Top Six Amerks Stories That Needed a Followup

August 28, 2009 - By

I’ve posted a number of stories about the Rochester Americans this summer and found six that needed a follow up prior to the new season starting.  If anyone ever comes across something I’ve posted or said in the past that needs correcting please share.

1. This summer the Amerks HAVE done everything they said they were going to do.  A lot of people have been skeptical about the team and changes that were announced at the end of last season and for good reason.  I believe that this organization wants to be open and honest which they have been.

2. The Moose is NOT going anywhere.  I’ve talked to a few people that there was talks at some point but it was probably just one of those things tossed around.  Bottom line – he’s safe as a mascot.

3. Andrew Peters is NOT signing with the Amerks.  There’s no room for him.  The Amerks have six veterans currently signed right now which is the limit in the AHL.  Could that change if one of the current players earns a full time spot in Florida and Peters still needs a job?  Of course, but not likely (although I [...]Read More

Amerks Summer News Stories, Getting Caught Up

August 12, 2009 - By

It has been a busy summer for the Rochester Americans with a lot of great news and a couple of stories that have generated some bad press.  Looking at the bigger picture it has been a positive summer.  Here’s the start of “round up” type posts I’ll be doing once the season gets started.  There’s always a lot of news but not always enough to make an individual post for.  They’re also a great way for people to get caught up that may not read this site or the news all that often.

Here’s what has happened so far this summer:

** Training camp for the Amerks has not even been announced yet but the doesn’t mean some Amerks aren’t back on the ice already.  The Rochester Americans Summer Hockey Camps are underway at ESL being led by Amerks assistant coach Jason Cipolla.  It’s great to see so many kids sporting the Amerks logo playing hockey, a sign that the season is close.

** Matt Duffy is still an unsigned draft pick of the Florida Panthers.  He was drafted in the fourth round and #104 overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.  When his season ended with the University of [...]Read More

Amerks Mascot The Moose in Trouble? E5

July 31, 2009 - By

The mascot for the Rochester Americans, The Moose, could be in jeopardy of being shipped back into the wild.  There have been rumors floating around that The Moose could be replaced by R. Thunder as the teams mascot.

With the recent news this week that Fred Costello would not be returning after 32 years and the news back in May that Jody Gage was no longer going to be General Manager after 14 years it’s not really all that surprising that The Moose could possibly be next.

The first thought about The Moose being released was that there’s no way it could ever happen.  I started asking around and continued to hear that the idea either was brought up or is even still an option.  Over the past couple of years I’ve tried to stay away from reporting rumors, but this one ranks an E5 on Eklunds scale.  I’ve sent numerous emails to people in the front office to comment about this but no one has replied.  I know that others have sent emails as well but and did not receive a reply.

I held off on writing this hoping someone would say, “that’s a crazy idea.”  But apparently it [...]Read More

More Bad Press for Amerks

July 28, 2009 - By

The news on Monday that Fred Costello would not be returning as organist for the Rochester Americans did not have to be that big of a story but it’s turned into one.  The reason?  The way Amerks President Lewis Staats is being portrayed as handling the situation.

It also doesn’t help that this made the front page of this mornings sports section in the Democrat and Chronicle.

This quote in the D&C from Costello sums up the situation, “It’s not the fact that they made a move. It’s how I was told.”

Every sports fan in Rochester knows Fred Costello from Amerks and Rochester Red Wings games for playing the organ.  He plays the music.  That’s the way it is and has always been.

John Catalano, the Amerks vice president of production and marketing was also quoted in the D&C saying, “We realize this is not a popular decision, but sometimes unpopular decisions need to be made.”

When an unpopular decision like this is going to be made it needs to be handled a little more delicately.  All one has to do is look at the comments attached to the article in the Democrat and Chronicle.

If the team had [...]Read More
