Video Highlights from the Amerks 6-5 OT Win Against the Crunch

The Amerks winner in overtime was an interesting game.  There was 11 goals scored.  Penalties.  Breakaway goals.  Defensive breakdowns.  Great passing and even some questionable goaltending.  By the time the game was over the Amerks had the win and two additional points in the standings.

There are some highlight reel goals in here from Mark Voakes looking like a wide receiver at center ice, Zack Kassians fancy stickwork on his fifth goal of the season and a superb shot by Brayden McNabb in overtime to secure the win.

You can see the Syracuse Crunch goals as well and see some defensive breakdowns by the Amerks and a soft goal by David Leggio.

As always, I apologize about the blurry scoreboard video highlights but they’re better than nothing at all.  Share and enjoy!

Amerks Erased Two Goal Deficit but Lost in Overtime

Amerks Erased Two Goal Deficit but Lost in Overtime

The Rochester Americans were down by two goals heading into the third period but goals by Colin Stuart (third of the season) and Derek Whitmore (fourth of the season) narrowed the game and forced the game into overtime.  Louis Leblanc scored his first professional goal in his first professional game to lead the Bulldogs to the win in overtime.

It’s great to hear the team come back from being down two goals to tie the game up.  They didn’t quit playing, they continued to battle for the puck and found ways to beat Bulldogs goaltender Nathan Lawson.  The two goals were scored by two players considered leaders of the team, Colin Stuart and Derek Whitmore.

David Leggio made 25 saves out of 27 shots faced in regulation time.

You can read the Amerks postgame report below, I didn’t get the chance to watch or listen to the game so I can’t offer anything else on it.

There’s a couple ways to look at things from here after only nine games.

The Amerks have earned points in six of their last seven games.  They’re keeping the games close.  They may not be as talented as their opponents but they’re not getting [...]Read More

Gameday: Collapse in Toronto; Amerks Back Home vs Adirondack

Gameday: Collapse in Toronto; Amerks Back Home vs Adirondack

A wonderful Sunday evening game ahead of us, the third game in three nights for the Rochester Americans and Adirondack Phantoms.  The Amerks had a third period collapse on Saturday afternoon that resulted in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Toronto Marlies.  It’s a game that the team knows inside they they squandered but at the same time they’re already focusing on the game today.

The Phantoms were in Portland on Friday where they won 3-0 and then lost 5-2 in Albany on Saturday night.

Marcus Foligno will be back on the ice after serving his two game suspension.  Chris Clackson was sent back to the Gwinnett Gladiators after filling in on the roster.

It’ll be interesting to see what this young team looks like on the ice today.  Sunday games in the AHL are typically snoozefests between tired teams.  The Amerks didn’t play into Saturday night so other than fatigue from the game they were able to get a good nights sleep in their own homes.

They worked hard to come from behind on Friday night before losing in the skills competition (shootout) and then the late game collapse yesterday so they should be fired up and ready to [...]Read More

Amerks Injury Updates and the Parker Suspension

Amerks Injury Updates and the Parker Suspension

The Amerks finished up their morning skate today after a day off yesterday and Ron Rolston gave us some updates on injuries to the team.  The only “new injury” was Derek Whitmore who sat out today with a muscle strain but is expected back tomorrow.

Jonathan Parker was suspended for one game for the high stick that broke the nose of Grand Rapids Griffins forward Brent Raedeke in the first period.  There was no penalty called on the play, the referee had called the play accidental.  The American Hockey League on the other hand says that players need to be in control of their own sticks and handed down the one game suspension.

The Amerks will be down a forward for tomorrow’s game due to the suspension of Parker and Marcus Foligno.  Rolston said that a defenseman will likely move up to fill in the role of the 12th forward.

Paul Szczechura has no real time frame to return.  Ron Rolston had said early November but it really comes down to when the doctors clear Szczechura to play.  He had been injured last April in game three of the playoff series between the Norfolk Admirals and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and had to [...]Read More

Marcus Foligno and Jonathan Parker Suspended

Marcus Foligno and Jonathan Parker Suspended

Rochester Americans forwards Marcus Foligno and Jonathan Parker have each received suspensions from the American Hockey League based on actions during this past Sundays game against the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Foligno was given a two game suspension as a consequence for boarding in the third period that was the cause of this fight.  Foligno will miss games this Friday (Oct 21) vs Hamilton and Saturday (Oct 22) at Toronto.  I missed the hit and did not see a replay so I can’t really comment further.

Jonathan Parker was given a one game suspension and will miss Fridays game vs Hamilton as a consequence for a high sticking incident.  I believe the high sticking occurred off of a face off when one of the Griffins players left a trail of blood on the ice to the bench.  If this is the same incident it was surprising there wasn’t a call on the play itself.  That’s the only high sticking incident I can recall.

It appears as if Corey Tropp has been cleared for this incident that seemed to get the most attention.

It’s probably safe to assume that the Amerks will send video to the AHL for incidents that [...]Read More

Team Effort by Amerks Leads to Shootout Win (Video included)

Team Effort by Amerks Leads to Shootout Win (Video included)

What we have here folks is a nice three game winning streak!  The Amerks played 60 minutes of hockey where we saw them come back from a two goal deficit to defeat the Syracuse Crunch 3-2 in a shootout on Tuesday night.  Jacob Lagace scored the first goals for the Amerks followed by the tying goal at 15:02 of the third period on the power play by Nick Crawford.  Derek Whitmore and Jonathan Parker scored in the shootout to secure the win with David Leggio playing a key role in net for the team.

The Amerks have tomorrow off before geting back to practice on Thursday ahead of three games in three nights this weekend.

The game started out rough with the Syracuse Crunch going up 2-0 within the first six minutes of the game after costly turnovers by Corey Tropp and Travis Turnbull on the first goal and TJ Brennan on the second.

Kyle Palmieri scored the first goal of the game after the turnover by sniping the puck into the top corner after he faked out Leggio making it look like he was about to pass the puck.

“First one was a terrible goal.  Bad goal, short side, [...]Read More

Recap: Amerks First Home Win Had It All, Including Seven Goals

Recap: Amerks First Home Win Had It All, Including Seven Goals

It’s amazing how one solid hockey game can put another one in the past, even if there’s only four games played on the season.  The Rochester Americans on Sunday evening showed what they can be capable of when all of the right pieces fall into place with a 7-2 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins.  There’s still some things to work on (defensive turnovers) but overall it was an exciting night of hockey inside Blue Cross Arena.

Six different players scored goals, 10 players tallied an assist, 15 out of 18 players had at least one shot on net and 52 minutes in penalties were handed out.  This was the type of hockey game that would’ve had the arena off it’s foundation at the home opener. The game also featured fights, questionable hits and a couple instances of blood on the ice.  But it happened tonight and if you weren’t there you missed out.  This is also the type of hockey game that if played like this often will quickly attract fans regularly into the building.

A quick turnaround from the doom and gloom of Thursdays home opener.  There’s every reason to believe that after that poor performance they’ve turned [...]Read More

Amerks Score Some Goals and Record Their First Win

Amerks Score Some Goals and Record Their First Win

The Amerks played it simple, score goals to take a lead instead of trying to play catch up and it resulted in their first win of the season.  Once the team had the lead they definitely appeared to play with more confidence than as seen during the first two games of the season.

Greg Mauldin scored at 16:06 of the first period to give the Lake Erie Monsters the 1-0 lead to end the first period.

Michael Ryan scored a goal assisted by Corey Tropp at 5:08 of the 2nd to tie the game 1-1.

TJ Brennan scored the game winning goal on the power play at 16:54 of the second period, assists went to Corey Tropp and Michael Ryan.  Brennan scored the goal going to the net.

Derek Whitmore scored his first goal of the season for the Amerks at 7:38 of the third, assisted by Nick Crawford and Mark Voakes.

Updated: Credit for the goal was changed and given to Zack Kassian, assisted by Derek Whitmore and Nick Crawford.

I wish I could give more details on the goals but missed each of them and the Lake Erie Monsters don’t believe in showing replays of anything.

David Leggio [...]Read More

Amerks Home Opener had Some Awesome and Some Booing

Amerks Home Opener had Some Awesome and Some Booing

The game that was played for 60 minutes on the ice pretty much speaks for itself.  The team was outplayed by a more skilled Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins team.  Going into further detail really won’t accomplish much and does anyone really want to discuss it further?  It’s only two games into the season, there’s absolutely no reason to hit a panic button but there’s reason for concern.  Time to get into the good things before the negative..

The Rochester Americans home opener overall though had a great atmosphere to it.  There were fans in the building early for the current Amerks players to walk the red carpet and then for the alumni to arrive.  Many of the alumni were seen hanging out throughout the game and intermissions with fans chatting.

The Moose and Sabretooth were hanging out signing autographs and taking pictures together.

The new video scoreboard that had a cost of over 200k was impressive (even if it didn’t show any shots on goal).  The video quality was improved and just added to the overall atmosphere.

It was also great running into people that you only see during hockey season and catching up on life.

The home opener had that special [...]Read More

Amerks Gameday Notes, Injuries, Lineup and Attendance

Amerks Gameday Notes, Injuries, Lineup and Attendance

As of writing this there’s about 8,700 tickets sold for tonights game and everyone is aware of the excitement and anticipation for the game tonight.  The players are even aware that it’s their time to shine and prove to fans there’s a reason for them to keep coming back for more after the home opener.

“It’s real important for us to go out and showcase ourselves and showcase that we have a good team and a team worth cheering for,” Derek Whitmore said.  ”Rochester loves a winning hockey teams and they’ll support you, it’s almost like an audition for us to showcase what we have.”

As expected, Drew MacIntyre will be the starting goalie for the Amerks in tonights game.  Once the Penguins finish their morning skate will try and post an update with their goalie as well.

The latest short term injury for the Amerks is defenseman Dennis Persson.  He has a lower body injury from earlier this week in practice and is day to day.

With Persson and Drew Schiestel out of the lineup it gives Joe Finley and Nick Crawford a chance to step in and show they’re just as deserving to be in the lineup.  Matt [...]Read More

Amerks Start the Season Tonight at Bulldogs

Amerks Start the Season Tonight at Bulldogs

The wait is finally over, the Rochester Americans will begin the 2011-2012 season tonight on the road against the Hamilton Bulldogs.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:00pm in Copps Coliseum, you can listen to the game on 1280 WHTK or visit ahllive.com and pay $6.99.

A lot has happened in the off season.  The Buffalo Sabres bought the Amerks (read here, and here, and here).  Terry Pegula wrote a letter with the goal of winning a Calder Cup.  They signed free agent goaltender Drew MacIntyre to lead from the net.  Derek Whitmore and Colin Stuart were signed to continue to be leaders on the offense.  Former Amerk and Buffalo Sabre Michael Ryan was also signed to add a scoring touch.  Oh and season tickets are only $10 per game.  There’s a lot more as well but that’s just a start.

As fans we’re anxious to get the season started and so are the players.

From today’s Democrat and Chronicle:

However, after a month of nothing but greaseboards, video and drills, it gets a little old. So forgive the Amerks if they’re just a bit anxious tonight for the first real puck drop of their [...]Read More

Video and Updates from Amerks Morning Practice

Video and Updates from Amerks Morning Practice

The Amerks spent a lot of time during practice today working on full line drills, really getting into game day mode.  One line that appeared to be getting more time than others was Derek Whitmore, Travis Turnbull and Zack Kassian.  Some other line combinations were Michael Ryan, Colin Stuart and Mark Voakes.. Marcus Foligno and Phil Varone were often paired up with a rotating right winger.. Colin Stuart was also paired with Corey Tropp and Michael Ryan as well.   I’ll get a better look on Friday morning at the different lines and who seems to be sticking together.

On the defensive side, Brayden McNabb and Joe Finley, Nick Crawford and Shaone Morrisonn, Drew Schiestel and TJ Brennan (Brennan also worked with Alex Biega) were all often paired up.  At times Finley also worked with Morrisonn and Biega.

What does all of that really tell us?  They’re still working on creating lines ahead of the first game of the season.  Derek Whitmore and Zack Kassian seemed to be the two players always on the same line with a different center.

Maxime Legault and Paul Szczechura were the only players that I noticed were not on the ice.  Kyle Bocheck also [...]Read More
