New Teams for Johnson, Bonneau and MacIntyre

New Teams for Johnson, Bonneau and MacIntyre

Three players that made an impression in a Rochester Americans uniform last season have now moved on and found jobs with other teams.

Jimmy Bonneau signed a one year deal with the Hamilton Bulldogs.  Bonneau made headlines in the world of hockey fights last season when he fought Jon Mirasty four times in two games in October 2009.  Tough player who stands up for his team and not afraid to back down from anyone.

Jamie Johnson signed with the Detroit Red Wings along with Chris Minard and goalie Joey MacDonald.  All three were signed for North Division rival Grand Rapids Griffins and immediately made that team better.

Steve MacIntyre returned to the Edmonton Oilers with a one year deal, the same team that claimed him off of waivers in 2008 and then waived him in 2009.  He’ll have a great chance at cracking the Oilers lineup.

Highlight of the season was seeing MacIntyre knockout Jeremy Yablonski:

Best of luck elsewhere guys and don’t beat up on the Amerks too much when you’re an opponent!

Calder Cup Finals are Set, Hershey vs Texas

May 26, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

At the start of the season it was easy to predict that the Hershey Bears would be in the Calder Cup finals, predicting the Texas Stars would be there opponent would not have been a prediction.  The Stars defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs in game 7 to advance to the finals.  All eyes are on the Stanley Cup finals at this point, but this should be a decent series for the Calder Cup.

Here’s the NHL.com recap of the Stars win:

The first-year Texas Stars rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Hamilton Bulldogs 4-2 on Wednesday night to win Game 7 of the AHL Western Conference Finals and a berth in the Calder Cup Finals.

The Austin-based Stars won Games 6 and 7 in Hamilton to earn the opportunity to face the defending AHL champion Hershey Bears, the top farm team of the Washington Capitals, beginning on June 3 at Hershey.

The Stars become the first team since the Chicago Wolves and Bridgeport Sound Tigers in 2002 to reach the Calder Cup Finals in their first AHL season. In doing so, Texas won a pair of Game 7s on the road – just the fifth time in AHL [...]Read More

Not Executing Leads to Another Loss; More Postgame Quotes

February 6, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

The Rochester Americans have to be happy that today is Saturday so that they can rebound from another poor performance on a Friday night.  The team is traveling today to play against the Binghamton Senators and if the past month tells us anything it’s that they’ll win the game.

Benoit Groulx probably anticipated the question and stated, “Why are we so bad on Friday?  I don’t know why.”

(also read an earlier post game article where Benoit Groulx talks about the team not having the whole roster, “Amerks Lose Another Friday Game, Blame Missing Players.”)

“All we have to do is win the first period and then the game is probably ours but we just weren’t executing,” Chris Taylor said after the game.

Chris Taylor also commented, “They were the much better team, not because they’re better but because they played better.  They just out worked us.  We always have to be prepared and we just weren’t ready to go.”

A team that at one time talked about needing more practice time is suddenly plagued by practice time.

“If they have better skill and that then I can understand but they don’t,” Taylor said.  “They [...]Read More

Amerks Lose Another Friday Game, Blame the Missing Players

2
February 5, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

The Rochester Americans lost on another episode of Frustrating Fridays, this time by the final score of 5-2 against the Hamilton Bulldogs.  A lot can be said about this game, very little would be good.

Cedrick Desjardins was great.  The Hamilton defense was great.  The Amerks defense failed again.  The Amerks special teams failed again.  Tyler Plante allowed four goals but I don’t think he was “bad.”

“Even though they’re missing players they’re still a good team,” Benoit Groulx said about the Hamilton Bulldogs.

A moment later Groulx went on to say, “We have not played with our full roster for two months.”

Are you kidding me?  I was speechless when he said this.  But there’s more.

He went on to say, “I think the day we’ll have Repik back, Garrison healthy, everybody healthy, Matthias back we’ll have a much better roster.  At the beginning of the year we had everybody and the team was playing well but we havn’t had that chance and I think its going to take a certain period of time.”

It sounds like the month of January was a complete waste.  Nothing was accomplished after the month of December as the [...]Read More

Bulldogs Win; Bonneau and Duco Fight Videos

January 23, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

The Hamilton Bulldogs easily defeated the Amerks by the final score of 6-1 on Friday night and I think the game can be summed up by saying that they had a great defense and Rochester did not.  The Bulldogs defense kept the amount of real scoring chances for the Amerks to a minimum and when there was a good chance Cedrick Desjardins was there to make the stop.

(fight videos below)

A respectable crowd of 5,671 showed up but was unfortunately delivered a stinker of a game.  At least they got to see two fights and drink some $1 beers and eat $1 hot dogs.

The first five minutes of the game made it seem as if it could be a competitive battle between the two teams.  That changed quickly though after Hamilton scored two quick goals off some mistakes by the Amerks.

Alexander Salak was pulled after the first period and Tyler Plante went into the game to play the final 40 minutes.  Yes the goalies allowed a total of six goals but I don’t think they can be blamed for the loss.  If anything the two goaltenders who had been out injured suffered the [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks Going for Fourth Straight vs Bulldogs

January 22, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

The AHL All-Star break is over and it’s time to head into the final months of the 2009-2010 hockey season and the race in the North Division is going to be a close one.  The Hamilton Bulldogs started to pull away a little bit but with a three game winning streak the Amerks are back within seven points.  A three game home stand for the Amerks should be just what they need to get themselves back in the race.

There was a combined 10 regulation goals scored in the previous meeting between these two teams last week so it’ll be interesting to see if both teams really have figured each other out.  Alexander Salak and Cedrick Desjardins were both at the AHL All-Star Game this week and will be riding the momentum of that experience.  I could be wrong though and Sanford could get the start.

I would say that Graham Mink is probably for the game.  He has skated in practice for two weeks now and played fine at the All-Star game (even though there was no contact).  If he’s back in the lineup and 100% on a line with Dadonov and Taylor along with [...]Read More

Amerks Fall From First in Loss to Dogs'

December 30, 2009 - By Keith Wozniak

If I were to write a full recap of the game it would contain one word, snoozefest.  The team just could not get things going offensively.  The team has another game on Thursday evening at 5pm on the road against the Lake Erie Monsters.  The Monsters have been playing well lately, we’ll see what happens.

Here’s the Amerks press release about the game:

(Hamilton, December 30)… The Hamilton Bulldogs recaptured first place in the North Division with a 4-1 win over the Rochester Americans tonight at Copps Coliseum. The win moved Hamilton (21-8-2-3, 47 points) one point ahead of the Amerks (22-11-2-0, 46 points) for the top spot in the division.

The loss ended Rochester’s streak of earning a point in nine straight games against Hamilton and extended the Amerks’ road losing streak to four games. It also interrupted the Amerks’ two-game winning streak. Despite the setback, Rochester still leads the season series with a 3-1-1-0 record.

J.T. Wyman and Mikael Johansson led Hamilton with two points each tonight (1+1). Bulldogs’ goalie Cedrick Desjardins earned the win in goal with 24 saves and held Rochester to one goal. The Amerks got a goal from Chris Taylor and a 20-save effort [...]Read More

Amerks Take Back First With Win Over Bulldogs

December 27, 2009 - By Keith Wozniak

The Amerks defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs on Saturday night in front of 7,083 fans to take back first place in the North Divsion.  A pair of goals from Jeff Taffe, a fancy goal by Evgeny Dadonov and an unlikely empty netter by Keaton Ellerby gave the Amerks a 4-2 win.

The win ends the four game skid for the Amerks and likely gives the team a little more confidence in themselves and the pieced together lineup.  Graham Mink had been out hurt for the past two weeks but decided enough was enough and suited up to play.

Ryan Mior got the job done with 45 saves.  The defense is another story, but that’s nothing new.

It was a great post holiday crowd and even better that the team found a way to win.  I had to leave right after the game to visit family in Buffalo which explains the lack of a better writeup.

Here’s links to Kevin O’s coverage in the D&C:

Was it a pretty victory? Depends how you look at it

Salak Hurt; Bulldogs Move to First Place with OT Win

December 21, 2009 - By Keith Wozniak

The Amerks took the Hamilton Bulldogs to overtime but in the end the Bulldogs were the ones that scored and won the game to take two points away.  The game had it’s ups and downs and twists and turns.  I think the game took us on an emotional roller coaster ride.

Heading into the game the Amerks and Bulldogs were tied with 41 points each, with the win the Bulldogs take over position of first place.  Based on the celebration on the ice and the cheering and excitement in the Bulldogs locker room it’s obvious they enjoyed the win.

The biggest news of the game was that Alexander Salak went down injured at 9:28 of the first period after Benoit Pouliot scored the first goal of the game.  He left the game with a shoulder injury and did not return.  The extent of his injury will be known more on Monday after he visits the doctor, but considering the fact he left the game in pain I expect he’ll miss some games.

Jamie Johnson talked about the injuries saying, “It just seems to keep coming if it’s up top or down here, someone within the organization [...]Read More
