Bonneau vs Spencer Fight Video; Team Stands Tall Together

January 11, 2010 - By

The Amerks did something on Sunday night that I don’t think they have done a lot of throughout the season, sticking up for each other when the Binghamton Senators started hitting hard.

Jamie Johnson scored the first goal of the game at 7:53 of the first period to take a 1-0 lead.  On the ensuing face off the puck dropped and Jimmy Bonneau and Tim Spencer dropped the gloves (video below).  The obvious point of the fight was for the Binghamton Senators to try and gain some momentum.  It didn’t work.

About five minutes later Denis Hamel hit Jeff Taffe hard in the corner and put a little elbow in there as well for good measure.  Jamie Johnson was quick to skate in go after Hamel in the corner.  Jeff Taffe also got into the mix along with Tomas Kudelka of the Binghamton Senators.  It was in the corner and tough to see but it looked like a few jabs were probably thrown with a lot of pushing and shoving.

That’s something that is supposed to happen in a hockey game.  You’re teammate gets hit hard and you go in and defend him.  Unfortunately I think [...]Read More

Amerks Getting Back on Track with 5-3 Win Over B-Sens

December 28, 2009 - By

After a month long skid for the Rochester Americans I believe that things are headed back in the right direction.  The Amerks won their second game of the weekend by defeating the Binghamton Senators 5-3 in front of 4,367 in downtown Rochester on Sunday evening.  There are still some concerns, but the lineup that has been depleted by call ups and injuries seems to be finding it’s way.

The AHL has 43 transactions for the Amerks just in the month of December and there’s still a few days left.  That is a lot of change.  Within the month of December was also a number of injuries, the tail end of a six game road trip, a hectic travel schedule, and very few regular practices.  Those are not excuses, they are facts that impact consistency and chemistry.  It’s only two wins, but they’re wins that will give the team a much needed boost of confidence.

It also helps to have Jeff Taffe back in the lineup playing on a line with Jamie Johnson and Michal Repik.  Those three players combined for a total of six points on Sunday.  The two assists for Johnson gives him 32 points [...]Read More

Graham Mink All-Star Captain; Vote Amerks into All-Star Game

December 4, 2009 - By

Graham Mink was named a playing Captain on Thursday for the 2010 AHL All-Star game and with that honored he joins a distinguished group of current and former Amerks.  Previous Amerks honored as AHL All-Star Captains include Jody Gage, Randy Cunneyworth, Denis Hamel, and Rory Fitzpatrick.

All you have to do is look at Mink’s resume and watch him play to understand why he was honored.  Two Calder Cup championships.  Leadership.  Scoring.  Play’s hard every game.  He has fun.  He’s smart.  Involved in the community.  The list goes on.

I’ll be traveling to the All-Star Game again this season and will have full reports again.

You can vote for players, plenty of Amerks on the list, into the AHL All-Star Game here – http://theahl.com/forms/ahl-all-star-ballot-f1

Amerks Coast Again, Third Period Collapse Leads to Loss

November 28, 2009 - By

Tyler Plante tried to set the tone early in the game Saturday night by telling Tim Spencer of the Binghamton Senators that no one is allowed in his crease.  Only four minutes into the game as Spencer skated through part of the crease Plante gave him a nice shove and next thing we know they’re trading punches.  The game was Plantes first since October 21st against the Binghamton Senators when he hurt his knee after being run into multiple times.

He sent the message that it’s his crease, his home, and he does not need anyone else to stick up for him.

Unfortunately Jimmy Bonneau got thrown out of the game for being the third man in as he jumped in to help out Plante, even though it wasn’t needed.

**** UPDATE: All I had to go on was the replays shown, but apparently more happened.  Earlier in the play as Spencer skated by close to the net he caught the butt end of Plantes stick.  Spencer also took a run at an Amerks player but missed completely which led to Plante making some wise cracks (which he’s well known for).  That’s when things broke loose.  [...]Read More

Amerks Win Again, Longest Streak Since 2005

October 31, 2009 - By

The Amerks came into Friday night riding a seven game winning streak that started back on October 12th, two days after they were pretty much destroyed by Albany.  When they left Binghamton on Friday night the Amerks extended the winning streak to eight games, the longest since early 2005.

A big concern coming into tonights game would be how the Amerks would do without Jeff Taffe, Michal Repik, and Kenndal McArdle out of the lineup.  By the end of the first period it was clear this team was going to do just fine.

Once the final buzzer sounded it was great to see the team gather in their own end and congratulate each other.  It was not a wild celebration in the oppositions barn but a way for all of them to say to each other great game.  It’s still very early in the season but stay tuned, the chemistry in this team could be something special.

Just getting home from the trip, here’s my recap from the game:

The worst part of the game was early in the first when the Amerks were unable to do anything when they had a four minute power play [...]Read More
