New Teams for Johnson, Bonneau and MacIntyre

New Teams for Johnson, Bonneau and MacIntyre

Three players that made an impression in a Rochester Americans uniform last season have now moved on and found jobs with other teams.

Jimmy Bonneau signed a one year deal with the Hamilton Bulldogs.  Bonneau made headlines in the world of hockey fights last season when he fought Jon Mirasty four times in two games in October 2009.  Tough player who stands up for his team and not afraid to back down from anyone.

Jamie Johnson signed with the Detroit Red Wings along with Chris Minard and goalie Joey MacDonald.  All three were signed for North Division rival Grand Rapids Griffins and immediately made that team better.

Steve MacIntyre returned to the Edmonton Oilers with a one year deal, the same team that claimed him off of waivers in 2008 and then waived him in 2009.  He’ll have a great chance at cracking the Oilers lineup.

Highlight of the season was seeing MacIntyre knockout Jeremy Yablonski:

Best of luck elsewhere guys and don’t beat up on the Amerks too much when you’re an opponent!

Oklahoma City Barons are the Newest AHL Team

May 20, 2010 - By

The American Hockey League officially welcomed it’s newest team into the league today with the announcement of the Oklahoma City Barons.  The Barons will be the affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers who in recent years have had their prospects playing for the Springfield Falcons.

The Barons will likely join the West Division along with the Wolves, Stars, IceHogs, Admirals, Rivermen, Rampage and Aeros.  I would be surprised to see any other division changes occur which means the Amerks will continue to play in the North Division/Western Conference.

Other known changes for the 2010/11 season will be the Albany River Rats moving to Charlotte.  The Lowell Devils are moving to Albany.  The Springfield Falcons will be the new affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Syracuse Crunch will be the new affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks.

Here’s a part of the press release announcing the team:

“The choice of the name Barons symbolizes many aspects of the spirit of adventure and entrepreneurship that exists in Oklahoma,” Funk continued. “The city of Oklahoma City continues its growth on a local, national and international scale in large part to the entrepreneurial spirit and vision of its citizens.”

Oklahoma City, Charlotte and Other Possible AHL Affiliation Changes

February 9, 2010 - By

The next six months are going to be for the American Hockey League with teams being sold, teams being moved, and affiliation changes taking place.  This post could become confusing with all of the changes and possibilities that could take place.

One thing is for certain is that the affiliation between the Rochester Americans and Florida Panthers will last through the 2010/2011 season.  Talks have not yet started about a possible extension but it was recently reported in the Democrat and Chronicle that both parties have until November 2010 to work something out.

American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews announced today that the league’s Board of Governors has approved the relocation of the AHL franchise owned by the Edmonton Oilers from Edmonton, Alta., to Oklahoma City, Okla., to begin play there in the fall of 2010.

No, there is not currently an AHL team in Edmonton.  The Edmonton Oilers are one of many NHL teams that owns the rights to an AHL franchise so in a sense they are relocating what they own but has been dormant from Edmonton to Oklahoma City.  The still unnamed team will play at the Cox Convention Center.

"Big Mac" Is Ready to Play Some Hockey.. and Fight

November 18, 2009 - By

I have not been around the Rochester Americans for very long but I do have to wonder if Steve MacIntyre is one of the biggest player to ever wear an Amerks uniform.  Big Mac as he’s also known stands at about 6′ 6″ and at least 265 pounds.  There are other players that are tall, but this guy is just big.  Seeing this guy on the ice and standing next to him is intimidating.

It’s hard to believe that after the first regular season game the Amerks released Jimmy Bonneau and we were concerned about the team going forward without an “enforcer.”  Here we are after 16 games and Jimmy Bonneau has made a case for himself to be ranked as a heavyweight and now Steve MacIntyre has joined the team.

Steve MacIntyre was a big signing in July 2008 by the Florida Panthers for the Amerks.  He was signed to a two year two way contract with the intention of him playing in Rochester.  That quickly changed on the first day of Amerks training camp September 30, 2008.  When the Panthers sent MacIntyre to the Amerks he had to clear waivers, which is 24 hours.  [...]Read More

Trevor Gillies Signs with Bridgeport

October 2, 2009 - By

The Amerks were hit with a surprise left this afternoon when they learned that Trevor Gillies had signed with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.  As of this morning they said they were negotiating with Gillies and thought things were going well.  I guess Gillies didn’t see it that way.

Trevor Gillies exchanging words with Kevin Harvey of the Syracuse Crunch

The team had hoped to have a real heavyweight heading into opening night and for the second season in a row that hope has come crashing down at the last minute.  Last year Steve MacIntyre was claimed off of waivers by the Edmonton Oilers just before the deadline.

Jimmy Bonneau was signed to a PTO contract on Friday morning so the team will have someone in the lineup that can patrol the ice and fight.  James DeLory is still with the team as well and he’s hoping to get the chance to prove himself.

It’d be interesting if they called Mike Sgroi back in to give him another look.

Is this disappointing?  Yes.  But it’s not as if the Amerks don’t have any muscle on the team.  Jimmy Bonneau may not be a heavyweight fighter but [...]Read More

Emmerson, Dadonov, and other AHL News

September 3, 2009 - By

The Amerks are expected to release their training camp roster within a week, so until that happens we’re short on Amerks news but plenty of news from other places.

** Evgeni or Evgeny (depending on the day of the week it seems) Dadonov has officially signed his entry level contract with the Florida Panthers and it was accepted by the NHL.  He hasn’t played a game yet for the organization but he’s been in the news more than anyone else.

** Riley Emmerson signed a contract with the Springfield Falcons, affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers.  He improved throughout last season and earned plenty of ice time for an enforcer.  He never backed down from a challenge and always put up a good fight.  There’s pleny of videos of Emmersons fights in the video section of this site.  The Oilers signed Steve MacIntrye last season off of waivers from the Panthers/Amerks and this season they’ve taken someone else.  The Amerks had not shown any interest in Emmerson.

** 29 Teams in 29 Days is a series that Chris Rahn (a writer for Inside Hockey) just started over on his site about American Hockey League news.  He has [...]Read More

Off Season Changes in the AHL

August 3, 2009 - By

Just in case you’ve been enjoying the summer, here’s what has been going on around the American Hockey League in terms of changes in cities, affiliations, divisions, and rules.

New Cities / New Team

The Quad City Flames moved from Moline, Illinois to Abbotsford, British Columbia and and are now called the Abbotsford Heat.  They are still the affiliate of the Calgary Flames.

The Philadelphia Phantoms moved from Philadelphia to Glens Falls, NY and are now known as the Adirondack Phantoms.  They remain the affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers.

A new team joined the league called the Texas Stars located in Cedar Park, Texas.  Cedar Park is about a half hour North of Austin.  They are the affiliate of the Dallas Stars.  The team was granted limited membership into the league.  The limited membership is conditioned on the completed purchase of an existing AHL franchise within one year, by April 2010.

The Iowa Chops was involuntarily suspended by the league for the 2009/2010 season.  “The Iowa franchise has unfortunately been unable to remedy certain violations of the provisions of the league’s Constitution and By-Laws,” said American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews.

Oklahoma City could be the home of [...]Read More
