Amerks Getting Back on Track with 5-3 Win Over B-Sens

December 28, 2009 - By

After a month long skid for the Rochester Americans I believe that things are headed back in the right direction.  The Amerks won their second game of the weekend by defeating the Binghamton Senators 5-3 in front of 4,367 in downtown Rochester on Sunday evening.  There are still some concerns, but the lineup that has been depleted by call ups and injuries seems to be finding it’s way.

The AHL has 43 transactions for the Amerks just in the month of December and there’s still a few days left.  That is a lot of change.  Within the month of December was also a number of injuries, the tail end of a six game road trip, a hectic travel schedule, and very few regular practices.  Those are not excuses, they are facts that impact consistency and chemistry.  It’s only two wins, but they’re wins that will give the team a much needed boost of confidence.

It also helps to have Jeff Taffe back in the lineup playing on a line with Jamie Johnson and Michal Repik.  Those three players combined for a total of six points on Sunday.  The two assists for Johnson gives him 32 points [...]Read More

Amerks Win Seventh Game this Season vs Crunch

December 16, 2009 - By

The second period may have been one of the worst this season for the Amerks but they were able to hold on and after 60 minutes left the ice with a win and two more points in the standings.

It was the seventh win this season for the Amerks against the cross state rival Syracuse Crunch.  The only element missing from the game was the typical chirping, cheap shots, and fights between the two teams.

Mike Duco opened the scoring for the Amerks at 6:52 of the first period.  Jordan Henry had just gotten out of the box and fed a pass to Jamie Johnson who brought the puck across the blue line.  Johnson was stopped in his tracks by a Crunch player, passed the puck to Duco who let a shot go through some legs and beat Dan Taylor five hole.

Brady Calla scored his first goal of the season (pictured) and it was also the game winning goal.  It was the type of goal that’s been talked about with players stepping up and contributing.  Jimmy Bonneau did a great job getting Calla the puck to score.

Nick Tarnasky led the Amerks with two goals [...]Read More

Dylan Hunter Brings Bad Karma; Amerks Lose 2-1

December 12, 2009 - By

The headline sounds like one I would have written two seasons ago during one of the worst seasons the Amerks have ever played.  The game we witnessed tonight resembled one of those games more than it did the Rochester Americans of the 2009/10 season.  I don’t really blame Dylan Hunter and don’t really think that he brought bad karma, but it makes for a good headline.

I don’t get the sense that Amerks fans are hitting the panic button yet, but signs of frustration are part of every conversation and for good reason.  The Panthers called up Michal Repik after the game which leaves the team short another player.  This is a shell of a team we saw a month ago.

They gave a good effort but fell short.

“I thought we were a second behind,” is what Benoit Groulx said after the game.  I think that line sums it up perfectly.  That’s all it takes to decide any sporting event, sometimes even less than a second.  That’s what happens when you go from a team that was playing four consistent lines to playing two.

The game was only decided by one goal but an early [...]Read More

GDT: Finally, A Home Game; Amerks vs Heat Friday Tonight

December 11, 2009 - By

Thankfully that road trip is over and after two weeks the Amerks finally have another home game.  The Abbotsford Heat travel to Rochester tonight to play the Amerks at 7:05pm at Blue Cross Arena.  That ends the longest drought of the season between home games.

The Amerks wrapped up a road trip this past Sunday night with a 2-1 win in Abbotsford to end their six game road trip where they went 3-3.  There were some ups and downs with the road trip and you can read about them here, but what’s done is done.  It’s a new day and a new game.

The team will be a little bit different than what we last saw.  Players that will not be in the lineup that were at the last home game were Mike York (personal leave), Shawn Matthias (called up), Jeff Taffe (called up), and Mike Duco (called up).  David Brine has been out with a rib injury, not sure on his status.

In their place we’ll see a new face and and some familiar faces.  The new face will be Jordan Fox who was signed to a PTO from the Wheeling Nailers of the [...]Read More

Dylan Hunter Returns; York Not Injured

December 9, 2009 - By

We all know that the Amerks are in need of some warm and healthy bodies to fill out the roster (updates on injuries/callups here) but what was not expected was for Dylan Hunter to be a player brought back to help out.  Hunter has been playing for the Utah Grizzlies this season who posted the news on their web site Thursday afternoon.

What may also be surprising is that Hunter is currently 12th in the ECHL in scoring with 10 goals and 13 assists in 19 games, six of those goals being scored on the power play.  Last season with the Portland Pirates he only had three goals and 13 assists in 45 games.

He played two seasons with the Amerks from 2006-2008 with the 2nd of the two seasons being his best.  During the 07/08 season which was one of the worst in Amerks history Hunter found a way to score 20 goals and assist on 27 others.  That was the last season of the dual affiliation between the Sabres and Panthers.  It was also the season that no one knew what the future would hold for the team.

The last time he [...]Read More

Top 10 Read Posts of 2008 on Lets Go Amerks

December 31, 2008 - By

It seems like Top 10 posts are the popular thing to do, and why not, looks back at what people seemed to find the most interesting.  In 2008 the Amerks at one point were a team with an uncertain future due to a lack of ownership.  That was solved, here’s hoping that “new day for a Rochester tradition” is accomplished in 2009 with a successful team on the ice.  We’ll be out of town for a couple days, in absence of covering Wednesday mornings practice here’s a list of the top 10 most read posts on this site in 2008:

10. Amerks Open Camp, Live at ESL!

The team opened training camp at the ESL Centre in Henrietta on September 30, 2008.. the day that the Edmonton Oilers claimed Steve MacIntyre off of waivers from the Panthers.  “Big Mac” was already on the ice for camp when he was pulled off and given the news.

9. Featured Player: Adam Dennis

This is something we need to do more of, it’s the only reason I can think that Adam Dennis and Dylan Hunter were considered amongst the top posts of the year.  It’s not like either [...]Read More

Featured Player: Dylan Hunter

December 21, 2007 - By

  #19 Dylan Hunter
Center
05/21/1985
5’11”
190 lbs
Quebec City, Quebec

Dylan Hunter has great positional instinct and is great when it comes to using his strength to dig in the opponent’s corner.  He isn’t afraid to work hard and give his all when competing.

His junior career was spent entirely with the London Knights.  He played there for five seasons (from the 2001-02 season until the 2005-06 season) where he racked up an amazing 369 points in 315 games (106 goals, 263 assists).Â

In 2005, The London Knights started their season off with 31 wins in a row that year.  Dylan helped propel the team to the OHL Championship and later the team won the Memorial Cup which is the highest honor for a junior team.  Along with David Bolland and Rob Schremp, Hunter was a part of one of the best lines in the Canadian Hockey League.

While with the Knights, Dylan was a three-time OHL all-star.  During the 2004-05 season, he played in the Canada/Russia Challenge.  During his last season, he was named the team’s Best Defensive Forward, the Booster Club Player [...]Read More
