Sprukts Hat Trick Sparks Amerks 5-3 Win Over Manchester

January 17, 2009 - By

The Amerks followed up a loss against the Binghamton Senators with a come back 5-3 win over the Manchester Monarchs on Friday night on the road in Manchester.

At the end of the first period the Monarchs had a 2-1 lead along with a 18-4 shot advantage, both goals coming on the power play.  Sprukts had the Amerks only goal in the first period, assisted by Jason Garrison and Drew Larman.

The Monarchs struck early in the second period with a goal scored by Brad Richardson only 57 seconds into the period.  Later in the period Janis Sprukts scored his second of the game assisted by Jason Garrison and Michal Repik to close the gap to one goal.

The third period belonged to the Amerks with three goals scored.  Sprukts got the hat trick with a power play goal assisted by Garrison and David Brine.  Only 46 seconds later Shawn Matthias scored the game winning goal assisted by Mike Duco and Keaton Ellerby.

Kenndal McArdle finished the scoring with an empty net goal with assists going to Sprukts and Garrison.

Mike Brodeur finished the game saving 33 of 36 shots faced, majority of those came in the first period [...]Read More

Tuesday Morning Practice; Injury Updates, Still No Contract

December 30, 2008 - By

It was a cold morning at the ESL Sports Centre in Henrietta for practice this morning.. amazing how much I’ve taken it for granted sitting in warm comfortable seats at Blue Cross Arena instead of metal benches.

Practice was practice, what else can really be said about the team going through the motions and drills.  Worth noting though was Kenndal McArdle and David Brine hanging out late practicing shooting the puck at various spots of the net.  The Amerks are at the bottom of the AHL with only 66 goals scored this season, which is also a reason they’re in last place.  If you can’t score, you can’t win.

Shawn Matthias and Jason Garrison were the last two players to leave the ice as they worked with Jason Cipolla.  It’s an understatement to say that Matthias needs the practice.  In 24 games he only has 3 goals and 1 assist.  He also has a team worst  +/- rating of -21.

Mike Brodeur, the one player who has put new life in the team, still has no update on any sort of contract offer.  He’s on a 25 game PTO and has played in 10 games so far.  I asked [...]Read More

2009 AHL All-Star Classic Voting; Which Amerk Should Represent the team?

December 7, 2008 - By

The American Hockey League has announced that 2009 AHL All-Star Classic Fan Balloting presented by Reebok will began today (Monday, December at noon EST, exclusively on the official Web site of the AHL, theahl.com/balloting

Fans will have the opportunity to vote for the most deserving AHL players by visiting theahl.com and completing the official Reebok AHL All-Star Fan Ballot. The players receiving the most votes by position will earn berths in the starting lineups of both the Canadian AHL All-Star team and the PlanetUSA AHL All-Star team at the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Charter Communications, to be held Jan. 25-26 in Worcester, Mass.

A committee of AHL coaches will select the remaining All-Stars, and all 29 clubs will be represented on the final rosters.

Which raises the question, who from the Rochester Americans should be represented at this years All-Star Classic?

The top two choices at this point would be Michal Repik, Janis Sprukts, or Jason Garrison.  Repik would probably be the top choice since he currently leads the team with 14 points (6 goals, 8 assists).  Janis Sprukts isn’t too far behind with 10 points (4 goals, 6 assists).

Depending on the rest [...]Read More

Skate With The Players 11-04-2008

November 5, 2008 - By

My husband and I took our son to the annual Season Ticket Holder’s Skate with the Players tonight at Blue Cross Arena.  Last year I had a lot of fun at this event, but my son was just a little too young and a lot too shy to go with us.  I personally think this is one of the best events the Amerks’ put on throughout the year.

From 6:00-7:00 p.m. the veteran players were on the ice.  This included Rory Fitzpatrick, Janis Sprukts, Drew Larman, Stefan Meyer, Peter Aston, Tanner Glass, Dan Collins, Kenndal McArdle, Jordan Henry, Doug O’Brien, Chris Beckford-Tseu, Franklin MacDonald, David Brine and Tyler Plante.

Karl Stewart was out with the first group.  He wasn’t skating because of his knee injury.  But, he stayed on the bench the whole time and was pleased to talk with whomever sat down next to him.  This was the first tiem I had gotten the chance to talk to Karl and he is a very nice and passionate guy.  He said his knee injury is an old one that flares up sometimes and he just needs to rest it and it is fine again.

Not even two minutes after we [...]Read More

Panthers Sign Jassen Cullimore

October 28, 2008 - By

The Florida Panthers have signed defensemen Jassen Cullimore to a one year deal.  He’ll be taking the spot of Cory Murphy who is going to be out for a while with a shoulder injury.  Considering the way our Amerks defense has played so far this season, we can’t afford to lose our top defensemen Jason Garrison as a call up.

Amerks' Practice 10-28-2008

October 28, 2008 - By

I was hoping to see a really tough practice today after Saturday and Sunday’s games (and even Friday’s, it wasn’t a beautiful win).  And that is exactly what I am seeing.  Coach Benoit is not messing around today…not that he ever messes around.

During the first drill we are here for there are people still not hitting in the corners.  Benoit did not like that.  He called the whole team over to talk about how poorly he felt about that.  It sounded a little something like this. “We are so f***ing soft, so f***ing soft.  I don’t want to see you skating up and just putting your stick in there!  You hit your man and take the puck and get it out of there.”

They are now beating the bejesus out of each other in the corners.  And that is what I like to see.  Hit, hit, hit.  More hitting.  I want this team to start killing the other teams…literally.  I am sick of watching the other teams dig in the corner like professionals and we go in like pansies.  We will never win a corner battle that way.

There is an awful lot of bad words coming [...]Read More

Jason Garrison Rejoining Amerks in Hershey

October 26, 2008 - By

Jason Garrison flew to St Louis where he played with the Florida Panthers on Saturday night, and is flying back on Sunday to rejoin the Amerks in Hershey when they play the Bears. If the Panthers injury problems continue he could be well on his way to accumulating the most frequent flyer miles this season.

Four Recent Signings

April 2, 2008 - By

Here’s a few more recent transactions over the past few days, we’re a few days behind schedule around these parts.

Jason Garrison:
Signed a two-year deal with the Florida Panthers.

Don’t think Garrison should spend too much money on sunblock, though, what with the winters in Rochester being what they are and all.

In all seriousness, Garrison sounds like a solid signing, a character guy who — to coin a JM phrase — be a good pro. And, it seems like he has some grit, coming back from a broken leg to play in the postseason for UMD (which is not short for University of North Dakota).  Source / Hockey DB Stats

Andrew Sweetland:
SUNRISE, Fla.  Florida Panthers General Manager and Head Coach Jacques Martin announced today that the club has agreed to terms with free agent college prospect F Andrew Sweetland on an entry level contract.

Andrew is a player that we identified a few years ago and have followed his progress closely, and he participated in our development camp last year, said Martin. He is a player that posses good size, speed, skill and hockey sense. He will have an [...]Read More
