Dave Andrews 2012 AHL State of the League Address

Every season the morning of the American Hockey League All-Star Game the media gathers in a room with AHL President Dave Andrews to discuss the state of the league.  Some seasons there’s a lot to talk about with teams in financial troubles, team movement or affiliation changes but there really wasn’t any of that this year.  It was a short 40 minute meeting.

Here’s a quick run down of topics discussed:

For the past few years it’s seemed like a struggle behind the scenes to find a host city for the All-Star game but going forward they expect to announce next years city in the coming weeks and even have plans for years going forward.  Ted Black had mentioned recently that they’d love to see the game back in Rochester but next year will NOT be the year.  It’s something the Amerks would like to host again at some point.  There’s a lot of time and money that goes into hosting the event which is why AHL cities aren’t exactly begging for the game.  Not every team has a large office staff to handle the logistics.  The need for a sponsor is also [...]Read More

Oklahoma City, Charlotte and Other Possible AHL Affiliation Changes

February 9, 2010 - By

The next six months are going to be for the American Hockey League with teams being sold, teams being moved, and affiliation changes taking place.  This post could become confusing with all of the changes and possibilities that could take place.

One thing is for certain is that the affiliation between the Rochester Americans and Florida Panthers will last through the 2010/2011 season.  Talks have not yet started about a possible extension but it was recently reported in the Democrat and Chronicle that both parties have until November 2010 to work something out.

American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews announced today that the league’s Board of Governors has approved the relocation of the AHL franchise owned by the Edmonton Oilers from Edmonton, Alta., to Oklahoma City, Okla., to begin play there in the fall of 2010.

No, there is not currently an AHL team in Edmonton.  The Edmonton Oilers are one of many NHL teams that owns the rights to an AHL franchise so in a sense they are relocating what they own but has been dormant from Edmonton to Oklahoma City.  The still unnamed team will play at the Cox Convention Center.

Emmerson and McMorrow on Fighting

March 12, 2009 - By

The buzzword of this season in professional hockey is fighting, as a web site covering hockey it’s our duty to also report on the topic.  Fighting has been a part of hockey since the sports rise in the early 19th century.

There are a number of theories behind the integration of fighting into the game, the most common of which being that the relative lack of rules in the early history of hockey encouraged physical intimidation and control. [1]

In 1922, the NHL introduced Rule 56 which formally regulated fighting, or “fisticuffs” as it was called in the official NHL rulebook. Rather than ejecting players from the game, as was the practice in amateur and collegiate hockey, players would be given a five-minute major penalty. Rule 56 and its language also filtered down to the minor professional and junior leagues in North America. [8]

The primary reason for fighting being discussed this year more than previous is due to the tragic death of Ontario senior men’s league player Don Sanderson.  The NHL and AHL both plan on having discussions at the end of the season about fighting and it’s place [...]Read More

Rochester to host AHL All-Star Game in 2011?

January 28, 2009 - By

In two years the American Hockey League will be having it’s 75th anniversary of the All-Star Classic and the league still needs a home for the event.  The President and CEO of the AHL stated at the annual state of the league address that he would like to have it in a city that has some history in the league.  The general consensus amongst others seemed to narrow that down to either Hershey or Rochester.

The Rochester Americans last hosted the All-Star game on January 17, 2000 at Blue Cross Arena.  The Hershey Bears last hosted the event on January 16, 1996.  The four year difference would not really make that much of a difference with one city deserving it more than the other.

As we spent the weekend in Worcester for the 2009 All-Star Classic events it was amazing to talk to so many people about the Amerks and Rochester in general.  The one comment that seemed to be made by most was about wanting to see the Amerks get back amongst the elite of the league.

Lewis Staats also commented that it had been brought up in discussions, but nothing more than in general conversation.

When I mentioned [...]Read More
