Gameday: Amerks Home vs Heat; Panther Trades

February 12, 2010 - By

Going to keep this short and sweet today, the Amerks start a three game stretch tonight with a home game against the Abbotsford Heat.  To say it’s a “must win” is probably an understatement.  The Amerks have lost the past three Friday night home games and none of the games have been exciting.  It’s a new day though and a new day for some excitement.  I hope.

The game plan should be pretty simple, play like your job is on the line.  That is if by the time the game starts some players still have a job with the Florida Panthers organization.  Randy Sexton said on Thursday night that “no one is off limits” as they try and make changes to a roster that is highly doubtful to make the playoffs.  The Panthers already made one move on Thursday trading Dominic Moore to the Montreal Canadiens for a 2nd round pick in 2011.

The pre-Olympic deadline is 3pm.  Any move could directly impact the Amerks if the Panthers need to call someone up to take the spot of a traded player or even one of the prospects here being traded.  We’ll see what happens.

Gameday: Amerks at Adirondack Phantoms 7pm

February 10, 2010 - By

There’s less than 30 games remaining in the regular season for most of the teams in the American Hockey League and the push for the playoffs is really going to start picking up.  The Rochester Americans travel to Glens Falls to take on the Adirondack Phantoms tonight at 7pm EST for the third meeting of the season between these two teams.  The last time Rochester faced an Adirondack-based AHL team (on the road)  was during the 1998-99 season against the Adirondack Red Wings before the team ceased operations

The Amerks have won both games this season (3-1 on Jan 24th and 2-1 on Jan 31st) against the Phantoms.  Neither game was one where either team ran away with the game to a clear win so this should be a competitive game.

The Amerks had what seemed like a good practice on Tuesday and then traveled to Glens Falls so they could have another gameday skate this morning.  Travel and practice time should not be an issue, this team should be ready to play a solid game.

Rochester will be without Victor Oreskovich and Brady Calla in the lineup.  Oreskovich was called up to the [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks at Lake Erie Monsters

February 3, 2010 - By

The Rochester Americans left on Tuesday afternoon for Cleveland for their game tonight against the Lake Erie Monsters, a team they have lost to four times already this season.  Out of five games this season the only one the Amerks have won was a 5-2 decision back on October 9th, the second game of the season.  The Monsters have also outscored the Amerks by a margin of 19-11.

I’d say that paints a pretty optimistic outcome for the game tonight!

Alexander Salak has not yet played against the Monsters so I would hope that he gets the start.  Plante was the winning goaltender in the only win against the Monsters this season.  He also has one of the losses along with Ryan Mior and Chris Beckford-Tseu.

The Monsters have turned their season around from last place and are currently one point out of fourth in the division.  This game is not only important for the Amerks to continue chasing the Bulldogs but also slow down the Monsters from gaining in the standings.

The team will be counting on the line of Jamie Johnson, Jeff Taffe, and Daniel Steiner who seem to be the offensive firepower.  It’d [...]Read More

Gameday: 5pm Start for Amerks at Home vs Phantoms

January 31, 2010 - By

The Adirondack Phantoms return to Rochester for the second Sunday in a row to face off against the Rochester Americans.  Last week Michal Repik and Jamie Johnson led the Amerks to a 3-1 win over the Phantoms.

Both teams are 1-1 so far this weekend.  The Amerks lost on Friday to the Rats but rebounded to win over the Marlies on Saturday.  The Phantoms defeated the Senators on Friday and then lost Saturday to the Norfolk Admirals.

A win for Rochester on Sunday and the Amerks would equal their win total from last season with 33 games still remaining on the schedule.  Sometimes it’s tough to remember how much the team has improved over the past two dismal seasons.

The Amerks are 5-2 in their last seven games and 6-4 in the last ten.

Jamie Johnson is one goal away from becoming the Amerks first 20 goal scorer for the season.  The past few seasons it took nearly 80 games to get one 20 goal scorer.

Tyler Plante got the shutout in Toronto on Saturday, will be interesting to see if he earned a second straight start or if Salak goes back in net on [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks Going for Fourth Straight vs Bulldogs

January 22, 2010 - By

The AHL All-Star break is over and it’s time to head into the final months of the 2009-2010 hockey season and the race in the North Division is going to be a close one.  The Hamilton Bulldogs started to pull away a little bit but with a three game winning streak the Amerks are back within seven points.  A three game home stand for the Amerks should be just what they need to get themselves back in the race.

There was a combined 10 regulation goals scored in the previous meeting between these two teams last week so it’ll be interesting to see if both teams really have figured each other out.  Alexander Salak and Cedrick Desjardins were both at the AHL All-Star Game this week and will be riding the momentum of that experience.  I could be wrong though and Sanford could get the start.

I would say that Graham Mink is probably for the game.  He has skated in practice for two weeks now and played fine at the All-Star game (even though there was no contact).  If he’s back in the lineup and 100% on a line with Dadonov and Taylor along with [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks @ Hamilton; Mid Season Thoughts

January 15, 2010 - By

The Amerks are back in action tonight and on the road to take on the Hamilton Bulldogs.  The Bulldogs are slowly pulling away from the pack in the North Division, much like the Amerks did earlier in the season.  In five games this season the Amerks are 3-1-1 against the Bulldogs and have outscored them 18-14.  In their most recent contest the Bulldogs defeated the Amerks in Hamilton by the score of 4-1.  The difference in this game is that the Amerks will have Alexander Salak in net.

The live chat is set to go live around 7:30pm Eastern Time at http://www.letsgoamerks.com/livechat.  Stop by to talk some hockey!

At the midway point of the season the North Division race is close with only nine points separating second and fifth place with the Lake Erie Monsters quickly rising in the standings.  As we’ve seen through the first 40 games of the season a lot of things can quickly change which will make the remaining 40 even more exciting with so much on the line.

And that leads us to my mid season thoughts on the Rochester Americans.  There are a number of reasons to be optimistic [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks @ WB/S Penguins at 7:05pm 1/2/10

January 2, 2010 - By

The Amerks are back in action tonight on the road against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at 7:05pm and looking to end a two game losing streak.

Rochester is coming off of a 5-1 loss to the Lake Erie Monsters on New Years Eve and a 4-1 loss the night before against the Hamilton Bulldogs. The Amerks are 5-9-1 since they last played the Pens on November 27th winning that game 4-3. The Amerks had a 4-0 lead after two periods and sat back as the Pens scored three third period goals to make it close. After the game the Amerks were 18-2-1 and getting ready for the long road trip.

It’s easy to look back at the game and notice things changed. After that game the players talked about taking it easy the second half of that game as they looked towards the long trip. A lot has happened since that game I think mentally as well as injuries and call ups. The team has also had very few practices that has hurt chemistry and the ability to try and reconnect.

The Penguins are coming off of a 3-2 loss on Friday night but as Pens beat [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks vs Bulldogs, Battle for 1st in North Division

December 20, 2009 - By

We’ve talked about a lot of games that were going to be a test for the fast skating Amerks earlier in the season but tonight is the first game that has some real meaning.  The Amerks and Hamilton Bulldogs are tied for first place in the North Division with each team at 41 points.  The Amerks are 4-6 in their last 10 games.  The Bulldogs are 7-2-1-0 in their last 10 games.  It’s easy to see which team has been trending in the right direction and which one the wrong direction.

The two teams have played twice this season with the Amerks winning both games.

11/10/2009 – Amerks won 4-1 in Rochester
11/24/2009 – Amerks won 5-2 at Hamilton

Things are a little different this time around.  The Amerks are without four players who were big contributors in both of those games.  Those players being Graham Mink, Mike York, Jeff Taffe, and David Brine.  Unless a miracle happens none of those guys will be playing.  The Amerks will also be without Keaton Ellerby and Jason Garrison.  In there places are Nick Tarnasky, Ernie Hartlieb, A.J. Thelan, Daniel Steiner, and Daniel Tkaczuk.  Four of those five [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks Host the Hershey Bears; 12 Days of Hockey

December 18, 2009 - By

It’s another gameday in Rochester and it’s against the Hershey Bears, the longest existing member club of the American Hockey League.  There was a time when games between the Amerks and Bears were something to look forward to.  A game that had people excited and the barn would be filled but not so much anymore.

The Bears have had off since last Saturday when they easily defeated the Amerks by the final score of 6-2.  The last game for the Amerks was on Tuesday night when they beat the Syracuse Crunch by the score of 5-3.

On paper the Bears have the better lineup but if Graham Mink and Mike York are able to play they could help even things out.  Mike York practiced with the team on Thursday morning but is questionable for the game tonight.  Graham Mink hurt a back muscle last Saturday and has not been on the ice since then.  Mink had said he hoped to return this weekend, hopefully it’s tonight.

If Nick Tarnasky can play at the same level he did on Tuesday night along with other players like Mike Duco and Brady Calla getting goals there could be some [...]Read More

Gameday: Crunch At Amerks Tuesday Dec 15th

December 15, 2009 - By

The game is not on any printed schedule as it was moved from a date in January, but make sure you don’t miss out on the seventh game of the season between the Syracuse Crunch and Rochester Americans.  These two teams do not have any love for each other.  If you know other fans make sure to remind them about the game tonight!

The Amerks have won all six games so far between the two teams this season, the last game was a 7-4 victory in Syracuse.  After that game Crunch coach Ross Yates called Salak a “cocky kid.”  Jared Aulin of the Crunch called him an “average goalie.”  Salak had the last laugh in that game winning 7-4 and celebrating at the end.

With call ups and injuries the Amerks fan base has become frustrated at the level of play we’ve seen recently.  This should be the perfect game to help get the team out of a funk.  It’s a home game and a game against a rival.  The Crunch are a team that is beatable but also a team that could really lay it on.

Nick Tarnasky is here on conditioning and Mike Duco [...]Read More

Amerks Tuesday Morning Practice in Pictures

November 24, 2009 - By

Jason Cipolla Gameday 11-24-2009The Amerks had a light game day skate this morning at Blue Cross Arena prior to the road game tonight in Hamilton.  The only items worthy of noting from practice was that it was all of the “non vets” and minus tonights starting goalie Alexander Salak.

Healthy scratches for tonight will be Brady Calla, Peter Aston, and James DeLory.

Steve MacIntyre is a beast in front of the net.  It was amusing watching him stand there as Clay Wilson and Keaton Ellerby tried to defend against him.  Mac pushes those guys around like they’re rag dolls.

Game is at 7:05pm and you can watch it live on AHLLive.com for $6.99, listen at WHTK 1280 AM/107.3 FM, whtk.com or watch it elsewhere online if you know where to look.

Gameday: Amerks at Binghamton Senators

October 30, 2009 - By

The Amerks are back in action tonight on the road against the Binghamton Senators.  These same two teams played nine days ago when the Amerks defeated the Senators by the final score of 4-2.

That game was also filled with a lot of action near goaltender Tyler Plante.  That’s also the same game that he hurt his knee when Cody Bass crashed the net and knocked him over.

One thing that should be guaranteed about the game tonight – those same antics will not happen again.  Alexander Salak is riding a three game winning streak, is undefeated this season, and will take matters into his own hands if needed.

The Amerks will be without Jeff Taffe, Kenndal McArdle, and Michal Repik who had been called up this week to join the Florida Panthers.  Even though we’re concerned about Taffe, McArdle, and Repik missing from the roster we can’t forget about Chris Taylor, Graham Mink, Mike York, and Jamie Johnson.  That’s more offensive talent than the Amerks had most of last season.

Shawn Matthias, David Brine, Evgeny Dadonov, and Victor Oreskovich will all be counted on to give everything they have and produce the results they’re [...]Read More
