The Amerks 12 Days of Christmas 2008 to 2011

The Amerks 12 Days of Christmas 2008 to 2011

The Amerks have continued the tradition in 2011 of having the players sing their own version of the 12 Days of Christmas.  Starting with 2008 and then this seasons is down at the bottom.  Derek Whitmore and Jacob Legace offer the best moments in this years.  It’s a shame they couldn’t squeeze in a “Legend of Joe Finley” somewhere.  Grab a hold of things that gain even a slight amount of popularity and run with it!  They’re all worth watching and are classics that will follow these guys through their careers.

Starting with 2008 and then 2011 at the bottom..

2008 featuring Drew Larman, Keaton Ellerby, Jordan Henry, Dan Collins, Franklin MacDonald, Tanner Glass, Michael Caruso, Riley Emmerson, Jason Garrison, David Shantz, Andrew Sweetland, Michal Repik

2009 featuring Tyler Plante, Mike Duco, Andrew Sweetland, Jimmy Bonneau, Shawn Matthias, David Brine, Brady Calla, Luke Beaverson, Evgeny Dadanov, Michal Repik, Jason Garison, Alexander Salak

2010 featuring Jacob Markstrom, Adam Comrie, AJ Jenks, Evgeny Dadanov, Brady Calla, Scott Timmins, Colby Robak, PJ Fenton, Eric Selleck, Paul Baier, Michael Caruso, Tyler Plant.  I’m missing two faces here, who are they?

Amerks Lose in Overtime to the Rampage, 10th Loss by One Goal

Amerks Lose in Overtime to the Rampage, 10th Loss by One Goal

There’s almost always more than one way to look at a game, especially a loss.  You can look at it as being a close game and getting a point on the road is acceptable or you can start to pull your hair out due to frustration at the apparent downhill slide.  The Amerks have now lost 10 games by one goal.  You could even push that number to 11 since Albany scored an empty net goal on December 4th to win 4-2 so that’s more like a one goal loss than anything else.

One thing that didn’t help the Amerks was that Colin Stuart was called up to the Buffalo Sabres on Friday morning due to Patrick Kaleta not being able to play.  They had thought Kaleta would play so everyone went on the road trip.  It’ll be interesting to see what kind of flights Stuart had to take to get from San Antonio to Buffalo.

This Rochester Americans team is having to rely on defense and goaltending and unfortunately a defensive turnover by Drew Schiestel is what led to a Bill Thomas breakaway to score the game winner in overtime.  There’s very little offense being generated and the only [...]Read More

Amerks Weekend in Texas, Week in Review

Amerks Weekend in Texas, Week in Review

The Amerks are on a long road trip to Texas and will be looking for a big weekend full of wins to put this last three in three behind them and gain some ground in the standings.  They’ll play the Rampage on Friday, Stars on Saturday and Aero’s on Sunday.  All three games are must win but the game against the Rampage (the current Florida Panthers affiliate) has some more meaning for obvious reasons. More on that below.

They started out well last weekend with a 3-0 win over the Albany Devils but went on to lose two games by only one goal, one against the Phantoms and the other the Bulldogs.  Paying attention to details is something the team talked about after the great win on Friday night but they lost focus of that the next two nights which resulted in two losses.  Evan Rankin had two goals against Adirondack which gave them a 2-1 lead before eventually losing in overtime.  A four minute high sticking penalty by Drew Schiestel gave the Phantoms the power play in overtime which was the deciding factor.  The next night against Hamilton the final score was 2-1 which meant it was a close [...]Read More

Chicago Blackhawks Signed Alexander Salak

Chicago Blackhawks Signed Alexander Salak

The Chicago Blackhawks signed former Rochester Americans goalie Alexander Salak to a two year one way contract worth approximately $1.2 million.  It’s still possible Salak will play in the American Hockey League on a one way contract but it means he’ll be paid NHL cash if he does.

Yes, this news is about a month old but someone asked me over the weekend where Salak was playing so I decided to take a minute to post.

Last season Salak played for Farjestad BK in the Swedish Elite League. He ranked second in the league with a 1.97 goals against average and a .926 save percentage.  When he played for the Amerks during the 2009-2010 season he was a fan favorite with his Dominik Hasek style of play.  Teams quickly seemed to figure him out and his stats went downhill thanks to the Florida Panthers not providing him with a full time goalie coach (at least in my opinion).

Salak had been loaned to Farjestad BK of the Swedish Elite League for the 2010-11 season by the Florida Panthers before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks on February 9, 2011.  The Panthers had also sent Michael Frolik to the Blackhawks in exchange for Jack [...]Read More

Nylander Leads Amerks to a 5-2 Win Over the Phantoms

Nylander Leads Amerks to a 5-2 Win Over the Phantoms

Ahh it’s been a while.. after a few weeks absent from the rink I was finally able to make it to an Amerks game and was treated to a nice 5-2 win over the Adirondack Phantoms.  Michael Nylander led the way with two goals and two assists in the game.

Even though I missed the home opener, this was the first game of the season for myself so it was great to see some hockey again, get a cold Genny Light from the Blue Zone and watch the kids play knee hockey behind section 127.

Michael Duco scored first at 17:07 of the first period just after a power play opportunity ended.  A lot of people in the crowd were yelling the typical “shoooooot it” but patience paid off when Duco shot in a rebound for his second goal of the season.  There weren’t that many chances for a shot but the puck possession paid off.

Interesting little scrap early in the second period when Matt Clackson (brother of Amerks forward Chris Clackson) cross checked Triston Grant to the ice in front of the Phantoms net.  Referee Terry Koharski had his arm raised to make the call on Clackson before [...]Read More

Amerks Will Be Calder Cup Contenders Again This Season

July 2, 2010 - By

The second day of free agency has started and even though there were not any players signed for the Amerks, the Panthers did hire Mike Santos to be the new assistant general manager.  Santos will be overseeing the Amerks and he already spent most his first day working with Jody Gage.  A month ago I wrote that things were not all doom and gloom saying the lines of communication will be open, the Amerks are looking forward to an improved season, and everyone will have an open mind.  That’s exactly what has happened.

The Amerks were considered Calder Cup contenders for the 09/10 season and will be again this season.  That’s assuming there isn’t a long stretch of injuries, call ups and internal disagreements with the coaching staff.

Here’s more about the open lines of communication from Steve Gorten:

Tallon said Santos will work closely with AHL Rochester’s director of player personnel Jody Gage and the rest of the Americans brass, so it looks like the Panthers’ rocky relationship with its minor-league affiliate can be smoothed over. In fact, Tallon said Santos and Gage were on the phone all day working together to sign some AHL free agents.

Free Agency Impact on the Amerks, This Year, Last Year, Current Players

July 1, 2010 - By

The 2010 edition of free agency is set to begin at Noon EST today and we may not see immediate moves by the Florida Panthers and Rochester Americans but there definitely will be.  A lot of people still consider the Panthers a “bad parent club” but they did a very good job partnered with the Amerks in building a successful AHL team last season.  A few minor upgrades (defense and coach) and the team is already better.

One move that seems to have been overlooked is that the Panthers acquired Michael Grabner in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks.  The Panthers sent Keith Ballard and Victor Oreskovich to the Canucks in exchange.  Grabner has spent the majority of the past four seasons (180 games) with the Manitoba Moose and is good for 20 goals and 20 assists.  He’s not a veteran player based on games, but he’s a fast skater and team him up with a speedy center and we’ll have a reliable scoring line.

Jamie Johnson has already said that he’s been in contact with the Panthers and would be willing to come back.  Johnson was a leader on the ice and led the team in scoring.  He [...]Read More

Sources: G Jacob Markstrom signs with Florida Panthers

May 28, 2010 - By

An expected move, but great to see that the signing of Markstrom is official.  Dale Tallon will have his work cut out for him to place.  Markstrom and members of the Panthers organization have said they planned to start him in Rochester, but that could all change if Tomas Vokoun is traded.  We’ll have to wait and see.  Either way, the Panthers are looking pretty strong in goal with this kid now in the system.

Sources close to the Swedish Elite League have informed LitterBoxCats.com that Panthers goaltending prospect Jacob Markstrom – whom many observers consider the best netminder currently outside the NHL – has signed a 3-year entry-level contract with Florida. Details of the deal have not been disclosed.

Markstrom – fresh off a bronze medal in the recently concluded IIHF World Championship in Germany – is a second round selection (31st overall) by Florida in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, and is widely viewed as the Panthers’ “future” in net.

This was an expected development, as GM Dale Tallon recently stated he and Markstrom’s agent were speaking regularly. More to follow soon.

No Quick Changes Expected for the Amerks

May 18, 2010 - By

Dale Tallon was officially introduced on Tuesday as the new GM of the Florida Panthers, but for Amerks fans don’t expect any “big news” quickly.  Tallon left Florida today to head to Germany to attend the World Championships.  As demanding as we are in Rochester for news, the Amerks are not going to be his top priority over the NHL club that has not made the playoffs in 10 years.  I could be wrong though if he’s looking from the dark depths of the system all the way up to the top.

I’ll be talking to Tallon once he returns from Germany to get his thoughts that status of things here in Rochester and his thoughts about development in the American Hockey League.

For more info on the press conference and about Tallon check out Steve Gorten’s blog, tons of great info there.  Everything from Sexton, draft picks, status of players and how this had been in the works for a few weeks now.

Randy Sexton’s recent comments make a little more sense now, he had said that the organization would take a few weeks to evaluate everything.  He knew the team was looking for a new GM and that it was going [...]Read More

Contract Status for Amerks Players Heading into Next Season

April 29, 2010 - By

Now that the season is over for the Rochester Americans it’s time to take a look and see who is still under contract with the Panthers or Amerks, who is and who is not still likely to sign.  I grouped players by signed, likely to sign and RFA and UFA.  Under each category I put some guesses about the status of the players.

Currently Under Contract for 10/11:

Coaches: Benoit Groulx and Jason Cipolla

Goalies: Alexander Salak, Marc Cheverie

Defense: Michael Caruso, Keaton Ellerby, Adam Comrie, James DeLory

Forwards: Evgeny Dadonov, Michal Repik, Brady Calla, Graham Mink, Chris Taylor, Shawn Matthias, Victor Oreskovich, Eric Selleck, AJ Jenks

One Way: Clay Wilson and Jeff Taffe are signed but to one way contracts with the Florida Panthers.  If they don’t fit into their plans it’s still possible the Panthers will try and have them clear waivers to be sent to the Amerks.

***** Shawn Matthias has probably played his last game in the AHL and should be able to earn a job with the Panthers going forward.  Keaton Ellerby will be trying to earn a job as well but he has some work ahead.  It’s amazing that James DeLory is still under [...]Read More

Panthers Sign Cheverie to Add to Stockpile of Goalies

April 9, 2010 - By

Goalie Prospects at the Panthers 2009 Development Camp

The Florida Panthers are set with at least one position, goalies.  On Thursday the Florida Panthers signed Marc Cheverie to a two year entry level contract.  Cheverie just finished his junior year with the University of Denver Pioneers where he led the nation with 24 wins, six shutouts and a .937 save percentage.  The season ended for the Pionees with a loss to RIT in the NCAA regional semifinals.

“It’s great to have this done,” said general manager Randy Sexton. “He’s a good young goaltending prospect. He made himself a player. He went to Denver as a backup and became one of the top goalies in the NCAA.” (quote from On Frozen Pond)

I’m sure the Panthers worked to get him signed so they could get two years out of him on an entry level contract to see what he’s capable of at the pro level.  He will be at the Panthers training camp in September and possibly spend some time with the Amerks.

The signing of Cheverie does raise some questions about what the Panthers are going to do with all of these goalies.  The Panthers also have [...]Read More

A few notes from Camp

June 3, 2009 - By

Just wrapping up our second day at the Florida Panthers Development Camp and taking a moment to share a few things.  The core group of the players at the camp is who will be playing for the Rochester Americans next season.

The camp is a time where players show up to learn, this is not about players trying to get a roster spot.  That opportunity comes in September.  At the camp the players are being equipped with knowledge of how they can continue to develop over the summer.

That’s not going to stop us from talking about how they look though.

A lot of so called experts don’t agree, but I think Michael Caruso is one of the top defensive prospects of the Panthers.  He said he’s going to spend the off season getting bigger.

Alexander Salak looks great on the ice.  One of the things I noticed is that he uses his stick a lot.  He’s not afraid to go after the puck.

Tyler Plante looks great as well continuing his late season revival.  If his shoulder can hold up he’ll continue to improve.

James DeLory has moved up to forward and plans to do everything he can to [...]Read More
