American Hockey League Teams on Twitter

July 9, 2009 - By

As the 2009/2010 season approaches it appears as if the American Hockey League is finally represented within the Twitter universe.

Twitter is a great service for sports fans due to the fact that news can usually be summed up in less than 140 characters leaving out all of the extra fluff that accompanies articles.

If you’re new to Twitter I’m going to list some ways to effectively use the site and follow teams, if you’re just looking for the list of teams scroll down.

By following LetsGoAmerks (and other teams) on Twitter you’ll be able to get live updates about the Rochester Americans with scores, injuries, transactions (call ups and players being signed), game day lineups, media appearances, and much more.  If you scan through the updates I’ve posted I think you’ll notice it’s a all great info.  Also taking a moment to brag, LetsGoAmerks offers the best coverage of any AHL team on Twitter.

Amerks Announce 09/10 Opponents

July 7, 2009 - By

The Rochester Americans along with other teams in the American Hockey League today announced the schedule format and division alignments for the 2009/2010 season.  The biggest change is that the Syracuse Crunch are headed for the East Division in the Eastern Conference and the Amerks stay in the North Division of the Western Conference.  Another big change in the Amerks schedule is that they will not be playing any teams from the Western Division.

The Amerks only play 13 of the 29 teams in the league this season.  They will play against Abbotsford Heat, Grand Rapids Griffins, Hamilton Bulldogs, Lake Erie Monsters, Manitoba Moose, Toronto Marlies, Portland Pirates, Adirondack Phantoms, Albany River Rats, Binghamton Senators, Hershey Bears, Syracuse Crunch, and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

The first home game for the Amerks will be Saturday October 3rd at Blue Cross Arena, the season will start the night before on October 2nd on the road (opponent not yet named).

The Amerks will play the Portland Pirates a total of four games, two of those games will be at HSBC Arena in Buffalo.  The Pirates roster is pretty much changed over from when the Amerks and Sabres were affiliated so the game won’t be [...]Read More

AHL Division Finals Preview

April 29, 2009 - By

The Amerks season ended about two and a half weeks ago but the season continues for eight other teams in the American Hockey League.  The Division Finals started on Tuesday night with the Providence Bruins defeating the Worcester Sharks by the final score of 3-2 in OT.

The question to be asked though is, outside of the eight cities competing for the Calder Cup, does anyone else really care or know the games are going on?

The first round of the Stanley Cup finals have been very exciting to watch, the second round is even more highly anticipated.

How was the first round in the American Hockey League?  No idea. Highlights are available for free on the AHL Live site.  A lot of players currently in the NHL playoffs have played in the AHL at some point (even this season), why can’t the league get highlights mixed in with NHL highlights anywhere of future stars?

Here’s a preview of the Division Finals from the league:

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The original field of 16 has been reduced to eight as the Division Finals round of the 2009 Calder Cup Playoffs got underway on Tuesday night.

The division semifinals wrapped up [...]Read More

Second Period Snoozefest Leads to Amerks Loss

April 6, 2009 - By

The Amerks were shutout 3-0 against the Grand Rapids Griffins on Sunday evening at the Blue Cross Arena.  The first period was decent with great plays on each side of the ice, unfortunately the game became a snooze fest if you were an Amerks fan.

This was a different team than we saw the two previous nights.  They won the game on Friday night with great passing and scoring.  On Saturday night they fought Syracuse right until the end of the game.  Tonight was only 20 minutes of hockey, similar to what we saw last season.

No one was happy with the way the game went tonight.  You know it’s a bad night when fans in the balcony start chanting “boring.”

I think the only person who really played hard all night for the Amerks was goaltender David Shantz.

Darren McCarty scored the first goal of the game at 10:15 of the second period and as it turned out the only goal that really mattered.  Tom Galvin had taken a shot from the point that Shantz was able to make the initial pad save.  The puck didn’t go very far on the rebound there and Justin Abdelkader was able to [...]Read More

Amerks Come Close but Lost in Shootout

February 19, 2009 - By

There are two things that are for certain about the Rochester Americans this season, those things are that they are capable of competing against the best teams in the league and they’re also capable of playing like a last place team.  Trying to figure out ahead of time which team that will be is the tough part.

So far in the month of February it has been the team that shows it is capable of competing with the best in the league.  The Rochester Americans proved it once again on Wednesday night when they lost in a shootout to the Grand Rapids Griffins by the final score of 2-1.

Following tonight’s loss, the Griffins are 30 points ahead of the Amerks in the standings.  Yes, that is correct, 30 points.  If we looked back over the season so far we could easily find 15 games that were close that would make it seem as if the two teams were actually close.

As quick as we are to throw in the towel once in a while, it also needs to be noted the potential that exists.

“We have to be happy with the way we played tonight, they’re one of the [...]Read More

Amerks at Home vs Grand Rapids Griffins Tonight

February 18, 2009 - By

The Amerks are finally back home from the long and grueling road trip to the midwest.  On his way to the ice Tyler Plante commented, “I am still so tired from that trip.”  I would expect that they all are.

They played five games in six nights.  All five games were in different cities.  There was travel time and lack of sleep and three big wins (that could have been four).  The team traveled 2,451 on their road trip.  That is a lot of travel on little rest.

Kenndal McArdle is back on the ice today.  He was out practicing with Luke Beaverson before the team got on the ice.  They are both still out now that the whole team has joined them.  Kenndal is in a green jersey though, so I’m sure he is not full contact.  Luke is back to full contact so, I wouldn’t expect to see him around here much longer with eight defenseman healthy.

Defenseman, Mike Caruso was the only healthy scratch in Sunday’s win over the Peoria Rivermen.  He wasn’t playing his best in the two games prior to that so Franklin MacDonald took his place in the lineup.  Who will sit tonight?  My [...]Read More

Amerks Split Weekend In Grand Rapids

February 1, 2009 - By

The Amerks played two games this weekend against the hot and high scoring Grand Rapids Griffins.  The team won in a shootout on Friday night, and lost tonight 8-4.

Tonight’s issues weren’t scoring goals, but stopping them.  After the first period, the score was 1-1.  But, when the second period started, Mike Brodeur did not get back into the crease.  Once Chris Beckford-Tseu went into the net, he let in 7 goals in 31 shots.

Mike Brodeur suffered a groin injury and left the game after the first period.

It was thought we would have no scoring this weekend with most of our “big” scorers either hurt or M.I.A.  With Janis Sprukts playing for his country (as he should be), and injuries to Meyer (knee), McArdle (shoulder), and MicFlikier (foot), most of our scoring was down the drain.

But, when some are down, others rise to the occassion.  Tonight, the usually laughable Drew Larman picked up a goal to tie the game 2-2.  That was the Amerks’ second of three comebacks during the game.

New left wing, Ross Carlson had the third goal for the Amerks, once again tying tonight’s game 3-3.  Ross was also the only player to score in [...]Read More

Rochester Americans Travel to Grand Rapids; Sprukts Loaned to Latvia

January 30, 2009 - By

The All-Star break has come to a close which means the season is starting to wind down for the Rochester Americans, which is probably considered a good thing.  The team is on the road this weekend for back to back games against the Grand Rapids Griffins.

A week ago against Thursday when they lost to the Syracuse Crunch head coach Benoit Groulx used the term “bus lag” to describe the loss and the Rochester Americans lack of what seemed to be effort.

Up until this mornings game day skate, the Rochester Americans have been off the ice since last Saturday when they were shutout against the Albany River Rats in Albany.  The coaching staff had told the players to have some fun and get their minds off of hockey for a few days, we’ll see tonight how it worked out.

The two games this weekend are games three and four of six that will be played this season.  The Griffins have won both previous games, the most recent was a 6-0 win over the Amerks on December 21st at Blue Cross Arena.  The Rochester Americans are 16-18-2 all-time against the Detroit Red Wings’ affiliate.

The team will be traveling without [...]Read More

Can't Score Goals, Shutout By Griffins; Meyer Scratched

December 22, 2008 - By

“Story of our season, can’t buy a goal,” were words used by coach Benoit Groulx after the Amerks were shutout 6-0 by the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The Amerks also aren’t able to compete with the top teams in the AHL, as evident by the standings as well  the games last night against the Griffins and last week against the Peoria Rivermen.  Those two teams will be competing for winner of the conference by the end of the season.

The Griffins are 17-7-3-3, the Amerks are 8-21-0-2.  The Griffins have a scored 104 goals in 30 games.  The Amerks have scored 59 goals in 31 games.  The stats could continue, but that says it all right there.

It seemed as if the Griffins did their homework on the Amerks, the first three goals were scored by simply heading to the front of the net and beating our defense to easily put the puck past Mike Brodeur.  Evan McGrath scored the Griffins fourth goal as he crossed the blue line right past Michal Repik, took the pass from Francis Pare and shot it right past Brodeur.  Repik should have been able to outskate that guy and prevent him from getting the [...]Read More
