms goaltender Johan Backlund.  It looked like Henry was just trying to throw it on net and he got a lucky bounce off the glove.

David Laliberte scored 29 seconds into the second period to tie the game 1-1.  The second period also had the Phantoms out shoot the Amerks by a margin of 20-4.

The game winning goal was scored by Jeff Taffe with assists to Jamie Johnson and Daniel Steiner at 13:51 of the third period.  I don’t think it comes [...]Read More

Amerks Lose on Another Frustrating Friday

January 30, 2010 - By

I think I could be on to a new promo for the team, “Frustrating Fridays.”  You can be frustrated that you got to the cashier at 8:01 and just missed a $1 beer and then you can drive home frustrated that you just saw the game that you did.  The Rochester Americans are a playoff team.  They will make the playoffs, which was the goal at the start of the season.  The question now, can they be a Calder Cup contender?  That’s the frustrating part.  Winning a championship is what everyone wants and because of the way the season started that is what everyone wants and expects.

It’ll be easier to talk about some good things first.  The Rats scored first after a Clay Wilson turnover but Daniel Steiner answered back 73 seconds later to tie the game at one.  Steiner was able to use his speed to skate past his defender, around Brine, and then put the puck into the net.

Less than three minutes after the Rats took a 2-1 lead Jamie Johnson tied the score at two with assists to Clay Wilson and Daniel Steiner.  Clay Wilson did a great job using his [...]Read More

Amerks Sign Steiner for Remainder of the Season

January 27, 2010 - By

The Amerks finally finalized a contract with Daniel Steiner for him to remain with the Amerks for the remainder of the 2009/2010 season.  Steiner has been a valuable asset to the team since arriving at the end of December and has not slowed down.  He’s had great success on the ice and quickly gained a lot of fans in Rochester.

Earlier in the month I wrote an article titled, “Daniel Steiner is Living the Dream,” with a number of NHL scouts at Amerks game he has to be hoping a long playoff run along with the scouts will get him a chance next season in the show.

Here’s an excerpt from my article last month titled, “Daniel Steiner is Living the Dream

He always had a dream to play in North America.  Playing hockey in the best league in the world is on always on the mind when you’re a kid playing hockey.  At the age of 29 he decided it was time to live the dream. He did not want to worry about any regrets when his hockey career is over and he reflects back.  Over the summer he canceled his contract in the [...]Read More
