New Goalie Helmet for Amerks David Leggio

New Goalie Helmet for Amerks David Leggio

I’ll always find goalie helmets in hockey fascinating because of the stories some of them have behind them.  David Leggio is debuting his new helmet this week which again has a split theme between the Rochester Americans and Buffalo Sabres.  The new paint job is because he has a new helmet from Bauer that they believe will be safer and fit his head better.  He’s been using the new style helmet in practice for a while now getting used to it while still using the previous style in games.  He’s finally comfortable with the style so he sent one off to DaveArt to get painted.  This helmet isn’t as colorful as the last one but it again has some great things involved.

The left side of the helmet has the word Americans across the top along with a portrait of Terrence K. Crow who was killed in action over in Iraq in 2005.  Terrence K. Crow was the father of one of Leggio’s friends.  He was also on the first helmet Leggio wore.  There’s also a charging buffalo coming from the cage.

Goalie Tyler Plante Talks Veteran Presence

The key to success for teams in the American Hockey League is to have a veteran presence on a roster of players in their young 20′s who have more or less moved away from home for the first time.

Players need a peer that they can talk to in the locker room, someone they can relate to.  It’s easier to talk to and listen to a peer than to a coach who knows the game but may not know what you’re going through.

The lack of a veteran presence is something that has been missing from the Amerks roster in recent years and it has showed in the league standings.

I asked goaltender Tyler Plante what’s different this year and he said, “You can already feel a vet presence in the room, its a welcome change.   It’s a little more serious of an attitude already and you can feel it.”
