Gameday: Amerks at Grand Rapids, First Round Home Ice With Win

April 7, 2010 - By

A week ago the Rochester Americans clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2007, tonight they can clinch home ice advantage in the first round with a win against the Grand Rapids Griffins.  Tyler Plante should get the start again tonight as he has been on a hot streak lately playing the best hockey of his pro career.  The game plan on the board in the Amerks locker room should be simple, play 60 minutes like they have been doing and good things will happen.

The team they’ll face in the first round is still up in the air between the Manitoba Moose and Abbotsford Heat.  The Moose won their game on Tuesday night pulling within two points of the Heat.  The preferred team to play would be the Abbotsford Heat, even though the team would have to travel across the country.

The Amerks finish up their season at home on Friday night against the Toronto Marlies and on the road in Syracuse on Saturday.  Playoff tickets are also on sale and the tentative dates tossed around for games 1 and 2 (assuming Amerks get home ice) will be Thursday April 15th and Saturday April 17th.

Gameday: Amerks at Cleveland, Thoughts from Groulx and Johnson

March 24, 2010 - By

There’s only 10 games left in the regular season and that sense of excitement and urgency around this Amerks team heading into the final push for the playoffs still seems to be missing.  They have a challenge on their hands tonight as they take on the Lake Erie Monsters on the road, a place they’ve already lost three times this season.

The Moose got within two points of the Amerks with a win over the Bulldogs on Tuesday and they play again tonight.  The Hamilton Bulldogs have first place in the North Division locked up.  The real battle now is for the second spot and home ice advantage in the first round.  That is still up for grabs to the Amerks, Moose, and Heat.

With the Monsters and Marlies both playing decent hockey recently they are two teams that could find a way to sneak in as well.  Three out of the final 10 games for the Amerks is against the Marlies.  With other games against Hershey, Hamilton, and Binghamton it could be time to really hit the panic button.

After practice on Tuesday when Benoit Groulx was asked about getting into playoff mode here’s his response:

Gameday: Amerks Host Rats, Looking to Extend Streak

March 12, 2010 - By

It’s hard to believe that there is only six home games out of the remaining 16 games for the Amerks. The Amerks are home tonight to host the Albany River Rats and looking to extend their winning streak to five games.

The Amerks have taken over second place again in the North Division and will be looking to hold on to that spot. This season has been a roller coaster ride of wins, losses, injuries, streaks, frustration and everything in between. The message seems to be going through the locker room and the players have stepped up to the challenge.

Tyler Plante will be getting the start again in net tonight after winning two games last weekend against Portland and Toronto.

The game starts at 7:05pm and it’s another night of $1 beers and dogs (between 6 and 8pm).

If anyone has noticed changes to the web site or problems with the RSS feed I apologize, I’ve been dealing with some technical issues. The site is undergoing a gradual redesign.

See you at the game!

Gameday: Amerks at Phantoms, Race Towards Playoffs

March 5, 2010 - By

Short and sweet, the run for the playoffs starts this weekend. There’s no more excuses. There’s no time left to blame road trips or even personal gripes with anyone. With only 18 games remaining it’s time to see what this Amerks team is capable of and that includes the coaching staff and players.

The North Division is tight and continues to become tighter with every game played. Hamilton has the clear lead in the division and that does not look like it will change. Every team is looking to get better so it’s time for this team to step it up.

The Amerks are on the road tonight against the Adirondack Phantoms. The last time these two teams played on February 10th the Phantoms won the game 3-1. Rochester won the two previous games.

Graham Mink is not playing tonight, he’s staying in Rochester because his wife is expected to give birth anytime. Daniel Steiner has sat out the two previous games and will be looking to show how valuable he is to the team when he’s in the lineup.

The Amerks also play Saturday in Toronto and then on Sunday in Buffalo against the Portland Pirates.

Gameday: USA vs Canada and Amerks vs B-Sens Today at BCA

February 28, 2010 - By

Short and sweet… USA vs Canada starting at 3pm on the scoreboard at Blue Cross Arena followed by the Amerks vs Senators starting at 6:30pm.  It’ll be a fun day of hockey in downtown Rochester.

The video quality may not be the best on the arena scoreboard but it’s the experience that will be fun.

The Heat win on Saturday gave them two points to jump ahead of the Amerks in the standings.  The Heat have the day off today so it’s a great opportunity for the Amerks to gain two much needed points.

See you at the arena at 3pm!

Amerks Break Friday Night Curse; Gameday at Hamilton

February 27, 2010 - By

The Rochester Americans finally broke their Friday night curse with a home win against the Grand Rapids Griffins.  Their previous home win on a Friday night dated back to November 27th.  That’s about the time the season took a slump, slide, or you could even call it evening out.  A Friday night win gets a three game weekend kicked off with a sense of confidence instead of doubt.

The difference maker in Fridays game was Mike York.  It’s now obvious the team really missed him while he was out of the lineup (do the list of possible reasons even matter anymore?  I don’t think so).  Mike Duco scored a power play goal at 3:26 of the first period on the power play to give the Amerks an early 1-0 lead.  The goal was possible because York had faked a shot and instead sent the pass over to Duco who put it in the net.  After the game Duco said that he knew York saw him so he was expecting the pass.

Jordan Henry scored the third goal of the game for the Amerks at 10:51 of the second period on the power play that gave the Amerks a 3-1 lead.  [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks Host Griffins; Amerks News from this Week

February 26, 2010 - By

The Amerks host the Grand Rapids Griffins tonight and it’s pretty simple, they need to win a Friday night home game!  The Amerks have not won a Friday night home game since November 27th when they barely held on to beat the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.  The only game on a Friday they have won was a 6-5 shootout win over the Hamilton Bulldogs on January 15th.

We’ve seen glimpses over the past two weeks of a team that can play a solid game and can find ways to win.  The goal scored by Mike York with a minute left on the clock last Sunday to tie the game and then the shootout win brought a level of excitement to the bench that has not been seen in a while.  Some things came up and I wasn’t able to write about the game but check out this excellent recap at Hockey O-Zone.

The easiest way to notice the fun level is by the rally caps that were put on by players on the bench.  Tyler Plante started it by flipping his cap (pictured) backwards and inside out.  Once the shootout started a handful [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony; vs Pirates

February 21, 2010 - By

The Rochester Americans will hold their 23rd Hall of Fame induction ceremony this afternoon inducting Randy Cunneyworth, Jim Wiemer, and Kent Weisbeck.  It’ll be a good day hearing great stories from some of the greats in Amerks history.

Hopefully the players and coaches will hear what’s said and take it as motivation into the game to prove that one day this years team will be considered one of the best.  It’ll be tough as the Amerks still try to find their way and the Pirates are looking to continue with their franchise record breaking winning streak.

I’m going to hold off from saying anything else and stay positive, it’s not easy to do.  We’ll see what happens today during the game.  If you feel like venting or reading about others vent you can check out this link (Amerks Management – WAKE UP!!) and this link (Has Anyone Seen Enough of these Clowns Yet?) which are posts on local message board

The on ice portion starts at 3:08 so the actual game won’t start until everything else is taken care of.  I mention that because in previous years people who have not cared [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks Look to Stop Pirates Winning Streak

February 20, 2010 - By

The last time the Rochester Americans and Portland Pirates faced off was on November 12th at HSBC Arena in Buffalo when the Pirates won 6-3 to end the Amerks bid for a franchise record 12th straight win.  The Amerks will have a chance to end the Pirates bid for their own franchise record as they go for their 11th straight win.

It’s safe to say that there is a lot on the line with this game and I think everyone knows why without me writing about it.

The Amerks lost 4-3 on Friday night against the Manitoba Moose but insist that if they play with the same effort they had they will be succesful.  It was a similar story line last Friday and Saturday and they did find a way to win, unfortunately it ended as quick as it started.

The players and coach say that if they keep up the effort they’ll start winning games regularly again.  I think fans would love to believe that but want to see the wins first, hopefully today is the start.

The Pirates were down 2-1 against the Albany River Rats but found a way to come back and [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks vs Moose, Return of Mike York

February 19, 2010 - By

There’s no doubt that the Amerks need all the help they can get on Friday night games. They have only won one out of six Friday night games in 2010, that one game was on the road in Hamilton. No one has an answer, but its something every player and coach wants to change.

Mike York will be playing tonight, he has not played since early December and has missed 33 games. Whatever the issues were are behind us, everyone is just hoping he can insert some life into a struggling team.

The Amerks are still trying to get their 2,000th franchise win, something that has eluded them for a couple weeks now. Once they do get that win the team has free tshirts they’ll be handing out. The shirts say February 2010 so the interns better hope it happens soon or they’ll be using markers to adjust every shirt.

The Moose are looking to gain more ground so we can expect them to play their best.

Puck drops at 7:05pm, see you there!

Gameday: Amerks vs Moose, Going for 2k Wins

February 16, 2010 - By

The Amerks start a five gome home stand tonight with three of the five games against North Division opponents. The division is getting closer and teams are trying to move ahead of Rochester in the standings.

Alexander Salak will get the start tonight vs the Manitoba Moose. Based on the last players out on the ice this morning Jimmy Bonneau and Jordan Henry could be healthy scratches again.

Why those two are being scratched again I have no idea. It could be discussed further but I’ll stay positive since it’s a gameday.

The game plan should be simple, stay out of the penalty box and play with the same excitement as Saturday night and good things will happen.

I did not go in the back hall way after practice but most of the local TV stations were here to probably ask about the team going for their 2,000th franchise win.

Puck drops at 7:05pm, Let’s Go Amerks!

Gameday: Amerks Host Monsters; Playoff Panic Button?

February 13, 2010 - By

After another disappointing loss on a Friday night the Amerks are back in action tonight at home versus the Lake Erie Monsters.  I’m not sure there’s any way to hype the Amerks in this game.  The Monsters have won five of six games between the two teams.  The only Amerks win was the second game of the season.  The Monsters have also outscored the Amerks 22-13.

Based on the comments after Fridays game the only thing I can think to say is that the team needs to work hard like they say and they’ll start winning again.  Hopefully they are on to something.

The stats do not paint a pretty picture for the game but I’ll be walking through the doors of Blue Cross Arena excited and hoping for the best like I always do.  The puck drops at 7:35pm, not the usual 7:05 start time.

With only 27 games remaining in the season and letters going out to season ticket holders about renewing and playoff tickets, is it time to hover our hands over the panic button?

Take a look at these stats that Kevin posted on Hockey O-Zone:

The Amerks have a 17-1 [...]Read More
