David Shantz Sent to Elmira Jackals of the ECHL

December 16, 2008 - By

David Shantz

With the excellent play of newcomer Mike Brodeur it was only a matter of time before David Shantz was going to be reassigned to another team.  Rochester Americans General Manager Jody Gage announced today that the Florida Panthers have reassigned goaltender David Shantz to the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL.

Shantz had been called up to the Amerks on November 10th and at the same time Tyler Plante was shipped off to the Dayton Bombers.

The Bombers and Jackals face off on January 13th and 14th in Elmira if you’re interested in seeing either goaltender possibly play in the area, we’ll be heading down to check the game out.

Shantz departs Rochester after posting a 0-3-1 record with a 2.94 goals-against average and a .898 save percentage in five games between the pipes for the Amerks.

The 22-year-old native of Burlington, Ontario, began the 2008-09 season with the Dayton Bombers (ECHL), where he registered a 4-2-1 record with one shutout to go along with a 2.35 goals-against average and a season-high 160 saves in seven games.

The 6-foot-1, 207-pound netminder was the Florida Panthers’ second-round selection (37th overall) in the 2004 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

Amerks Still Searching For First Road Win…Don't Get The Win But, Take a Point

November 30, 2008 - By

Sorry for the lack of reports on the Amerks’ games this week.  The family was on vacation up in Toronto and with the holidays, it has been hard to get thing going.  We will have a full week report after tonight’s game.

The Amerks are currently playing the Toronto Marlies where they are fighting for their first road win.  I am watching the game on AHL Live.  Toronto has a very good feed.  I would recommend if you want to watch an away game on the site, a Toronto one would be the way to go.

The first period is almost over.  3:11 to go.  The score is 1-1.  Jason Garrison scored a nice one on the powerplay a few minutes ago.  I just tuned in (I forgot the game was early tonight) so I didn’t get to see the Marlies’ goal.

David Shantz is in goal for the Amerks.  He has been playing pretty solid this year.  Both in the ECHL with the Dayton Bombers and in Rochester although the loses don’t show that.  He really has improved by a lot after last season.

Amerks score on the powerplay again!  17:31 of the first.  2 for 3 [...]Read More

Gameday 11-14-2008: Amerks Host Chicago Wolves

November 14, 2008 - By

Tonight, the Amerks finish their six game home stand against the defending Calder Cup champions, the Chicago Wolves.  The Wolves have only let in 20 goals in their first 13 games…so, this is not going to be an easy task tonight.

Rory Fitzpatrick, Kenndal McArdle and Janis Sprukts are not on the ice right now.  The guys practiced extreemly hard all week and Kenndal wasn’t feeling well yesterday.  According to Stefan Meyer, Sprukts will be in the lineup tonight.  I am assuming Rory will be too, but he probably needed some recovery time from yesterday’s practice too.  I don’t know about Kenndal.  It depends if he had a cold yesterday or the broncitis that has been going around Rochester.  Today’s skate was optional, so any missing people are probably just getting ready for tonight by not killing themselves in the morning.

Tanner Glass is diligently working on tipping the puck in.  He’s been working with Ellerby, Garrison, Beaverson and MacDonald for the past ten minutes.  Hopefully, he can get it right during the game.  I’m certainly glad that Tanner’s injury from Monday night didn’t keep him out of this weekend’s lineup.

As Jason Cipolla was just talking about…tonight is a [...]Read More

Practice 11-12-2008: The Shantz Is Back

November 12, 2008 - By

David Shantz has made his return to the Rochester Americans.  For me, he is a sight for sore eyes.  He has been playing well in Dayton this season.  He played seven games there, getting four wins, with one shutout and an overtime loss.  He has a 2.35 goals against average and a .914 save percentage this year.

He clearly can’t do any worse than what has been going on here.  So, there is nothing wrong with giving him a try.  He has to do better than Beckford-Tseu’s 4.11 GAA and .853 save percentage.  Or poor Tyler Plante’s 5.10 GAA and .850 save percentage.

Luke Beaverson has on a white jersey today…so, they either ran out of black defenseman jerseys or he is being tried out as a forward.  No, he is definetely practicing as a forward today.  That might not be a bad idea.  We all saw what happened last year when Gragnani was pulled up to score.  Beaverson might be the big body in front of the net that will work well…it’s certainly worth trying.  All ideas are worth it at this point.

It surprises me that everytime I come here I see [...]Read More

Help! I Need Somebody…Not Just Anybody…

November 11, 2008 - By

During last night’s game, a familiar Beatles’ tune was played after one of the Moose’ goals.  As “Help!” was playing I was laughing a little to myself, thinking about how badly we really need some help.  And no, it can’t just be from anybody…we need huge changes.

This topic has already been discussed a million times this season (and in the pre-season when the lineup was first looked at).  Any fan of hockey could tell that the team we were being handed wasn’t going to go very far.  But, we all hoped for the best.  We all thought we must be getting some veterans to spice up our lineup and teach our team, that is basically made out of rookies, how to play professional hockey.

But, no.  Here we are, more than a month into the season, and we have only won two games.  So, what do the Panthers do to help us?  Send Tyler Plante to the ECHL and call up David Shantz.  That is the answer we have all been looking for!  Who needs vets when you can trade a goalie for another goalie of the same caliber?

And the next big move by the Panthers and Amerks?  Send Doug O’Brien down [...]Read More

Shantz is Back; Plante is off to Dayton

November 10, 2008 - By

In a somewhat suprising move, David Shantz has been called up to the Rochester Americans from the Dayton Bombers.  Tyler Plante packed up his equipment after the tonights 5-1 loss against the Manitoba Moose.

In seven games this season with the Bombers, Shantz has a 4-2 record with one shoot out loss.  He’s averaged 2.35 GA with a 0.914 save percentage.  You may remember Shantz from the early part of the 07/08 season with the Amerks.

On the flipside, Plante has played in six games for the Amerks.  He’s gone 0-5 with a 5.10 GAA and 0.850 save percentage.

While neither goalie has played well for the Amerks, they’ve both performed well elsewhere.  That’s probably due to having a better team in front of them.   While everyone has been demanding change of some sort, this isn’t what we were expecting.  It may be the start of more changes to come.

David Shantz Assigned to Dayton Bombers

October 21, 2008 - By

The Florida Panthers assigned goalie David Shantz to the Dayton Bombers on Monday.  I’m sure many Amerk fans will get a laugh from the second line of the article below.  We still believe in Shantz and wish him the best of luck in Dayton!  Below is from DaytonBombers.com

NHL’s Florida Panthers Assign Goalie to Bombers

David Shantz to Provide Experience and Leadership to Team

October 20, 2008

Dayton, OH – The Dayton Bombers have been assigned goaltender David Shantz from the National Hockey League’s Florida Panthers, head coach Bill McDonald announced today.

Shantz, a 2nd round draft pick, 37th overall, by the Panthers in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, enters his third professional season after splitting the past two years between the Panthers “AAA” affiliate, the Rochester Americans, and their “AA” ECHL affiliate, the Florida Everblades.

“David’s experience should help our younger defensemen and (rookie goalie) Paul Drew,” McDonald said. “This is a big year in his career and we’re looking forward to what he brings to our organization.”

During the 2007-08 season, the Burlington, Ontario, native went 11-5-3 with the Everblades, with a 2.56 GAA and .916 save percentage. The year before he was 13-7-1 with [...]Read More

David Shantz Recalled to Panthers

October 16, 2008 - By

David Shantz was recalled from the Florida Everblades on Thursday to the Florida Panthers.  The Florida Everblades are set to open their regular season on Friday night.  It’s assumed that the Panthers have made this move to loan him out to another ECHL team.

Houston Aeros Assistant General Manager Troy G. Ward announced today that goaltender Anton Khudobin has been loaned to ECHL Florida Everblades, which would give the Blades a second goaltender.

David Shantz started the 07/08 season with the Rochester Americans before being reassigned to the Everblades.  He played in 14 games with the Amerks and had a record of 1-10-1.  His GAA was 4.07 and save pct was 0.863.  While his stats weren’t the best, he was also the product of a bad team in front of him.

When he was reassigned to the Everblades he played in 20 games, had a record of 11-5-3 with a 2.56 GAA and 0.916 save pct.

Rumors have been swirling that the Amerks are interested in LW Riley Emersson who currently plays for the Everblades but is property of the Minnesota Wild, this could be part of something in the works.  Emersson is 6’8″ and 246lbs and a known [...]Read More

Shantz Reassigned To Everblades, Dennis Back

January 1, 2008 - By

The Florida Everblades announced that the Florida Panthers have reassigned goaltender David Shantz from the Amerks.  With that move it appears as though Adam Dennis is expected back on Wednesday.
