Grading the 2009-2010 Amerks Player by Player

5
May 4, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

One week ago today we were mentally preparing for game 7 against the Abbotsford Heat and hoping for a legendary game.  It certainly turned out to be a legendary game, unfortunately not in favor of the Amerks.  As sports fans, it’s the type of loss that will live with us forever until another Calder Cup is won.  Until that happens next season, there’s still a number of things to discuss about the one that just ended and I’ll start by grading each of the players.

Thanks to Eric Bourgeois (frequent reader, supporter and die hard Amerks fan) who contributed to this.  There’s a couple things I disagreed with him on and noted.  You may agree or disagree yourself on a lot of things said and I’d love to hear your thoughts.  These grades are based on a lot more than just a stat sheet.

Starting with highest grade to lowest:

Jason Garrison: A-
– He’ll have a full time job in the NHL soon enough.  Eric had him listed as a B+ but I gave him an upgrade.  The Amerks defense had issues all season and without Garrison in the lineup for the post season (2g+7a) things may have [...]Read More

Contract Status for Amerks Players Heading into Next Season

4
April 29, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

Now that the season is over for the Rochester Americans it’s time to take a look and see who is still under contract with the Panthers or Amerks, who is and who is not still likely to sign.  I grouped players by signed, likely to sign and RFA and UFA.  Under each category I put some guesses about the status of the players.

Currently Under Contract for 10/11:

Coaches: Benoit Groulx and Jason Cipolla

Goalies: Alexander Salak, Marc Cheverie

Defense: Michael Caruso, Keaton Ellerby, Adam Comrie, James DeLory

Forwards: Evgeny Dadonov, Michal Repik, Brady Calla, Graham Mink, Chris Taylor, Shawn Matthias, Victor Oreskovich, Eric Selleck, AJ Jenks

One Way: Clay Wilson and Jeff Taffe are signed but to one way contracts with the Florida Panthers.  If they don’t fit into their plans it’s still possible the Panthers will try and have them clear waivers to be sent to the Amerks.

***** Shawn Matthias has probably played his last game in the AHL and should be able to earn a job with the Panthers going forward.  Keaton Ellerby will be trying to earn a job as well but he has some work ahead.  It’s amazing that James DeLory is still under [...]Read More

Crunch Finally Defeat the Amerks, In Game Number 80

1
April 11, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

The game on Saturday night meant absolutely nothing to the Rochester Americans.  A win against the Crunch would have been a great way to end the season with a complete sweep of the ten games between the two teams but it wasn’t meant to be, the Crunch won the game 5-2.

The supposed plan was to start Alexander Salak in the game but I don’t think that was ever going to happen.  Even if Tyler Plante did not get called up I think someone else would have been brought in to start in net for the Amerks.  With nothing on the line and the Crunch with a strong dislike for both goalies it was obvious that something would have happened.

Jon Mirasty spent time during the warmups chirping at Salak but Salak didn’t give him the time of day.  Maybe if those players spent less time worried about trying to intimidate their opponents during warmups they’d be in the playoffs instead of scheduling locker cleanout day.

Alex Petizian Save on Chad Kolarik

Alex Petizian was the unfortunate goaltender to get the call and make this is his first professional game.  The game will either scar him for life [...]Read More

Lousy Special Teams Leads Amerks to 3-1 Loss

February 10, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

The Amerks played another what looked like uninspired game on Wednesday night in their 3-1 loss to the Adirondack Phantoms.  Something needs to change.  Obviously Benoit Groulxs talk on the ice at practice on Tuesday had no effect on the team.  The penalty kill was horrible.  The power play was horrible.  The passing was weak.  There was no real offensive threat.

The Phantoms were 2/4 on their power play and the Amerks went 0/3.  It’s impressive watching other teams on a penalty kill box out the Rochester Americans and don’t give them anything to work with.  On the other end of the ice the penalty kill is all over the place.

If the players can’t motivate themselves and the coach can’t seem to motivate the players, who’s job is it?  If the players and coaches don’t have an answer about the reason for the poor play than who does?  One persons name that is being talked about around town is Ted Nolan.  Everyone knows his experience.  Is that really his place?  No idea, but nothing else is working so what could it really hurt if he spoke up?

Michal Repik was the lone goal scorer for [...]Read More

Perpetual Bad Habits Do Amerks In

February 3, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

The Rochester Americans lost again to the Lake Erie Monsters, their 5th loss of the season against the Monsters.  The deciding factor in the game was three goals in a short span of three minutes and 24 seconds when the Monsters scored all three of their goals.  The Amerks played well in the third but it was too little too late.  It was another frustrating road loss to watch.  The two goals for the Amerks were scored by Jimmy Bonneau and David Brine.  Jamie Johnson picked up an assist to extend his point streak to ten games.

It was frustrating.  I’m not really sure where to start so I’ll put up a guest post of sorts.

(This was a post by the user named insagt1 on RochesterSportsFan.com, a local message board where a number of die hard sports fans discuss Amerks hockey)

The Rochester Americans refuse to learn. And so they truly deserved to lose tonites hockey game against Lake Erie.

When is this team going to figure it out:
1) You can’t take a period or even a part of a period off every night and expect to keep stealing wins
2) [...]Read More

Repik and Johnson Lead Amerks to 3-1 Win over Phantoms

January 25, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

The Amerks rebounded respectably from their 6-1 loss on Friday night to close out the weekend with a 3-1 win over the visiting Adirondack Phantoms for a second straight win.  The first period wasn’t pretty but for a team playing three games in three days they found a way to finish the game and pull out the win.

For the first time this season I get the impression that the team is now looking at the end goal of making the playoffs and positioning themselves in the division.

“Today was a very important game today, we tried to catch up with Hamilton and get away from Manitoba and Abbotsford and they weren’t playing so we have a game in hand,” Benoit Groulx said postgame.

The first period was sloppy on both sides of the ice.  It was pretty obvious that both teams were playing their third game in three nights.  The passes were sloppy.  The shots were sloppy.  If things had continued half the arena probably would have been either asleep or out the door.

The Phantoms scored first when Andreas Nodl won a battle for the puck along the boards and carried the play into [...]Read More

David Brine Returning Wednesday Night vs Hamilton

December 29, 2009 - By Keith Wozniak

David Brine has been out with a rib injury and will return to action on Wednesday night vs the Hamilton Bulldogs.  I caught up with him at an Amerks youth camp this afternoon that my son took part in.  Brine has been out since early December and has been missed on faceoffs and the penalty kill unit.  The Amerks PK unit was near the top of the league but has since fallen to the middle of the pack.

In 23 games this season Brine has 9 goals and 5 assists, 2 of those goals were scored short handed.

I think I’ve mentioned a few times over the past few days that the team seems to be getting back on the right track both with their play and players.

Wow.. Amerks Have a Practice Tuesday Morning

December 29, 2009 - By Keith Wozniak

It’s a been a rare thing for the Amerks over the past month to have a practice but they finally had one Tuesday morning. It seemed like just about the whole team was back together too.

Mike York, David Brine, Tyler Plante, Rory Fitzpatrick, and Luke Beaverson were all on the ice. Rory said he’ll be back on January 8th. I did not get the chance to talk to anyone else, was only at ESL to get my kid signed up for a camp and happened to get there near the end of practice.

The team is getting back in the right direction and should be just about back to the full team by the time they play Grand Rapid on January 8th. Next week they’ll have a week of practice which will help out even more.

Next game is Wednesday night on the road in Hamilton and on Thursday at 5pm against Lake Erie. I’ll have the live chat going for Wednesdays game.

Team Canada All-Star roster is announced at 2pm. I asked Jody Gage who was going and he said he was sworn to secrecy.

Amerks Monday Morning Injury Update

December 21, 2009 - By Keith Wozniak

The Amerks started out a strong team and have since turned into a team depleted by injuries and call ups. Straight to the point, Benoit Groulx said after the game Sunday evening that he does not expect anyone back in the next 10 days to two weeks. Still not a clear timeline but the fact he said that doesn’t paint a very good picture.

Here’s an update on who is hurt:

Alexander Salak (shoulder) – left the game on 12/20 with a shoulder injury. He is expected to visit a doctor today to find out what is wrong.

Luke Beaverson (shoulder) – he was injured on 11/6 and has missed the previous 19 games. Hurt by a nasty hit from Kevin Harvey.

Tyler Plante (knee) – he was injured on 10/21, played again on 11/28 but his knee acted up again. There has not been anything official said about what’s wrong with his knee. He has tried practicing several times but everytime he does his knee acts up again. He has missed 23 games.

Rory Fitzpatrick (hernia) – he last played on 11/12 and has missed a total of 17 games since. He has a missed a total of 23 [...]Read More
