Amerks Announce Clear Day Roster

March 12, 2009 - By

On Thursday afternoon the Rochester Americans announce their 22 man clear day roster for the remainder of the 08/09 regular season.  It’s yet another sign that the season is quickly coming to a close.  It’s sad that hockey season is winding down, but exciting to REALLY start looking forward to next season.  That’s a whole other topic.

No surprises with the Amerks lineup.  If the team had any plans of making the playoffs this would be a lot more interesting.

Here’s the roster:

Mike Brodeur and Tyler Plante; defensemen Michael Caruso, Jason Garrison, Rory Fitzpatrick, Keaton Ellerby, Jordan Henry, Peter Aston, Franklin MacDonald, and forwards Janis Sprukts, Drew Larman, Stefan Meyer, Michael Duco, Tanner Glass, Dan Collins, Karl Stewart, Shawn Matthias, Kenndal McArdle, Michal Repik, David Brine, Randall Gelech and Riley Emmerson. Forwards Jarret Lukin, Kyle Hagel, Andrew Sweetland, Judd Blackwater and Jacob Micflikier currently remain in residence.

The rest of the AHL also announced their rosters as well.

Amerks Post Game Injury Report

February 20, 2009 - By

The Rochester Americans beat the Hershey Bears on Friday night but they also lost two more players to injury.  Jacob Micflikier hurt his ankle in the second period and had to be helped off the ice.  He returned to the bench a short time later to play a few more shifts, but did not return in the third period.  Rory Fitzpatrick hurt his knee as well during the game and will not be playing in Toronto on Saturday afternoon.  Benoit Groulx was unsure if it was the same knee he had surgery on in December.

Here’s the rest of the injured players:

  • Drew Larman – rib injury
  • Tanner Glass – shoulder
  • Kenndal McArdle – shoulder
  • Kyle Hagel – shoulder
  • Luke Beaverson – concussion

We’ll know more after the weekend about the extent of the injuries to Micflikier and Fitzpatrick.  Drew Larman is expecting to be back within the next week.  The remaining injured players (Glass, McArdle, Hagel, Beaverson) are out with no timeline that I know of for returning.

Janis Sprukts Returns and Amerks Defeat Wolves

February 12, 2009 - By

The Rochester Americans have started out a five game road trip with their second straight win, tonight coming against the Chicago Wolves with a 4-3 victory.

Janis Sprukts didn’t fly in to Chicago until around 2:30pm and from there he still had to get to the arena for the game.  One would think flying half away around the world would cause some serious jet lag, but that wasn’t the case tonight.

Sprukts made his presence known early in the game with a great penalty kill along with David Brine working hard to clear the puck.

The first period saw the Amerks and Wolves trade goals with the period ending tied at two.

Drew Larman scored the the first goal of the game for the Amerks after he received an excellent pass from Repik from the right wing side.  Once the puck hit his stick he easily put it into the net.

Karl Stewart was called for a roughing penalty at 9:04 of the first that eventually led to the Wolves power play goal by Riley Holzapfel to gain the 2-1 lead.

As a play was about to be called for icing Stewart continued into a Wolves player and plowed him [...]Read More

Tyler Plante Leads Amerks Out of Last Place

February 11, 2009 - By

The Rochester Americans have finally gotten themselves out of last place in the American Hockey League led by Tyler Plante with a 4-1 win on Tuesday night on the road against the Iowa Chops.  The game was further evidence of a Jekyll and Hyde type of team that the Amerks have become.  The Amerks played smart hockey with very few mistakes, tallying a power play goal, successfully killing four power play chances for the chops, and even scoring a short handed goal.

Heading into tonights game the Amerks trailed the Springfield Falcons by only one point in the standings, so the two points gained by the Amerks tonight puts them ahead by one.  Both teams play again on Wednesday night, but hopefully now that the Amerks have gotten out of the cellar they’ll continue with the good and finally stop with the poor performances.

The performance by Tyler Plante was outstanding as he made 33 saves in the game for his second win of the season.  Mike Brodeur was expected to start the game tonight but isn’t quite ready to return from his groin injury.  What seemed like a tough scenario having Brodeur out injured has turned into an excellent [...]Read More

Plante Returns; Tuesday Morning Practice and Injury Updates

February 3, 2009 - By

Good morning from the spacious Blue Cross Arena for the Rochester Americans Tuesday morning practice, this place feels like the worlds best hockey arena after watching so many practices recently at the igloo known as ESL Centre.

The Amerks are back on the ice preparing for Wednesday nights game against the Rockford IceHogs.  Former Amerk Sean McMorrow is playing for the IceHogs, possible first period bout for Emmerson?  We’ll have to wait and see!

The groin injury suffered by Mike Brodeur does not appear to be too serious.  With any luck a miracle will happen and he’ll fully recover in time for the teams long road trip next week.  The team won’t be taking any chances in rushing his return to the ice.  The doctors as well as Brodeur will have to have full confidence that his groin is healed, it’s not an injury a goalie can return from and not be at 100%.

Tyler Plante has been called up from the Dayton Bombers for the second goaltender.  Whether that means he’ll be the backup to Beckford-Tseu, or Beckford-Tseu will be backing him up is unclear.  Our bet is on Tyler Plante making the start, it’ll be his opportunity to [...]Read More

Thursday Gameday: Amerks vs Crunch

January 22, 2009 - By

The Rochester Americans are back at home tonight for an odd Thursday night home game against thruway rivals Syracuse Crunch, game time is at 7:05pm.  The Amerks lost the first three games this season against the Crunch but have won the last two.  The last win was back on January 9th, final score was 3-1.

The team has won six of its last eight, including two road wins this past weekend against the Manchester Monarchs and Providence Bruins.  Looking at the past 15 games they are 10-4-0-1.  Something strange is happening here in Rochester, the team is creeping closer to a .500 record.

The Crunch are coming off of a 6-3 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs on Monday afternoon, they have won three of their past four.

Goaltender Mike Brodeur, who has started 17 of the last 19 games for Rochester, and will start again tonight, boasts a 12-4-1 record in 17 games between the pipes for the Amerks. His 2.07 goals-against average and .933 save percentage presently rank him third and second among AHL netminders, respectively. Further, his two shutouts tie him for fourth in the league.

The game will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK, whtk.com [...]Read More

Skate With The Players 11-04-2008

November 5, 2008 - By

My husband and I took our son to the annual Season Ticket Holder’s Skate with the Players tonight at Blue Cross Arena.  Last year I had a lot of fun at this event, but my son was just a little too young and a lot too shy to go with us.  I personally think this is one of the best events the Amerks’ put on throughout the year.

From 6:00-7:00 p.m. the veteran players were on the ice.  This included Rory Fitzpatrick, Janis Sprukts, Drew Larman, Stefan Meyer, Peter Aston, Tanner Glass, Dan Collins, Kenndal McArdle, Jordan Henry, Doug O’Brien, Chris Beckford-Tseu, Franklin MacDonald, David Brine and Tyler Plante.

Karl Stewart was out with the first group.  He wasn’t skating because of his knee injury.  But, he stayed on the bench the whole time and was pleased to talk with whomever sat down next to him.  This was the first tiem I had gotten the chance to talk to Karl and he is a very nice and passionate guy.  He said his knee injury is an old one that flares up sometimes and he just needs to rest it and it is fine again.

Not even two minutes after we [...]Read More

Amerks Win Their First Game of the Year…The Hard Work Pays Off

October 25, 2008 - By

The Rochester Americans won their first game of the season tonight against the Quad City Flames in a 5-4 victory.  Although the game really came down to the bitter end, the players put in 110% effort all night and their hard work finally payed off.

I have been at a lot of practices already this year and as you have read in my articles, I think the coaching staff is doing a far superior job than the last few years.  And I think Benoit’s “no screwing around” attitude has really given this team the need to work exceptionally hard for him.  But, I digress…

The first period of the game, the players came out to play on both sides of the ice.  Back and forth the puck went all period.  No quality shots were taken by either team and the period ended 0-0.  The Amerks were showing that they weren’t going to be taking the game lightly though.  They were immediately giving out hard hits on the boards to anyone, no matter what the size of the player.

The Flames got on the board first in the second period.  The Amerks wouldn’t stand for that for long though.  [...]Read More

Collect Amerk Player Photo's

October 21, 2008 - By

If you were able to attend the Amerks fun fest you were able to collect glossy phoot’s from each of the players.  For anyone who’s into collecting autographs and memorabilia these are excellent.  Every player has a signature pad that is a stack of the glossy photo’s of themselves that they can easily autograph and hand out to fans.

Even though the team is still struggling on the ice, things like this are one of those new items available to make it all a better “fan experience.”  The best experience comes from winning games, but we’re trying not to overlook the other improvements that are around this season as well.

Hopefully the team will be able to get trading cards made in time this season as well.

I’d expect that players will have them available as they make appearances throughout the season.  Check back to the site often and we’ll keep you updated on those appearances!
