Goalie Tyler Plante Talks Veteran Presence

September 26, 2009 - By

The key to success for teams in the American Hockey League is to have a veteran presence on a roster of players in their young 20′s who have more or less moved away from home for the first time.

Players need a peer that they can talk to in the locker room, someone they can relate to.  It’s easier to talk to and listen to a peer than to a coach who knows the game but may not know what you’re going through.

The lack of a veteran presence is something that has been missing from the Amerks roster in recent years and it has showed in the league standings.

I asked goaltender Tyler Plante what’s different this year and he said, “You can already feel a vet presence in the room, its a welcome change.   It’s a little more serious of an attitude already and you can feel it.”

Jarret Lukin Released from Amerks

March 18, 2009 - By

Jarret Lukin has packed up his equipment and is headed back to the ECHL to rejoin the Dayton Bombers.  He’s being released by the Rochester Americans from his PTO contract.  He played in six games for the Amerks and assisted on three goals.  Prior to his short time here in Rochester he scored 21 goals, and 23 assists in 57 games played with the Bombers.  He had some strengths on face offs with the Amerks and even put up some points, but with the return of injured players a roster spot wasn’t available for him.

Coming From Behind, Amerks Last Week of February in Review

March 1, 2009 - By

We have a lot to catch up on with the Rochester Americans over the past week so we’re going to get everyone up to speed in one post, in case you have not been paying attention.  We spent our week improving the offices of Lets Go Amerks and a night out at the Cystic Fibrosis dinner.

Here we go…

* Starting with last Sunday, the Toronto Marlies defeated the Amerks by the final score of 6-2.  The Marlies were beat 3-1 the day before by the Amerks in Toronto, so the Marlies came out angry and never let up.  Game Summary

* Luke Beaverson and Andrew Sweetland were assigned to the Florida Everblades on Wednesday afternoon.  Sweetland had played in 40 games for the Amerks and only tallied two assists and 10 penalty minutes.  Beaverson had played in 14 games for the Amerks and got on the scoresheet with one assist and 21 penalty minutes.

* The Cystic Fibrosis Annual Celebrity Waiter Dinner & Auction was on Wednesday night at Blue Cross Arena.  The Amerks and Knighthawks teamed up for this years fundraiser.  Over the past 18 years, the Amerks have raised over $650,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis [...]Read More

The Battle Of The Backups: Plante vs Shantz

January 13, 2009 - By

Goaltenders, Tyler Plante (Dayton Bombers) and David Shantz (Elmira Jackals) will be taking each other on tonight when their teams battle it out in Elmira.  Both goalies have played for the Amerks this season and last.  But, once Michael Brodeur was brought on board it was clear that neither of them would be needed in Rochester.  They were both sent to different teams in the ECHL.

We here at LetsGoAmerks decided to go see our old backup goalies take each other on for the title of “most relevant backup goalie.”

Tyler Plante was the first to be shipped out of Rochester when he had a poor showing in Rochester.  Winning none of his 6 starts and being pulled once.  He had  20 goals against in that time.  He was sent to Dayton and David Shantz was brought to Rochester to see what he could do.

Shantz really didn’t do much better.  He started in 5 games, was pulled once and lost 3 of the 4 games he stayed in.  The only point he earned was in an overtime loss.  Although, his goals against average was much better than Plante’s.

People in Elmira are happy to [...]Read More

David Shantz Assigned to Dayton Bombers

October 21, 2008 - By

The Florida Panthers assigned goalie David Shantz to the Dayton Bombers on Monday.  I’m sure many Amerk fans will get a laugh from the second line of the article below.  We still believe in Shantz and wish him the best of luck in Dayton!  Below is from DaytonBombers.com

NHL’s Florida Panthers Assign Goalie to Bombers

David Shantz to Provide Experience and Leadership to Team

October 20, 2008

Dayton, OH – The Dayton Bombers have been assigned goaltender David Shantz from the National Hockey League’s Florida Panthers, head coach Bill McDonald announced today.

Shantz, a 2nd round draft pick, 37th overall, by the Panthers in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, enters his third professional season after splitting the past two years between the Panthers “AAA” affiliate, the Rochester Americans, and their “AA” ECHL affiliate, the Florida Everblades.

“David’s experience should help our younger defensemen and (rookie goalie) Paul Drew,” McDonald said. “This is a big year in his career and we’re looking forward to what he brings to our organization.”

During the 2007-08 season, the Burlington, Ontario, native went 11-5-3 with the Everblades, with a 2.56 GAA and .916 save percentage. The year before he was 13-7-1 with [...]Read More
