Gameday: Amerks vs Bulldogs, First Real Test

November 10, 2009 - By

The game tonight is shaping up to be the Amerks biggest challenge so far this season.  The Hamilton Bulldogs and Rochester Americans are similar in a number of ways.  The biggest difference between the two teams is three games.  The three games is three wins for the Amerks and three shootout losses for the Bulldogs.

The Amerks are on a lengthy winning streak.  They have a great goalie.  Great chemistry on the team.  Great leadership on and off the ice.  All of the ingredients exist with this team and it shows in the standings.

Rochester is number one in the standings and also has the best streak going in the league.

The starting goaltenders will be Alexander Salak and Curtis Sanford, two of the hottest goalies in the league right now.  Sanford is a veteran having played in 209 AHL games and 108 NHL games.  Salak is the hot rookie from the Czech Rep. that has played in a total of 8 AHL games.

The Amerks have played well without Jeff Taffe and Michal Repik so having them back in the lineup will be a big help.  Everyone has been contributing but the more seasoned players [...]Read More

Amerks Jersey Ranked 2nd by The Hockey News

August 13, 2009 - By

The Hockey News ranked jerseys last year based on the teams logo, this year they decided to go by patches, striping, and piping to rank the jerseys.  I also need to mention colors as well.

The Amerks were ranked second for a “Classic crest with a clean look to it.”  I’m not quite sure how the Milwaukee Admirals got the top spot.  In a typically boring month for hockey news this is what we get.

Take the time to visit The Hockey News web site to vote for the Rochester Americans jersey as the best in the AHL – http://thehockeynews.com/pages/puck_poll.php

Two teams missing are the Texas Stars and Abbotsford Heat because the teams have not officially launched their jerseys.  To view what was actually said about each jersey click here – http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/27493-.html.

Here’s the straight rankings:

1. Milwaukee Admirals
2. Rochester Americans
3. San Antonio Rampage
4. Springfield Falcons
5. Manchester Monarchs
6. Worcester Sharks
7. Norfolk Admirals
8. Bridgeport Sound Tigers
9. Peoria Rivermen
10. Chicago Wolves
11. Manitoba Moose
12. Houston Aeros
13. Hershey Bears
14. Toronto Marlies
15. Grand Rapids Griffins[...]Read More

American Hockey League Teams on Twitter

July 9, 2009 - By

As the 2009/2010 season approaches it appears as if the American Hockey League is finally represented within the Twitter universe.

Twitter is a great service for sports fans due to the fact that news can usually be summed up in less than 140 characters leaving out all of the extra fluff that accompanies articles.

If you’re new to Twitter I’m going to list some ways to effectively use the site and follow teams, if you’re just looking for the list of teams scroll down.

By following LetsGoAmerks (and other teams) on Twitter you’ll be able to get live updates about the Rochester Americans with scores, injuries, transactions (call ups and players being signed), game day lineups, media appearances, and much more.  If you scan through the updates I’ve posted I think you’ll notice it’s a all great info.  Also taking a moment to brag, LetsGoAmerks offers the best coverage of any AHL team on Twitter.

Amerks Announce 09/10 Opponents

July 7, 2009 - By

The Rochester Americans along with other teams in the American Hockey League today announced the schedule format and division alignments for the 2009/2010 season.  The biggest change is that the Syracuse Crunch are headed for the East Division in the Eastern Conference and the Amerks stay in the North Division of the Western Conference.  Another big change in the Amerks schedule is that they will not be playing any teams from the Western Division.

The Amerks only play 13 of the 29 teams in the league this season.  They will play against Abbotsford Heat, Grand Rapids Griffins, Hamilton Bulldogs, Lake Erie Monsters, Manitoba Moose, Toronto Marlies, Portland Pirates, Adirondack Phantoms, Albany River Rats, Binghamton Senators, Hershey Bears, Syracuse Crunch, and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

The first home game for the Amerks will be Saturday October 3rd at Blue Cross Arena, the season will start the night before on October 2nd on the road (opponent not yet named).

The Amerks will play the Portland Pirates a total of four games, two of those games will be at HSBC Arena in Buffalo.  The Pirates roster is pretty much changed over from when the Amerks and Sabres were affiliated so the game won’t be [...]Read More

Amerks vs Bulldogs Tonight; Sweetland Back to Everblades

March 15, 2009 - By

The Amerks are on a five game losing skid and hoping to end it tonight with a win against the Hamilton Bulldogs at Blue Cross Arena.  What the outcome will be around 8:30pm tonight is anyones guess.  This is the final game this season between the two teams, the Amerks won the last game on February 27th by the final score of 4-1.  The season series is 3-3-0-1 for the Amerks, so tonight should be an even game as the two teams have been competitive all season, unlike the Amerks and Marlies.

Reading about last nights 4-1 loss in Syracuse it appears as if Crunch goaltender Kevin Lalande was the deciding factor in the game, especially with the Amerks unloading 49 shots on goal.  Lindsay Kramer of the Syracuse Post Standard has good writeups about the game here and here.

I’m expecting Tyler Plante to get the start in net tonight.  Brodeur has been on the losing side for four out of the five straight losses and started in the last two games for the Amerks.  They havn’t been entirely his fault, but something has to change.

Still out with injuries: Shawn Matthias (wrist), Jacob Mcflickier (ankle), Franklin [...]Read More

Amerks Face Division Rivals This Weekend

March 13, 2009 - By

The Rochester Americans are back in action this weekend with home games on Friday against the Toronto Marlies and Sunday against the Hamilton Bulldogs.  On Saturday they travel to Syracuse to take on the Crunch.  Following this weekend the Amerks will only have 12 games remaining.

One bright spot looking towards this weekend is the expected return of Drew Larman and Kenndal McArdle.  It’s been six weeks since we last saw McArdle in the lineup when he went out with a shoulder injury.  Larman has been out a month with a rib injury.

Michal Repik played with the Florida Panthers on Thursday night in Buffalo scoring the only goal of the game for the Panthers.  Not bad considering he only had 3:50 of ice time.  The Panthers next game is on Saturday home against Tampa, it’ll be interesting to see if he’s sent back or if the Cats keep him around.

Tanner Glass is recovering from shoulder surgery but does expect to return to action before the season is over.  Shawn Matthias has been out with a wrist injury and is not expected to play.  He was slashed on the stick last weekend which apparently sent some sort of vibration [...]Read More

Coming From Behind, Amerks Last Week of February in Review

March 1, 2009 - By

We have a lot to catch up on with the Rochester Americans over the past week so we’re going to get everyone up to speed in one post, in case you have not been paying attention.  We spent our week improving the offices of Lets Go Amerks and a night out at the Cystic Fibrosis dinner.

Here we go…

* Starting with last Sunday, the Toronto Marlies defeated the Amerks by the final score of 6-2.  The Marlies were beat 3-1 the day before by the Amerks in Toronto, so the Marlies came out angry and never let up.  Game Summary

* Luke Beaverson and Andrew Sweetland were assigned to the Florida Everblades on Wednesday afternoon.  Sweetland had played in 40 games for the Amerks and only tallied two assists and 10 penalty minutes.  Beaverson had played in 14 games for the Amerks and got on the scoresheet with one assist and 21 penalty minutes.

* The Cystic Fibrosis Annual Celebrity Waiter Dinner & Auction was on Wednesday night at Blue Cross Arena.  The Amerks and Knighthawks teamed up for this years fundraiser.  Over the past 18 years, the Amerks have raised over $650,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis [...]Read More

Christmas Is Over…Amerks Ready To Take On The Bulldogs 12-26-2008

December 26, 2008 - By

Janis Sprukts

Tonight, the Rochester Americans take on the Hamilton Bulldogs at the Blue Cross Arena.  The game starts at 7:35PM and should have a pretty good size crowd as the post Christmas game usually does.  Mike Broduer should be starting in goal tonight even after he slipped up during Sunday night’s game.

Stefan Meyer should be will likely be back on the ice (as he should have been in Sunday night).  Drew Larman and Randel Gelech should be scratched if you are scratching players based on who is producing the worst on the team.

Rory Fitzpatrick still isn’t practicing, but he is here working out.  He is currently out here on the bench with the team watching them work.  Remember that Rory should be returning on the team’s trip out to Manitoba.

Don’t miss tonight’s game.  It may be the loudest one of the year with a crowd expected of close to 8,000.
